About Me

  1. Hi, Wondering if somebody has already tried to use run OSX on a CAPS server? Yes I know it seems strange. I currently run Windows + JRiver on my CAPS Server, but I'm not happy with the development of JRiver. Audirvana looks much more user friendly. Specially when it come to use "A+ remote" to access streaming subscription compared to Jriver+Jremote limited (/inexistant) option for that.
  2. My main music library is mostly FLAC, but I like to have AAC copies in iTunes. I found an automatic and free utility to do this, which although not updated in a long time, works fine with High Sierra and iTunes 12. https://github.com/cbguder/FLAC2iTunes
  3. I'm going to have some basic questions, the first of which is about ripping. The articles in CA academy on ripping are 6yrs old. The "what format" is probably more accurate now than ever given the plunging prices of storage. However, while the overall strategy is probably still relevant, the software references seem very out of date. GD3's software still references Windows XP, Vista or 7, not exactly current and no mention of OSX. I'm on a Mac so obviously I can use iTunes to rip to AIFF. Is there some other software that is a superior solution? Thanks!
  4. New GLM 1.50 for OSX and Windows GLM is finally optimised for Maverick and should have better stability. Rather looks like it self, has a few improvements and is still dependent on XQuartz on OSX :-/ Download GLM 1.50 and releasenotes Download latest XQuartz Please post experiences, good as well as bad.
  5. Following a successful insurance claim, I have an amount to spend on a new audio computer. I previously used a 2009 2.26 gHz Mac mini with SSDs, Mountain Lion & Audirvana+. I want a more family oriented HTPC this time (previously everything was stripped down for audio only). I can have a separate user account for audio if needs be, but I want the machine to be used by the family for streaming HD movies, and light gaming (minecraft etc). It should be fairly future proof. I would like to interface with it via Android tablet & phone (we have no other iThings at home). I am looking at i5 NUC builds & mini ITX builds which are low power, passive cooled SSD machines, or for the same money middle range Mac minis with spinning drives & SMPS. I don't doubt either either machine is more than capable in terms of hardware, but still, a mini ITX build appeals due to a sense of 'audiophile good practice', ie passive cooling, SSD, low power (optional LPSU) and possible PCI expansion. Yet a Mac would have OSX, which is great IMO. So although a modern Intel PC gives more hardware for the same money, I also have to decide between W8.1 and OSX. It has been suggested to me that the Mac will sound better despite the hardware differences, as "OSX is just better for audio". Has anybody any experience of comparing the two operating systems SQ? Or failing that, observations? My impression is this doesn't matter too much, but as I am waiting for the settlement to arrive I might as well ask the question.
  6. Hi, I have an issue with my media center, a Mac Mini used with my HiFi system. I'm using my Mac Mini, version 2010, the first aluminum, running on OS X 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard) to run XBMC, in its latest version, EDEN. Initially, as my preamplifier (Atoll PR300) doesn't have any digital input, i was sending first image & sound to my LCD (Loewe Individual 40 Selection DR +), using HDMI cable, and second sound to my preamplifier using the LCD RCA output. Pure happiness. A few months ago I acquired a DAC, the same brand (DAC200 Atoll). This DAC has the following connectors: - 3 optical digital inputs and three coaxial digital inputs independent. - 1 USB (Type B) - 1 RCA analog - 1 optical digital output and a coaxial digital output with reformatting data in both directions: Coaxial optics and coaxial optics. The idea is to take advantage of the digital to analog conversion DAC instead of the Mac mini, software against hardware, mainly using USB with a Wireworld Ultraviolet. Unfortunately for me I noticed some cracklings, initially on playback but since few days it's also on XBMC sounds. I've checked the XBMC settings, of course stereo is selected in the system settings, even on movies & TV shows settings and XBMC recognizes the USB driver Atoll as OS X does. I've tested two DAC, two brand new, I've tested in 10.6 and 10.7 with clean install, also with a clean install XBMC without any results. For several weeks I try my luck with the XBMC dev team, if this is a bug or an incorrect setting, it seems from these last that the level of OS X that it crashes. here is the actual situation on XBMC forum : http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=128181 The actual log shoes the following issue : 14:26:44 T:2965811200 ERROR: CCoreAudioRenderer::InitializePCM: The selected device (ATOLL USB Audio 2.0) does not have a speaker layout configured. 8. Hi folks, Like many of you, I keep switching from one music player application to another, in pursuit of the best sound/experience combination. Lately I've come back to the JRMC+JRemote combination, which (at this point in time, for me) seems to be the best one currently. Yes, HQPlayer possibly sounds the best, and maybe I haven't spent enough time fiddling with it, but its spartan user interface (and complex options) makes it too difficult to use (again, for me), and even more so over an iPad Parallels Access remote connection (I especially hate that the iPad keyboard comes up every time I do anything simple, like change tracks) even for simple use, let alone playlist setups. I love the Audirvana sound and its native Mac interface, but (and maybe I'm doing it wrong) I've never been able to figure out how to reliably set up playlists that survive library changes, and even at its best, trying to control Audirvana via the iPad (even with the great Parallels Access automatic full-screen function) is way too fiddly. And the Amarra interface is so ugly (reminds me of a 90's era WinAmp skin) I just can't bear to use it (yup perhaps I care too much about the aesthetics...). So, until Audirvana gets its iPad remote app (hopefully soon...), I'm (at least this week!) back to JRMC+JRemote. JRemote really is fantastic - I've tried the Linn Kinsky and other remote apps, but only JRemote feels like a non-beta, mature app. Also, the latest version of JRMC now has a great "Pono" (heh!) skin which gives it close to a true Mac native Yosemite app appearance (thank god!). So, so far, so good. Decent SQ from the Mac player. Decent iPad remote experience. However, the one viper in this acoustic Garden of Paradise that crops up again and again, is the tendency of JRMC to crash. Repeatedly. Whenever I try to change tracks too quickly. Essentially, if I start playing a track, and then, within 2-3 seconds I try playing another track, JRMC crashes to the desktop, with the usual OS X Crash Report window showing up. If not the first time, then the 2nd or 3rd time I do the rapid track change thingy. Yes, 100% reproducible. So, why not just avoid this silly behaviour, you say... Well, unfortunately for me my missus and house guests do sometimes use the system too, and it's not practicable to conduct pre-use training for everyone! Enter Lingon, by a (I think) Swedish developer called Peter Borg. https://www.peterborgapps.com/lingon/ With Lingon X 2.0 (there is also a crippled version, Lingon 3.0 on the Mac App Store, which I haven't tried due to bad reviews) I've been able to (extremely easily and quickly) get JRMC to automatically restart every time it crashes. JRemote is also pretty good in that it pretty much automatically re-establishes a connection with JRMC whenever this happens (although one sometimes needs to hit the refresh icon to fix some playlist errors). Kudos, to this Peter Borg fellow, for Lingon, and for keeping it really cheap ($5 to $10). However, the frequent JRMC crashes really bug me, notwithstanding the above band-aid fix. Is this "crash on rapid track changes" problem unique to my system, or does anyone else experience it? If so, I was curious if anybody had a suggestion as to how I can fix it? Many thanks in advance! 10. Hi everybody, as I found out "Wavepad" is widely unknown to this forum. It is only mentioned in one post. That is why I registered. Apparently nobody around here abused this audio editing software in order to just play music. To my ears its audio engine is very good; I also have Logic Studio and Audirvana+, but Wavepad presents you all the little details you missed. There is a catch, though. It is not a proper player, i. e. there is no player functionality whatsoever, it is all manual. You can download a trial version for free which will turn into a restricted demo version after a while - still good enough to play your stuff. There is also a PC version. wavepad download source btw: I am not associated with nch in any way.
