Bryston BDP-1 and Mac/Airport Extreme

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I have what is probably a dumb question. But perhaps someone here can shed some light on my problem.

I'm a new owner of a Bryston BDP-1. It sounds great. My problem, though, is hooking it up to my home network. I have the latest IMac and an Airport Extreme wireless router.

The Bryston works fine in a stand-alone mode via navigation buttons on the front of the unit. Or, you can hard-wire it to your home network and control it via a special music player application on the computer or through a portable device such as an IPad or IPod Touch. So, I bought some ethernet cable and connected the unit to one of the ethernet outputs of my Airport Extreme using the device name and password provided by Bryston. But here's the problem: sometimes, the unit will show up in my finder as a "shared device" and sometimes it won't. When I turn everything off, the Bryston will disappear, even though it's still hooked up. After 20 minutes or so of changing ports on the Airport Extreme, restarting the computer multiple times, etc., it may finally show up again as a shared device. Kind of annoying, to say the least.

I think I can assign a static IP address to the Bryston, but I'm not sure if that would help or how to do it. Anyway, I'm at my wits end.

thanks in advance, for any ideas.

Problem solved, I think.

I was just being impatient. Apparently, the Mac software has a component called Bonjour that simply takes a while to recognize the BDP-1. This morning the wait time was 10 minutes. After that, everything worked fine.
