Volt+ D Attenuator

I just got a Volt+ D, and and I’m having trouble adjusting the volume on the unit. The attenuator is really hard to turn, and just before each adjustment in volume, after I start turning but before I reach the next spot on the attenuator, a loud squelch from the source is sent to the speakers. I’m using an Alitov 24V/5A power supply. Is this normal? Do I need to break in the attentuator more so it's easier to turn?
