  1. I'm doing a clean install on my music-dedicated mini and would like to know what is the latest and greatest of the optimizations I can do. Machine: - mac mini 2012, i7 quad, 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD (Mercury 6G) - External HD over FW - Bridged networking: Thunderbolt/ethernet adapter bridged to internal ethernet - network switch to thurnderbolt, internal ethernet to dCS Rossini - LPS (Uptone JS-2) with internal mini MMK board - Run headless with one of those dongles in the HDMI port keep graphics alive (screen sharing very slow otherwise) OS: macOSX 10.14.4 (downloaded the 10.14.4 installer so this is my scratch starting point) Players: Roon (over network to dCS Rossini) Audirvana (not used much at the moment) I run installation last night and did all of the standard things like turn wifi, bluetooth off, disable spotlight, etc. I did NOT disable SIP so I cannot disable Notification services, etc. View on disabling SIP? Any recommendations? Thx.
  2. All, Welcome the to VR MINI general discussion thread! Last month we began shipping the VR MINI. Here is a link to the MINI page: Vinnie Rossi MINI PURE DC-4-EVR Power Supply http://www.vinnierossi.com/mini/ Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Vinnie
  3. G'day - First some background then the newbie questions: I'm looking to move away from my trusty Squeezebox to better handle DSD files on my main system. I'm looking at using JRiver to translate on the fly into a PCM USB DAC. Someday I might consider a DSD DAC or a two-processor DAC, but for now I'm happy with a Hegel HD25. I've used Squeezebox for years from a ReadyNAS, and so far I still plan on using other SBT's in my home office and workshop, but can foresee some frustration when future DSD files are not available there. Also I'm no videophile, although we are getting a Sony 4K 850B TV tomorrow, so it could be good if the CAPS server could do duty for some video streaming or storage unbeknownst to me, and very handy if the TV functions as a computer monitor for setup control plus play vacation photo slideshows. The music server and streaming video are my only sources, and I like the simplicity. I want to continue using a smartphone to run the main system, and have zero experience with JRiver, but it comes recommended and has smartphone apps. Due to space restriction, I'm leaning very heavily towards the Small Green v3 micro Zuma. I surfed this site for hours and hours yesterday but still have pesky newbie questions: - how large a mSATA drive is appropriate? There's 60GB, 250GB and upwards at a cost. I have a spare 256GB 2.5" SSD, but Andrew at Small Green tells me that it won't fit so I won't quibble. The music and photos are on the NAS. - how much RAM? 8GB? 16GB? - My main laptop computer on the home network is Windows 7; will I have any trouble controlling the CAPS Windoze 8.1? - If I ever wanted to re-install the OS, how is that done without an optical drive? A USB thumb drive and the bios is set to point there first? - Do you leave these CAPS on 24/7? How do you power up/down & reboot? Sometimes we have power outages here and I'm not keen on adding spendy and large battery power to the CAPS. - is there recommended wifi hardware? Via a USB dongle? It'll be a few weeks before I'm able to hard-wire in Ethernet. - I'm not convinced that a LPS is necessary, and it'd be great to do A/B, but if I get one I'm leaning towards Teddy Pardo 12/4 for size and apparent quality and will let the MB power the SOtM. If there's smaller options then I'm keen to know. I know that's a lot. I'm ready to order and looking forward to some gentle guidance to help reduce growing pains. Thanks so much - Ralph ascent-design.com/audio/
  4. Hi all, Thanks for all your help with my earlier thread linked here As I posted on that thread today, I'm finally getting wonderful sound out of my Mini setup. Now I need your suggestions for an elegant way to browse and control the library. At first, iPad Remote seemed like the ideal solution. I like to listen to music while talking/drinking with friends, and it was great to be able to just hand someone the iPad to select music. But after months of using it to access the iTunes library on the Mini I'm giving up. I'm listing the reasons below along with screenshots. I'm just not sure how to replace my iPad with iTunes Remote. I need a simple solution that anyone can use. At this point it seems my only option is to hook up a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to the Mini. But this sucks! I don't want to have to get up and use a computer every time I put on an album. The only other alternative I know of is Apple TV. It would be nice to use a TV interface. But I'm afraid the interface might be cumbersome for browsing through hundreds of albums, and I'm not sure if the Apple TV interface supports playlists? And I don't wish to route the music through the Apple TV at the cost of sound quality. And I use Pure Music- will the music streamed out of the mini to the Apple TV still go through Pure Music? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Derek Why do I find iTunes Remote unusable? First of all, I have over a thousand albums (mostly classical) to which I have spent a lot of time adding metadata and scanning/downloading album covers. The covers are an important way for me to search for the album I want to hear. For instance, when I am looking for a particular recording of Horowitz playing Rachmaninov it's frustrating only to have the album names- they are all pretty much the same. But when presented with a list of album covers I can pick out the right one immediately. Unfortunately, iTunes Remote on iPad doesn't cache album covers. So each time I want to browse the albums I have to wait for each album cover to download. It takes a while, even on a fast wireless network. So I spend a lot of time just waiting for the covers to load. As you can see in the image below, the remaining five album covers haven't loaded yet. It's frustrating! A while ago when switching to iTunes I decided to put the Composer in the Artist field for all of my albums. I know some of you might be against adapting metadata for a particular software program, but I liked the ability to just click on "Artists" in iTunes and see a neat list of composers rather than a haphazard long list of a bunch of performers/ensembles/etc. Unfortunately the Artists tab in iTunes Remote doesn't have the pure Album view I prefer, rather a list of album covers with each title in the album. And once again, the album covers must reload each time! Finally, I've found that iTunes smart playlists are a wonderful way to browse albums on the mini or my macbook pro. They allow you to select the view type, which I invariably set to Album. However, the playlist view in iTunes Remote ONLY has a list view, which is hopelessly unusable for a large number of classical tracks. It takes forever to scroll down and find the right album, if you can find the album at all. And of course there are no album covers shown:
  5. I recently moved and have my system cobbled together in my new house, which lacks the dedicated room my last place had. Here is what I have: In my office, I have a Mac Mini, dual core I7, 8gb ram, 256GB SSD connected via Ethernet to a Drobo 5N with about 1 gb of music on it. I also listen to a lot of internet radio streamed to iTunes. This computer is my main work unit so nothing is optimized for music. I do have A+ on it. The Mac Mini is connected via 1.5 meter generic USB to a Berkeley USB. The Berkeley USB is connected to an Alpha Dac series one by a 20’ Canare DA206 110ohm digital cable and that cable crosses a doorway on the way to the living room (not ideal in length or routing). The balanced outputs of the Alpha Dac are connected to a Meyer Sound CP-10 and in turn to a pair of Meyer Sound HD-2 monitors. The RCA outputs go to a JL112 sub. The system sounds pretty good but not as good as I would like. The room has tons of volume and isn’t treated in any way but the EQ has helped on that front. Here are the changes I am looking at: --Buying a new rack to organize everything and help with vibration control. --I have a BPT 3.5 Signature Plus that I want to add in to clean up the AC. --Buying a new server, I have spent hours and hours reading here on this one and can’t figure out if I should get a new mini, a 2009 mini, a macbook pro, a Zuma, SOtM sMS-1000, or other server. I’d love to avoid the cable to the office. I’m coming to the conclusion that the differences are really minor but my system is VERY resolving so I should hear more than most if there are differences. I don’t really want to buy more than one to try so I’ll have to go on options. I am not married to the Apple system or Itunes but I’m no computer IT guy either. I posted here as this is the toughest issue. --Should I access the music wirelessly? Lastly, FWIW, I listen to jazz, rock and a lot of very dynamic live recordings; this system is built around the latter. I’ve had better systems for solo vocalists or simple ensembles but nothing that handles a live Grateful Dead recording like this one. Any and all opinions and suggestions would be great.
  6. Hello, I am currently controlling my Mac Mini using the standard screen sharing. But if no display adapter is connected to it, the refresh rate is very slow. I've read many others suffer from this. I read that there is a way to tweak a VGA adapter using a simple resistor and this way have the Mac Mini think it has a display connected to it. To all the headless mac mini people out there: Is this the way everyone is doing it? Or is there a simpler way? Thanks, Nuno
  7. I am new here, and super discouraged right now with the Mac Mini setup we have. Before I get into that though, let me explain my setup so I can get your expert feedback on the best course forward. Keep in mind our goal is ultimate SQ within the realm of a computer (mac mini) server. We are using a 2012 Mac Mini (stock) with a Promise Pegasus R6 setup for music file storage. From the mac mini we go to an Oppo BDP-105 via an AudioQuest Cinnamon Async USB. This allows us to use the Oppo's Sabre DAC which is really good IMHO. From there we go from the Oppo to B&O System 3 via HDMI and from the System 3 to 5 BeoLab 5s over Cat7 ethernet. On the Mac Mini we ripped the files 48kHz/16bit stereo AIFF and use Apple remote app on an iPad to drive the music from server to speaker. Compared to a disc in the Oppo we are talking about 20% less body and dimension to the tracks played from the Mac Mini, the files from the Mini lack range and are a lot flatter, by about 20%... so pretty noticeable. This is our first time with a HiFi setup using a music server like this and I realize iTunes is not doing the files justice. What I need to know is how can we get the files to be closer to the CD, like 95% of the CD? I have looked into Amarra, also swapping the standard HD for SSD in the Mini. What setup could I be forgetting here? There is so much to learn and it is discouraging because we know what the system is capable of and we really want the ease of digital playback from the iPad but the SQ just isn't there.... Help these newbies!
  8. I just purchased the hiface1 interface which I have plugged into the back of a mac mini with SL. I've downloaded the software and set my sound output to be the HiFace. I am running it to a Bryston BDA-1 DAC. Software is iTunes with BitPerfect. Is there any other settings I need to set as I am not getting a signal to my DAC? Any help would be appreciated.
  9. This NSM Model 5SE speakers are in excellent overall condition. Come with grills, manuals, original box. They are an acoustically matching pair, serial numbers confirm that. My price is $200. New they were selling for $499 and they still command excellent value. The review below summarizes my impressions of them. It is hard to buy speakers of this quality now, especially SE version of Model 5 with all the upgrades. The Model 5 Signature Edition is a hot rod version of the Model 5. The cabinet is a hand rubbed white Russian Baltic birch plywood cabinet, long known for its anti-resonant properties and sonic quality. The Model 5 SE is hot rodded with Superior ™ binding posts, polypropelene capacitor by-passed with film foil capacitor, metal oxide resistor, and DH Labs silver sonic internal wire. Imagine sound, imaging, and soundstaging even more exquisite than that of the standard Model 5. Buyer pays actual shipping and PP fees. I have perfect scores on Audiogon and eBay if you need to see them just let me know. Buy with confidence and please review detailed hi-res pictures. SPECIAL FEATURES: Magnetically shielded Time Coherent Point Source Design: time-aligned, two-way, first-order, point source, acoustic suspension Drivers: 1 inch soft dome, ferro-cooled tweeter, 4.5 inch carbon fiber full-range driver Crossovers: 18 AWG laminated copper inductor, polypropeline capacitor, non-inductive wire wound resistor, multi-strand copper to tweeter, inductor is wired directly between full-range driver and terminal. Cabinet: acoustic suspension Connectors: gold plated copper five-way binding posts Review summarizes it best, they are truly holographic: "The only speaker I could find that could cast a more rock-solid center image is the utterly minuscule, stupidly-good-at-the-price, ... NSM Model 5SE, which shoots images in the room like a laser and beats out just about any speakers in this regard. The little NSMT presents center-placed vocal images as if they are right THERE, like a softball hovering in the air. It's almost eerie and, no doubt, the Model 5's fit-in-the-palm-of-your-hand size helps."
