Macbook Pro DVI video out not recognised by Reciever (Yamaha RX-V2065)

Hi There,

I'm just setting up my new receiver and I want to play movies from my macbook pro via the mini display port to the receivers HDMI port. This is my set up...

- Yamaha RX-V2065

- Macbook pro (NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB)

- HDMI / DisplayPort Output Using apple HDMI converter (the little adapter plug) to HDMI4 port on receiver

- S/PDIF Optical Digital Audio Output to Optical Digital Input AV4 (this matches HDMI4 for the audio stream)

The macbook pro appears to registrar the exsistance of an external display (the screen flicks blue as the display card/software deals with the additional display) but then for one reason or another it is lost.

Is this an issue with my receiver or the mac? I read somewhere that the macs HDMI output isn't strictly compliant. Is this true? Could it be that the receiver is refusing to recognise a non compliant HDMI connection?

When plugged directly into the TV its fine. I would rather run through the receiver though as otherwise there are issue with sound lag while the receiver processes the audio digital stream.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I ran into the same problem with a mini port to hdmi converter on my mbp and the problem was the adapter itself and not the computer or the receiver (incidentally I have the same receiver as you and a 2010 MBP). I took it back to the apple store and have not had any issues since then. I would imagine the chain from my mbp is the same as yours (if I read correctly). You may want to try another minidisplay to hdmi adapter. Apple was kind enough to replace the defective one for free even though it was well past the 15 day exchange period. The problem started with little "sparklies" appearing on screen and progressed to just an intermittent blue screen that devolved into static snow. It then refused to accept input from the mbp at all. Just snow. I determined it to be the adapter by jiggling it a bit. The more I jiggled the worse it got until there was no picture at all. Hope that helps a bit. Got a sweet deal on that Yamaha amp...paid about 500 for it compared to its original 1400. Great receiver for my money anyway. Promptly blew my Pioneer 1019 out of the water which was not powering my B & W's as well as I had hoped. And hey a Burr-Brown DAC on every channel ya really can't beat it for cheap as it can be had now. Good luck.

I had my receiver reset itself on more than one occasion which resulted in various settings being lost like bi-wiring. As you know the receiver has dual hdmi outputs. I have accidentally hit the remote and lost one of the displays and spent several hours trying to figure out why everything was connected properly and wouldn't display. This doesn't sound like what you are describing but it's worth it to double check your monitor settings...I usually output to both even if I am only using one just to eliminate that snag. Hope you get 'er working.

thanks for the feedback bleedink. I think my problem is with the adapter as you point out in your first post. Odd that it still works no problem with my LG desktop monitor though...

Anyway I did get this working but only by splashing out on a 'Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter'. Because I have a 2010 MBP this will also pass the audio which is great as I don't have to worry about running the digital optical in with the HDMI. One less thing to set up and plug in.

If anyone is curious to know if their MBP will support the audio pass through heres how to check...

If you see "HDMI / DisplayPort Output" in the list then you'll be fine.

BTW... yeah loving my receiver but waiting on my Energy Floor Standers to arrive before I'll get proper appreciation. Currently using a set of Energy RC-Micros that I bought as rears. They just don't cut it for front speakers but they'll be great for the rears.

Cheers

yes that particular receiver really shines on my B&W's. I am not sure exactly what the quality of the particular DAC's they are using (tried to find some information on the internet but couldn't come up with more than just burr brown) but the fact that there is one for each channel really enhances the experience. The DAC inside my pioneer 1019 was not nearly as transparent sounding so your new speakers should really help. I was really blown away by how much changing the receiver in this instance helped (and the 1019 is well reviewed, particularly in comparison to the yamaha model we have) as the reviews our yamaha got were not so great in comparison. As I have found more and more great source material I have been able to assess those differences much more concretely. Money well spent!
