Wolfson 8741 mystery dac

Recommended Posts

Watching the 2015 video again on larger screen ... it looks like a custom (DIY) job; note the handwritten labels on the PCB, etc . It may be some sort of promo video, promoted by Wolfson themselves to highlight their successor to the WM8740. The narrator is highly praiseworthy of the 8741 over the orig. 8740. And comments are disabled!! Yes, the datasheet for the 8741 (and 8742 for that matter) do note some claimed dB improvements, but the 71 and 72 add DSD and other features like volume control and more select-able filters. All these added features may, in fact, add nasties to orig. 8740 "pure clean" architecture.  So, if you're a Wolfson fan, the 70 may still be best choice for RedBook and non-DSD audio. Esp. in the dual-mono mode.
