No soundcards found when using Miniboss and Raspberry Pi Zero W

Question

I have a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by a USB cable. Recently I bought a Miniboss DAC. I have tried half a dozen times different configurations, but I have never gotten the RPi to even detect the Miniboss. The Miniboss lights up when the RPi boots up.

pi@diviningspot:~ $ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:272: no soundcards found...

dmesg shows several messages like this:

[   17.455999] snd-allo-boss-dac soc:sound: ASoC: failed to init link Boss DAC: -517
[   17.456032] snd-allo-boss-dac soc:sound: snd_soc_register_card() failed: -517
[   17.481367] snd-allo-boss-dac soc:sound: ASoC: failed to init link Boss DAC: -517
[   17.481400] snd-allo-boss-dac soc:sound: snd_soc_register_card() failed: -517

os-release:

pi@diviningspot:~ $ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="10"
VERSION="10 (buster)"
VERSION_CODENAME=buster

HOME_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianForums"
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianBugs"

What can I do?

I know the device works because I used to use the mini-HDMI out and moode to stream music. This worked fine.
