Do you find a software dithered digital volume control as good as a analog volume control.?

With Pure music for example you can use their digital volume control to adjust gain to your dac so your system can be very simple.ie macmini to usb dac to amplifier to speakers. Is this approach as good sonically to keeping the digital volume fixed and using an analog volume control after your usb dac has converted to analog? I have read a paper by daniel weiss that basically says that a correctly dithered digital volume control has no sonic problems. If this is true then using Apple's Remote application to control volume thru Pure music itunes mac mini will yield an easy to use interface with volume control. Also very cost effective. What has been your experience?
