First Aid Kit - Mixing

Recommended Posts

A couple of nights ago my girlfriend and I went to go see First Aid Kit. If you don't know much about the band I'll explain in brief. Two Swedish sisters singing folk music. One plays acoustic guitar the other keyboards. They both sing, often times in unison and they have a drummer.

For the stage setup, one gal was on the left the other the right. The drummer was in between but at the back of the stage. I can't say much about the mix of the audio at the show as we were standing far left.

The next day I got home and I was very excited to listen to some First Aid Kit but quickly found myself disappointed by the mixing. Both gals are essentially mixed on top of one another. I found it difficult to tell which sister was singing at any given time or to clearly identify one voice vs. the other when they were singing in unison.

So I wonder, why not mix them left and right? Is there a reason to mix two vocalists on top of one another as opposed to creating some separation?

Just curious to hear thoughts or reasons.

Cheers
