IPAD / FLAC PLAYER & CAMERA CONNECT KIT

Looking at my recently purchased iPAD I became interested in using it as a "audio" playback system - mainly for the hell of it,i.e. in the same vein that led me to compile mpd on OSX 10.7.2.

 

To wit, I "purchased" FLAC PLAYER and a CAMERA CONNECT KIT. iPAD was "mounted" on Apple's iPad dock - portrait mode, (analogue line-out being used by small headphone amp) and CAMERA CONNECT KIT - USB was plugged into dock's rear, with B&W M1s attached to CCK. (ok, I know the M1s are limited to 16 / 48K, but's its a start.)

 

I uploaded "Bitches Brew" (24 / 192), "Kent Poon's Audiophile Jazz Prologue III" (24 / 96). The sound from FLAC PLAYER is impressive - no hint of any system noise, clean and precise. It "handled" the 24 / 192 kHz Bitches Brew with no issues at all. (Only issue is iPAD storage - music vs ibooks collection).

 

Next step will be to acquire a small powered hub, so I can try out my asynch NuForce uDAC II - which will deliver 96k to the M1s via the analogue input, plus allow "96k" headphone listening. (Bed side use)

 

iPAD certainly would make a good REDBOOK streaming player & HOME SHARING alleviates storage issues. With FLAC PLAYER it makes a decent "portable Hi REZ" system.

 

As a bonus - FLAC PLAYER worked well with the B&W M1 remote control - full volume / playback control.

Hello, I'm new to the forum and, this is my first post. I am using my ipad gen 1, and home sharing to stream to my 2 channel audio system. I do have the CCK but, am not using it right now. I know it works with my usb DAC, but the usb port on my Bel Canto Dac 3 is limited to 16/44. right now I'm using the Pure i20 dock to feed the dac thru coaxial digital connecntion. This works well and the sound is incredible. I have a a 16/44 cd of fleetwood mac and flac of this album. I converted the flac to 24/96 apple lossless files and there is a differents in detail and soundstage between the cd and the hd files so I'm assuming my ipad is playing the 24/96 files. I'm wondering if anyone else is using this method instead of the CCK to pass hi res files. I am in putting all my cds on my hardrive to play them thru my ipad, I don't even turn on my cd player any more since adding my music to my hard drive. my system now is ipad>pure i20 dock>Bel Canto dac 3>Red wine sg. 30>Lowther Alerions speakers. I'm using my Dac as Pre also and, has different digital inputs. Anyway my questions is is anybody else NOT using the CCK to pass his res file thru the ipad and if so what are you using. thanks

Even with a dock that by-passes the inbuilt dac that you will get 24 / 96 if using the "music app" to play back ALAC files. There are old threads here on CA discussing this - and as far as I am aware, the only software player that is KNOWN to output a true 24 / 96 "stream" (as in documented) is FLAC PLAYER.

 

Certainly would be good to know if GOLDEN EAR / CARPICCIO - both software players that support HI-REZ files - can also output 24 / 96 streams, but I lack the tools / skills etc to confirm this.

great info, looks like I should look into the flac player. The only thing is I would need a Usb to spdif converter, my Usb input on my dac does not support 24/96. I have seen music fidelity v-link work with the ipad and CCK, Just wondering if I need a power usb hub. thanks

Ok, now I'm confused here is a test that benchmark did.

My Ears are telling me that the music is better than the cd of the files I have, more detail and tighter bass with deeper sounstage. the imaging is more fucus than the cd too. Jazz voice music is down right spooky. these files I'm listeing to is flac 24/96 converted to apple loss less at 24/96 streaming to thru the ipad to pure i20 dock and to my Bel canto dac3 using coaxial connection.

To add to the confusion, if hi rez playback is based on the software, can my iPhone 4s playback 24/96 files using Flac Player and Pure i20? My understanding is the Pure i20 dock functions as a CCK. I also have read in a number of locations that the CCK does not work with the iPhone 4s (at least when it comes to photos) so is 24/96 transfer a hardware issue or a software issue?

I don't have the equipment or expertise to know determine if either the CCK or the Pure i20 work as advertised or not. And there is so much mis-information out there, I thought I would jump in on this thread to see if there are any FACTS out there. If you believe what you read, an iPad with Flac player or one of the newer players sitting on a Pure i20 dock can play hi rez files via AirPlay or directly thru an audiophile DAC into a high dollar high def audio system and I could be in audio nirvana! If that's the case, why am I not reading anything about it?
