What is the best connection for listening to redbook files?

I had a sales person from The Cable Co. tell me S/pdif was better for redbook recordings.

I agree (assuming, of course, USB and S/PDIF cables of equal quality). In my opinion, it's better for PCM files in general.

Driving Vega with an Aries S/PDIF (coax, AES or Toslink optical) output should result in virtually no audio dropouts, even in Exact clock mode and switching sampling frequencies by playing different content.

 

I'm currently using a Lifatec Silflex multi-strand glass Toslink cable, with excellent results for redbook and high-res (up to 24/192) content.

Off topic...Will an Ipad Air 2 be sufficient to control the Aries? Does the battery stay charged for some time or do you keep it plugged in the charger when in use.

yes, iPad air 2 is enough.

The Air 2 is the newest model (if we disregard the Pro for a moment), so I'm not sure what you mean by your first question.
