USB Sound Settings

My Windows 11 PC allows me to set my PC sound output to "Realtec Speakers" (headphones plugged into PC) to 24-bit, 192,000 Hz, but it limits by usb output to 16-bit, 48,000 Hz. But my usb is plugged into my 24-bit 192k capable Fosi Audi DAC, which then is connected to nice passive speakers. Why can't I set (or how can I set) my usb output to 24-bit, 192k? Thanks.

Thank you so much!! I never noticed that before and was not careful when I purchased. I guess my options are to find a DAC that supports higher usb input, or perhaps more likely, look into optical connection (wondering if HDMI to optical converter may work?)

There are many USB to S/PDIF converters that support 24/192 such as minidsp USBStreamer B.

 

There are many capability variations:

• some USB to S/PDIF converter support only 16/44.1 and 16/48
• some support only 24/96 (cannot deliver 16/44.1 nor 16/48)
• some support 16/44.1, 24/44.1, 16/48, 24/48, 16/96 and 24/96
• some support 16/44.1, 24/44.1, 16/48, 24/48, 16/96, 24/96, 16/192 and 24/192
• some support 16/44.1, 24/44.1, 16/48, 24/48, 16/88.2, 24/88.2, 16/96, 24/96, 16/176.4, 24/176.4 ,16/192 and 24/192
• some support more exotic sample rates such as 16/32, 16/64, 16/128.

Some USB to S/PDIF converters support 24/192 only with coax output and TOSLINK is limited to 24/96 due to the optical transmitter limitation, most recent 24/192 capable converters support 24/192 with both coax and TOSLINK

 

24/176.4 support is needed to send DoP DSD 2.8MHz signal to DoP capable DAC.

 

HDMI to 24/192 S/PDIF conversion is technically possible but more challenging way to achieve it

 

Perfect. Thanks. PC doesn't have TOSLINI but just purchased a USB/SPDIF converter that says it handles 24/192k.
