About Me

  1. Hi there, the setup is as follows: Qobuz studio plan Linn Kazoo on iPhone 6s Sonore microrendu in DLNA (settings to Lossless FLAC) USB asynchronous to Naim Dac V1 When playing back 192kHz albums, the highest the chain gets is up to 96 kHz. This is shown on Kazoo and the V1. Can someone help or does someone have an idea? Thanks!!
  2. Hi: I'm new here, having been successfully using my new microRendu for around 3 weeks. Currently I am streaming music over ethernet to the microRendu in my living room from my iMac's LMS files in the back of the house. To simplify the music streaming setup, I am interested in getting an NAS unit to add to the network, and locate it next to the microRendu in the living room. I am considering NAS models from SYNOLOGY, WESTERN DIGITAL, and perhaps QNAP. I use iPeng 9 on my iPad currently to access and control the LMS files on my iMac. Having read the User Manuals and internet reviews and articles for them, it is not fully clear to me which of these three mentioned NAS companies' units work best and most reliably with SqueezeLite and LMS on their NAS streaming to the microRendu. Please help me by offering a reasonably detailed explanation of which of these have worked best for you and why. Thank you.
  3. All, Welcome the to VR MINI general discussion thread! Last month we began shipping the VR MINI. Here is a link to the MINI page: Vinnie Rossi MINI PURE DC-4-EVR Power Supply http://www.vinnierossi.com/mini/ Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Vinnie
  4. These are times full of choices I've got a microRendu with LPS-1 and I'm very happy with the upgrade in soundquality it gave me. Now there are several options to upgrade without spending too much money at once: 1) upgrade the microRendu to ultraRendu. 2) add the isoRegen and keep the microRendu 3) update the microRendu hardware to V1.4 (with better clock) Investment in the three option won't differ much. Because there is so much praise for the isoRegen I leaning to this option. However in that case I have to power isoRegen or microRendu with the iFi iPower. The update to V1.4 is not my favorite option because shipment costs to Europe. It's a bit early to ask about experiences with ultraRendu but it won't be long now. Any thoughts?
  5. Hello, can anyone help guiding the decision? I cannot afford both the microrendu and the USB isolator/regenerator. Which one should come first as an investment? Where would you put your money first to improve the quality of the audio system?
  6. Is anyone been able to use the software version of Dirac with their Microrendu or similar DLNA network player? If so can you please describe your signal path. What software are you using, Jriver, HQPLayer, Roon etc.
  7. First off, I am not a computer guy (translated, "low knowledge") but having been a reader of CA for years thought I'd see if deep knowledge here can help me get to the end zone quicker (flailing about currently.) ISSUE: songs skip on a regular basis, can't isolate issue, but guy says to start with replacing the Drobo 5-Bay - sound is okay, but I've had this setup in place for 6+ years - time to solve the skipping and upgrade sound. Current equipment/setup: DROBO NAS --> Netgear Prosafe 8 port switch --> Mac Mini (Audirvana) --> Musical Fidelity V Link 192 --> Musical Fidelity M1 DAC to pre amp (Vincent pre amp and power amp out to Focal Electra 1008 BEs. Targeted equipment/setup: Based on lots of reading (understanding half of it), I'd like to consider adding the Melco N1A, the sonicTransporter and microRendu - but I have the feeling some of these may overlap? I am fine moving over to Roon as long as it will read 45k music files off the Melco N1A. Add'l questions - want to keep the MF M1 DAC if possible - will microRendu --> MF V Link 192 --> MF M1DAC work? Does it make sense? Is M1 DAC compatible with the hardware/software we are talking about here? Any need to keep the Mac Mini in the system or get rid of it? Again, thank you for your patience with the amateur nature of the question above, but it's been a challenge for me to plan the new system only half understanding what each piece does. Any/all help, suggestions, guidance, or even a "Just do this, and it will work/sound great" is hugely appreciated.
  8. I bought a microrendu 2 days ago and I feel I have to get a lot of accessories to make a "simple" system "complicated". The reason to choose microrendu is due to its simply design. Now I have to play with router / NAS / Music Servers / Extensions and worry about degrade of sound quality. My original plan is Sotm SMS1000Q WE (or any other optimized PC, like CAD, Mojo etc). For more details about an optimized PC : any PC with low power assumption (generate less noise), separated power supply to USB, low noise circuit design, internal power filter and linear power supply ,EMI isolation, low jitter clock etc. Any kind of optimized PC can feed signal to USB DAC with highest bit rate support via STABLE PHYSICAL connection. [PC - USB DAC + linear power supply]. How about Microrendu? I was attracted by the CA reviews and bought it. Now I realize the system is not simple at all and the system may have inferior SQ due to ethernet transport parameters, plus, the routers and photoelectric conversion modules of those systems are not audiophile grade. [Music Server / Router / Microrendu / USB DAC / Several linear power supply / Maybe Ethernet Switch / NAS]. How could I convince myself to invest further in microrendu system because I could not see any advantage now. How about SOUND QUALITY? Thanks for any suggestions.
  9. I haven't come across a thread focused specifically on feeding a microRendu with a signal from HQPlayer, so thought I'd start one (please let me know if there is one already - did a search, couldn't find one). I've run into a problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with. As I've mentioned in another thread, I’ve been playing around with the following setup: Roon -> HQPlayer -> microRendu -> iFi Nano DSD Most of my early listening was without using HQP’s filters or modulators and sending out ‘raw’ 16/44.1, just to get everything working properly. I had absolutely no problems, and everything worked perfectly. I then started applying some PCM to DSD conversion: I started with poly-sinc-2s and ASDM7 outputting 11.2896 MHz. This worked perfectly. I then changed ASDM7 to DSD7 256+fs. This sounded a bit better to me. Again, everything worked perfectly. I then changed poly-sinc-2s to poly-sinc. It took about 30 secs for playback to begin (my music server just has a lowly i3 CPU), but when it did, the SQ was transformed. Now it was very, very good! And this is where things started to go wrong. At the end of the track, the playback simply stopped. And I've not been able to get anything to work since: I closed Roon and tried to play directly from HQP – nothing worked. I closed HQP and restarted. I got the 'Failed to open audio device' error message. I started Roon and selected RoonReady in the Audio App Switcher in microRendu. RoonReady worked fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled HQP, and reselected NAA in the Audio App Switcher in microRendu. I still get the 'Failed to open audio device' error message. I have a feeling that the audio device (in my case, the iFi) is being hogged somewhere, but have no idea where or by what. Any ideas or thoughts would be most welcome. Cheers, Mani.
  10. Has anybody out there in the CA world had any luck using Dirac Live with the microrendu in a windows 10 environment? I am considering buying the MiniDSP all digital Dirac box to insert between my MR and DAC but I thought it would be wise to test it out first to see if I like the results. I have tried taking test measurements using Linn Songcast. Songcast shows up in Diracs "Test Signal Playback Device" column as Speakers (Linn Songcast Wave). I can get as far as selecting a mic and sometimes into the test tone window. Have even gotten the mic levelling tones to come through the MR into the speakers a couple times but when I try to switch to the run test window my system bluescreens with a system error created by songcast. Driver_IRQL Not Less or Equal error : sytem fail Songcast.com I have tried routing the the test tones through Jriver into Songcast. Cant quite seem to find an output in Jriver that wants to work. The odd one being using the JRVAD (Wave) output in Dirac to Jriver created a delay in test tones that came out of my speakers after the test tone recording time had ended. I tried outputting to Jriver ASIO in Dirac then routing Jriver to Songcast Wave (Kernal Streaming) with no luck. Jriver will play music to MR over this setting but not getting any test tones from Dirac into Jriver. Has anyone had luck routing Dirac through Jriver? Does anyone know of another Virtual Soundcard to DNLA application that works similar to Linn Songcast that might be worth a try? Any other routing suggestions? Thanks in advanced.
  11. Mytek just released a firmware update (2.34) for the Brooklyn enabling it to support USB HID volume control. Mytek's release notes: https://mytekdigital.com/download_library/firmware/BrooklynDAC_firmware_readme.txt Plugging my Brooklyn directly into my mac via USB worked just as expected: I could use the volume slider in the Roon software to adjust the Brooklyn's hardware volume settings. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get this to work through microRendu. I set the Volume Control setting in the microRendu > Settings > RoonReady > Volume Control to Hardware: But in Roon when I try change the volume, it says "Volume control is Fixed" And the Roon > Device Setup > External Volume Control drop down is disabled and fixed at None: Interestingly, after updating the Brooklyn's firmware to 2.34 the microRendu > Apps > DAC Diagnostics > "Set DAC to MAX volume" button works now (it didn't before). Has anyone been able to get their microRendu to work with the latest Brooklyn firmware, or another DAC supporting USB HID Volume control?
  12. Music listening used to be simple. You had your music on vinyl and used a turn table connected to an amp & speakers to play it. Bamm. Dark Side of the Moon in all of three seconds. Okay, maybe five. I've gone from one possible configuration to another, finding significant flaws in each of them before finally landing on the Cambridge CXN all-in-one solution. But I'm convinced there must be a much better solution, and in fact, I'm beginning to believe we can largely get back what we had in paragraph 1 while enjoying instant access to our entire music libraries, and without spending a fortune. I MAY have found a way. The purpose of this thread is finding confirmation, correction, redirection, etc. regarding one possible configuration using the ever popular microRendu. Please forgive the over simplifications. You are the most sophisticated group in the universe, and I love that about you, but I'm getting older and don't grasp some of these concepts as quickly. My current understanding as well as where I'm headed is the following: 1. Best case scenario, a music library is stored, as well as managed and played, on a network-connected PC, Mac, or NAS located somewhere else in the house (I believe the reason for this is a significant reduction in noise is made possible by keeping each electrical component in the audio chain separated into its own electrical circuit). In my case, the Windows 10 PC is a home theater computer (HTPC) with JRiver Media Center (JRMC) as music player, manager, & server software. An iPad Air with JRemote is used as a remote control. 2. The still-digitized music is sent (streamed) over the network and must be received in the music-listening room by a "renderer" (in my case, the microRendu) which converts the "data stream" into digital music. It is then sent to a directly connected digital-to-analog converter (a.k.a. DAC - in my case, the Emotiva Stealth DC-1) which is then connected to your amp & speakers. In short: Win10/JRMC HTPC with internal flac library > ethernet cable > router > ethernet cable > microRendu > USB cable > DC-1 DAC > RCA or Balanced cable > amp & speakers; controlled by iPad Air/JRemote. Is this a configuration you could live with? If not, why; and what would you do differently? Thank you.
  13. I’ve been searching this forum, but couldn’t find anything that answered all my questions. I use a iMac with a remote wireless hard drive to store music and an Apple time capsule router,, and would like to feed into a usb dac (bitfrostmb) for a remote headphone station. I’m looking to alternatives to an airport express to feed the dac because it only allows optical digital output ( other than analogue) and has the Apple airplay limits on hd. I understand that audirvana is now compatible with microrendu, but I don’t have direct internet access through an Ethernet. Would it be possible to use an airport express in client mode to convert the wireless signal to Ethernet and then feed the microrendu through the AE Ethernet output, all controlled by audirvana. If this works, would hd audio be downsampled to 16/44, when I am using audirvana and would I lose audirvanas sound enhancements?
  14. okay I have had an annoying problem using A+ to control an mr. my office system has remote drive-i-mac-audirvana-eitr-modi. My main system has ethernet-microrendu-usb-Gumby, controlled by a+ on the iMac. basically, I have occasions with no sound in the main system even though the microrendu is selected in A+. I confirmed that my computer is seeing the microrendu and the microrendu is seeing the Gumby. After much frustration, I was able to fix things by physically removing the connection between the iMac and the eitr and restarting. For the moment everything is working and I am able to toggle between systems by changing the output selection in A+. But it feels like there is an intermittent compatibility issue between A+ and eitr, where A+ at times will try to send a signal to the eitr, even though I’ve chosen mr as output. any other explanations?
  15. So, i have been running my audio system off of a 10 yer old PC running XP until now. The only things on this computer are JRiver and Chrome to run Tidal. I know it's a security risk, but since the only time I ever access the outside world is through the Tidal website, which is my home page, I figured the risk was minimal. Yesterday a notification came up saying that Chrome will no longer receive updates, nor will flash. I think my time with this cheap solution may have come to an end. We just recently bought a house, so I was not planning on spending money on audio upgrades for a while, but it seems as though it may be necessary. I've considered all of the available options and I've come up withe the least expensive, option that has the most long term upgrade potential. I currently have an iMac in another room that accesses the network by wifi only (the house is not wired for ethernet) that will be running Audirvana Plus 3.1, controlled by the iPhone app. I planned to purchase a refurbished MicroRendu and and iFi power supply that will plug into the router which is near the audio system. With this setup though, I have a few questions that I'm having a hard time finding the answer to. I'm sure the answers are there somewhere, but I just haven't found it. 1. Has anyone had any experience with the refurbished MicroRendus? Anything i should be concerned about? 2. Should I expect any problems with the server being on a wifi connected computer as opposed to via ethernet? I don't have a good alternative right now. 3. I understand that the Audirvana iPhone app can be set to wake the iMac, but what if the iMac is locked (as it usually is). Will that matter? If so, do I have to get up and unlock the computer every time i want to do anything? That would be a bit of a deal breaker. Thanks in advance for your help! Jason
  16. I was excited for 2.6 and I've been checking every other day for over 2 months since its announcement but it's seems like the update has gone off the boil. At first MQA decoding was coming, now probably not. Is there an ETA or rough timeframe for SonicOrbiter OS 2.6 release? Is there a definite answer on MQA decoding being included? Cheers Pete
  17. Hi there A friend has a iFi nano iOne and is just about to bid for an original release uRendu on eBay. I read in a review that "The Nano iONE is powered by any USB phone charger-type wall wart and a USB cable. Neither come supplied in the box. " In the chain I envisage, the uRendu will connect to the music stream over ethernet, convert it into a low noise USB stream that then feeds the iFi. Question is, does the iFi get its power supply from the uRendu (which in turn will be powered by iFi's wall wart power supply). Does this work, or are the two devices incompatible for this reason? I tend to think they should be compatible because others on this forum seem to use iFi DACs together with uRendu. But I would appreciate confirmation before my chum takes the next step. Thanks Nikko
  18. Looking for some help. I am unable to play DSD files thru Foobar2000 with my current set up. If you use a microrendu feeding a 2Qute, can you post your settings? Also looking for links to good Foobar2000 resources.
  19. I use my audio system mainly to listen to Tidal FLAC 1,441 kbps streams. My setup: A pair ofMartin Logan Aeon-i speakers, powered by a Krell KSA amplifier/Krell KSL-2 Preamp Combo. The Tidal stream from my router has a wired connection to a Sonore microRendu, which turn is connected to the USB input of a PS Audio NuWave DSD. The DSD is connected to the Krell preamp with a pair of balanced XLR cables. This system provides great undistorted audio with spacious staging of 2 channel classical music as it might sound in a Symphony Hall or Opera house with a seat in the center section. The reason for this post is to share the discovery that you do NOT need a PC with Logitech Media Server running or an account with Logitech’s Mysqueezebox. These items add unneccessary complexities to the task of streaming Tidal to your audio system. Instead simply install the LUMIN app on your iPad. It will serve as an elegant and intuitive “controller”, telling Tidal what albums/tracks you want to listen to. You can easily save your favorites in a playlist format. I hope this will help other audiophiles to enjoy their Tidal and microRendu Combo to the fullest? Claus
  20. I love the form factor of the microRendu, I play in office setup and its perfect to use behind the DAC (below/behind monitor) connected to the DAC with an UpTone A>B adapter, and power/ethernet connected in other end. However, its clock (oscillator) is not the best, it was designed before the accurate audio clocks where available (or very expensive). But nowadays, one of the best oscillator available is the Crystek CCHD-575 and it costs $12, and its pin-compatible with the old clock in the microRendu. So I decided to replace it, ordered a Crystek CCHD-575 24Mhz from mouser, here is the link: https://eu.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Crystek-Corporation/CCHD-575-25-24000?qs=W0yvOO0ixfGIP3iyv3ONBg== And since its temperature sensitive I also chased around town to get hold of some leaded tin (which in Europe is not allowed to be sold to private persons), because leaded tin has about 40 degrees lower melting temperature (around 180 Celsius). After some frustration, I got it working, but it was not easy. First of all, everything is very small on the microRendy PCB, and removing the old clock was hard (I ended up removing as much solder as possible and then used pliers + a little force 🙂 ). When soldering the new clock, I pre-tinned one pad and pressed down the clock while heating until it settled down, then soldered the 3 remaining connections normally but with very little solder, and a few minutes break between each soldering to let the clock cool down. But the result was better than I had anticipated, a completely new sound with more details, air and improved soundstage. So for anyone who feels a little daring, and are prepared that their microRendu might brick (which can easily happen), its a nice little tweak. Easily the best price/performance tweak I have made, but very risky. Btw, the 1.4 upgrade for microRendu, which isn't available anymore, is exactly what I described here: change clock to Crystek CCHD-575 I wonder if there are some voltage regulators in there that can be improved upon, or perhaps some caps 🙂

  22. Hi everyone. I tried to find an answer to my question searching the forums but could not. I have fallen behind my hobby in the last 4.5 years and computer audio has moved on considerably. The last time I shopped around and felt like up to date, there was no Roon and no Microrendu, no HQPlayer. It was mostly about Jriver, Jplay and AO. And definitely linear power supplies. I’m willing to upgrade what I have in hand and I’m very confused. I will very much appreciate if you can help. Please do not recommend me to do years of reading. Help if you can. Digital side of my setup: 1. Dual boot Single PC CAPS V3 Zuma (Intel i7-3770T / Intel DH77EB Micro ATX / SOtM tX-USBexp / SOTM Sata filter / Streacom F5 / 128gb SSD only for OS) 2. Powered by 3 rail Paul Hynes linear power supply (Motherboard, SOTM, SSD) 3. Dual boot: a. Jriver19 on WinServer2012R2 AO1.26 Core – strictly audio b. Jriver20 on Win10 – audio, video, family, ease of use… 4. Meitner MA-1 DAC 5. Synology NAS – where all audio(/video) files are Now the hard part, I would like to upgrade my hardware to venture into more resource intensive software like Dirac and/or HQPlayer. My idea is to upgrade the CPU, motherboard and memory cards and stick with the rest (case, ssd, sotm gear and the power supply). I really need video capability, that’s why I have the dual boot currently. Does this make sense? I already have a brand new CPU in hand, i7-7700T. Can you recommend me a motherboard? Preferably microATX to stick with the former CAPS v3 design? Or am I being foolish? This route will ignore the MicroRendu trend, right? Spending all that money for new mobo, memory etc I could very well get myself a MicroRendu. Am I sacrificing too much for that friendly video capable win10 boot for family? Is there a way to have best of both worlds? Your guidance will be most appreciated.
  23. I decided I was going to upgrade my Aurender N100H. I only had the N100H for three months, but loved it and knew I wanted more. I couldn't decide between the N10 or to go the microRendu route, which, from the posts, seemed very promising. I put the Aurender up for sale (figuring it would take a while to sell) and sprung for a microRendu + iFi iPower in order to test. I assumed the demand for the microRendu would be strong enough for me to sell it at only a small loss if I decided on the N10. My system is a Bricasti M1 DAC connected to the N100H and USB Regen with a Curious cable and adapter, an ATC CA2 preamp (a very good preamp and great bargain that is hard to get in the States. I needed to import it; it's the manufacturer's suggested match for the powered ATC speakers) and ATC SCM ASL 20 MK II powered studio monitors. In general, the ATC preamp speaker combo is highly accurate, very, very revealing, and perhaps a little cold. I'm using Harmonic Tech Pro Silway II for the connection from the DAC to the preamp, and Nordost Heimdall XLRs for the connection from preamp to powered speakers. I'm also using Audio Art power cords. (Rob Fritz was very helpful and is a really good guy, by the way.) My music library is both on the N100H and a Synology disk station running Minimserver. It took me a few months and a lot of trial and error (and expense in buying and selling cables and components at a loss) to make this a system I enjoyed. But I did. Then the microRendu came. I removed the USB Regen and N100H from the system and connected the microRendu. On first listen, it was clear that the microRendu is more open and considerably brighter than the N100H, and probably more musical. On the other hand, the N100H seemed to have more depth and gravitas. I've also noticed the N100H is sensitive to power cords, a good one makes a big difference. After repeated listening to a large number of recordings in varied genres, I noticed that the microRendu's brightness sometimes got in the way of the listening experience. There was a harshness to the vocals that I didn't hear with the Aurender and some upper midrange and harmonic distortion that I fought months to remove in setting up the system. However, the microRendu's sound might have been a function of the components. I do think the microRendu, in general, is a more musical listen, as vague as a term that is. Perhaps the best way to describe the difference between the two is that on casual listening the microRendu made it easier to tap my foot. But on critical listening, the gravitas and fullness of the Aurender enabled a deeper emotional connection. But one needs to consider that I am using the microRendu's least expensive recommended power supply. I am presuming that there will be a great improvement, including a reduction in the vocal harshness and distortion, and an increase in fullness and gravitas, as one goes up the PSU line. Whether it will exceed the Aurender I don't know, but I won't be surprised if it does. I think the hype around the microRendu is warranted. But it is probably amplified by the low initial price point. When one considers the investment in a top of the line PSU, Roon server, and Roon license in order to get a complete musical experience, including Tidal integration, the microRendu is probably the same price if not higher than the N100H, especially if one needs to invest in a NAS. The question of value comes from comparing the microRendu package to the N10. From a sound quality and music browsing perspective, the N100H and microRendu are probably much closer in price than one would initially think. I think one will need a really good PSU and to invest in a Roon server to get a similar experience from the microRendu as the N100H. (Although the investment in Roon, while expensive, is likely more fulfilling than the very, very good Aurender app.) In my opinion, the difference between the microRendu and the N100H is that the N100H is probably a lot more convenient out of the box. It will get you to audiophile sound quality and an engaging music control interface much more predictably and faster and easier than the microRendu. However, the microRendu has much more potential. After adding a great PSU, a Roon server and paying for a Roon license, the microRendu might be a little more expensive than the N100H but it is possible that it could be on par with or exceed the N10. If the latter turns out to be true, then it's a real bargain. I haven't made up my mind on which way I'll go. But I will be investing in that high-end PSU, once again ready to take a loss if disappointed. The possibility also exists that if the N100H doesn't sell I'll keep that too. Sometimes I fell as if I need a 12 step program.
  24. So, while I patiently awaited release of the Sonore microRendu, thankful for my spot in the initial queue, I followed all the news and pondered what power supply option made the most sense for me. I could afford the lowest cost iFi but longed for the higher performance of other options available at a cost over my budget. This led me to a friend who has been building his own audio gear for many years; everything from Pass First Watt DIY single ended amps to video & music DVR/servers. He is squarely camped with one foot in the DIY world and one in the audiophile world regularly participating in local audio club events so he gets regular opportunities to listen to many very high performing systems. I've always been impressed with his ability to combine solid proven engineering concepts and an open-minded but skeptical approach to many of the audio "traps" that many enthusiasts fall into. After begging, pleading, much food & drink, etc. I talked him into taking on the D-I-H "Do It Himself" project of building me a suitable LPS to use with my microRendu. So for the benefit of anybody considering a similar approach & to motivate the builders here, you can see a description and some pics below. (No, he isn't looking to build/sell these to others!) Sorry, I am no engineer, so might not be able to answer some of your technical questions about the circuit. Sonically, I am thrilled with the results. A significant upgrade from the adjustable Hosa wallwart that I had been using. At a cost of $185 in parts, plus a number of days of toil & sweat, I think we have the sonic equivalent of a much more expensive LPS and about as good as possible sound quality within my budget. It also needs to be repeated that the Sonore microRendu is a remarkable achievement and I can't recommend it more highly! Thanks for reading.
