Garf
High points: The reissue opens up with a demo version of Soothe, always nice to have different version of a tune you like. Plume appears to be different, but not labeled as such. There is a lot of new (to me) music on the bonus disc, and the cassette demos. The original album reissue appears to be as well mastered as SD & Gish (Bob Ludwig I think). Low points: Bonus material is compressed to all get out. I mean, moderate to severe clipping across the board. Siamese Dream and Gish were 24/96, Pisces Iscariot was released as 24/44.1 for some unknown reason. Purchasing from TopSpin, always a low point, but at least I feel I am supporting the band more by buying through the website/TopSpin. The first two reissues were great, this one has issues. This is going to make me seriously consider what version of the Mellon Collie release I will buy. I won't bother plotting spectrum as this is 24/44.1 dynamic range info: foobar2000 1.1.8 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.0 log date: 2012-08-17 19:21:07 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: ? / ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR10 -5.87 dB -17.74 dB 2:36 ?-01 Soothe (demo) DR8 -0.55 dB -10.41 dB 3:21 ?-02 Frail & Bedazzled DR9 -0.54 dB -11.05 dB 3:38 ?-03 Plume DR10 -0.58 dB -12.45 dB 4:10 ?-04 Whir DR9 -0.58 dB -11.87 dB 3:32 ?-05 Blew Away DR9 -0.52 dB -10.55 dB 2:31 ?-06 Pissant DR5 -2.19 dB -8.89 dB 4:32 ?-07 Hello Kitty Kat DR10 -0.60 dB -11.54 dB 5:22 ?-08 Obscured DR11 -1.79 dB -16.14 dB 3:11 ?-09 Landslide DR8 -0.54 dB -11.58 dB 11:01 ?-10 Starla DR10 -0.50 dB -12.71 dB 3:20 ?-11 Blue DR9 -0.53 dB -10.57 dB 3:35 ?-12 A Girl Named Sandoz DR8 -0.50 dB -11.57 dB 4:16 ?-13 La Dolly Vita DR9 -0.60 dB -13.78 dB 2:22 ?-14 Spaced -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 14 Official DR value: DR9 Samplerate: 44100 Hz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 24 Bitrate: 2116 kbps Codec: PCM Disc 2 - Bonus Material foobar2000 1.1.8 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.0 log date: 2012-08-17 18:45:26 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: ? / ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR8 0.00 dB -9.66 dB 2:09 ?-15 Bye June (Ignoffo Sessions_2012 Mix) DR7 0.00 dB -8.63 dB 3:47 ?-16 My Dahlia (Ignoffo Sessions_2012 Mix) DR7 0.00 dB -8.86 dB 2:57 ?-17 Jesus Loves His Babies (Gish Sessions Rough Mix) DR7 0.00 dB -7.90 dB 2:40 ?-18 Cinnamon Girl (Ignoffo Sessions_2012 Mix) DR7 0.00 dB -8.02 dB 4:54 ?-19 Glynis (2012 Mix) DR10 0.00 dB -13.83 dB 6:55 ?-20 Crawl (Gish Sessions outtake) DR7 0.00 dB -9.14 dB 3:36 ?-21 Cinder Open (Eddy St_ demo_2012 Mix) DR8 0.00 dB -9.60 dB 3:13 ?-22 Blissed (Sadlands demo_2012 Mix) DR5 0.00 dB -6.64 dB 2:36 ?-23 Slunk (Live) (2012 - Remaster) DR6 0.00 dB -7.18 dB 3:56 ?-24 Jackie Blue DR6 0.00 dB -7.39 dB 4:35 ?-25 Venus in Furs (Live) DR7 0.00 dB -8.53 dB 3:46 ?-26 Translucent (Sadlands demo_2012 mix) DR9 0.00 dB -11.61 dB 1:55 ?-27 French Movie Theme (Siamese Sessions outtake) DR11 0.00 dB -14.44 dB 2:49 ?-28 Purr Snickety (Gish b-sides session outtake) DR8 0.00 dB -8.72 dB 5:18 ?-29 There It Goes (Demo_2012 Mix) DR10 0.00 dB -12.58 dB 2:50 ?-30 Vanilla (Ignoffo Sessions) DR7 0.00 dB -8.02 dB 15:14 ?-31 Why Am I So Tired (Live in studio demo) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 17 Official DR value: DR8 Samplerate: 44100 Hz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 24 Bitrate: 2116 kbps Codec: PCM Roon Rock running on a Gen 7 i5, Akasa Plao X7 fanless case. thrand1
Garf, Thanks for posting this. Very disappointing about the compression on the bonus material- I don't seem to remember the other reissue bonus tracks being THIS bad? After purchasing it, despite it being "only" 24/44.1, would you recommend the Pisces download to a Pumpkins fan who has never heard this album over purchasing the CD? I have been electing as of late to purchase high-res remasters/downloads over physical discs, and your input is welcome. Thanks again for posting this! -Tyler Office: iPod classic/iPad -> Shure SE425 IEM Home: Oppo BDP-83/Synology DS211j -> Integra DTR-7.8 -> Revel speakers Link to comment
Garf
If you were just to buy the album with no bonus material, then I would stick with the CD. As a Pumpkins fan (and because I have the other two reissues) , I would get the the whole deal, the download with the cassette demos, even with the compression. I did checked the other bonus material, and it didn't have compression issues. Sad that this reissue lowered the bar, lets hope Melon Collie comes out decent.
