  1. Digital-only label Oclassica offers classical music downloads in a lossless music format: FLAC file, 44100 Hz, 16-bit and 24-bit, stereo. At the moment selected albums are available for purchase in High Definition music format. You are welcome to check our store at www.oclassica.com Founded in 2010, Oclassica has been in the market of classical music just long enough to establish a good reputation and become a desired publisher name for young and experienced musicians, whose exceptional performance was not available to wider public since quite a few precious recordings had been neglected by bigger brands. Many outstanding artists were first presented to recording market by Oclassica.
  2. Euphony ─ a new embedded, headless OS for music servers. I saw Matrix Audio is working on a music server and it will be running an OS called Euphony. Then I found out a German company just released a server called the Zenion and it also is running Euphony. After a little research I found out Euphony is also sold pre-installed on an SSD drive for DIY builders. So I got one and put it in a little Intel NUC computer to try it out. It required no installation or configuration at all. I just booted the computer and then was able to access the interface with my phone. You have full control of everything using just a web browser from any computer or mobile device on your network. You can go to their site if you want to see all the features and options. The main thing I wanted to share was how surprised I was that it sounds so much better then my windows 10 computer and corresponding playback software(s). I can't explain why, but it absolutely sounds much better ─ at least to me it does. I can guess all day, but that does nobody any good. Hah. Some of it is likely due to having less background processes while the other obvious one would be less components (especially fans) between my two systems ─ a gaming PC and an intel NUC. Some aspects of the sound really stand out to me between playback from Euphony and Windows 10 (using ASIO in my playback software of choice). Right away, the background is more black. I wouldn't say that I had an issue with the noise floor before either as my system is dead silent without humm, buzz, or hiss. The spatial image is noticeably wider, deeper, and taller ─ covering all three of the X,Y, and Z axis ─ which is likely what/why I'm hearing instruments and sounds coming from the darkest depths of the abyss compared to windows which is reproducing a smaller spatial image to work with in direct comparison. Having more space to work with, I find it easier to hear microdetail that can easily be overlooked or missed in manic musical tracks. I don't have to actively listen for the details either as they're simply there even when I'm having a passive listening session whilst multitasking or kind of tired from a long day. I've done a lot of A/B testing and honestly can't go back to windows audio after having heard Euphony ─ at least not for listening to music. "What has been heard cannot be unheard." I've had Euphony on a NUC for a few months now and couldn't recommend it more. I've not tried any competing operating systems or music servers, so take that for what it is. Some other users may have more insight to provide than I can in the coming posts of this thread. Oh ─ before I forget ─ I did most of my A/B comparisons with a PS Audio Dectet Power Conditioner, AudioQuest NRG-X3 AC Power Cables, AudioQuest Carbon USB A─B Cable, Violectric DAC V850, Violectric HPA V280, Audeze LCD-4 (200 Ohm), and ZMF Eikon (Padauk). My source files were primarily redbook 16/44.1 lossless CD rips with a couple of exceptions ─ those being a 24/96 remastered albums and/or TIDAL HiFi streaming (which is now native in Euphony at this present time). 3. An apple AAC file contains my apple-ID, email address and other personally identifiable information or details in every purchased AAC file somewhere. If I convert a purchased AAC music file to Lossless file format does the new lossless format contain any of this personal information ? The reason I want to do this is the risk of my files getting stolen or copied is high in the environment I am currently in and I do not want this personal info to go with files if that happens. If a purchased AAC file is converted to MP3 format I assume the personal information is carried over to the MP3? Is that correct ? I understand that after I convert the files, the audio quality will be roughly the same and that I most certainly will not gain any audio quality.
  4. Looking at your “Everything you need to know about digital audio files,” I know that AIFF is uncompressed. I am still converting my CD collection to ALAC. I am about halfway through, so before I go start my many Prince CDs, I skipped about and did my five U2 albums. I found the “One” CD single, which has about 4 songs. Instead of ripping it, I just decided to keep it as is and copied the songs straight from the CD in AIFF format. I did this because in total the songs only came to about 325 MB in AIFF, and unless they re-release it, I won’t buy it again. Did I end up with the same file as if I ripped it into AIFF?
  5. Kirk, previously, I checked out the “The complete guide to using iTunes with lossless audio.” When I started reading your articles over five years ago. I experimented and ripped some CDs to Apple Lossless with a variety of apps. Sometime I would create a 320 version, or rip to lossless with these apps and also iTunes. I haven’t noticed that much difference between the various programs, but I “believe” that some louder. While I have stuck with XLD among those apps, I have been using iTunes almost exclusively for the last year. Is it better to rip to Apple Lossless using iTunes — I probably won’t use another OS in the foreseeable future — or should I use something else like XLD? I notice that XLD uses parts of the OS to do its processing. I usually see this as in the Info section’s encoder: X Lossless Decoder 20161007, QuickTime 7.7.3. Is ripping with other apps any better than what I could get from using just iTunes? It seems like 12.5 is up to the task. And I want to rip all discs, eventually, to Apple Lossless.
  6. Edit: I think my original post was too long so will try simpler shorter question Hi all, I am wondering if streaming Tidal through Chromecast Audio will pass through an unaltered signal to a DAC through TOSLINK. Chromecast specs state support for hi res streams at 24bit/96khz and Tidal page states MQA streaming at 24bit/96khz so on the surface this seems like an adequate way to get tidal Hifi to my stereo, or am I missing something?
  7. I'm sure a few of you have already read over it, an I'm sure each side has their rebuddles ready. An maybe I'll burn at the stake for even posting/suggesting it But all things aside, I've you've not read over this it's a nice article to explore. Also, since I'm bringing it up, what papers or studies have been conducted that contradict the findings of this one? It would be nice to have a larger pool of data to read over on this subject than just a single paper. Also another question I have, assuming all things equal can or do hardware manufacturers prioritize or optimize firmware/hardware to provide a better quality of sound with one file format over the other? Is there gear designed to sound BETTER with DSD than PCM and vice versa? An for the record I don't listen to either... still in RedBook land my self with the occasional 24Bit Vinyl Rip from trusted friends...

  9. I'm a seventeen-year-old musical escapist, audiophile and aspiring music journalist. I've just set up a blog site (after much time being 'put on the back burner'), which I wanted to feature highly-stylised, compiled podcasts... Basically, I was wondering what programme do you use to upload compiled audio files/data in their lossless format, without compromising on optimal quality? I want to be able to make a radio-style podcast where I can play several audio files in their lossless format. I want to then upload and share this file on Soundcloud or some other audio sharing website, where each track can be listened to in its original, uncompressed glory. Secondary to that, I'd like to know of any programme that I can fade music in and out, and speak over tracks, etc... Just like a traditional radio format I guess, without the cost. I have a Any info/advice would be really appreciated!
  10. I have 5000 Lossless iTunes on an External Drive. I have a Mac Mini. I want a second backup in case this drive is damaged or dies. Uploading Lossless to the cloud is not practical. I want to copy the files from the existing External Drive to a second External Drive. Or, from the External Drive to DVD disks. iTunes used to have that but they got rid of it. My computing skills are not advanced and I will not understand highly technical or complicated responses. Is it possible to revert back to an older version of iTunes that has the copy to disk ability?
  11. I've been listening to quite a selection of Apple's new spatial audio music and it all sounds great on my speaker system. I imagine it sounds even better on headphones. This could become really popular.
  12. New user here. Is there a way to scan a music library of lossless files (all in the same format) and normalize them to a standard volume level so they play back without variations in volume/levels? Can this be done by the player or is there software that will analyze each track/file and change its levels and save them? Is there software that will do this when files are converted from one format to another? I'm using OS X but I also have Windows via Parallels. I can go for a solution on either platform. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Wayne
  13. Hey guys, I'm new here and to the audiophile scene so I have some questions. There's just so much information out there and I'm just having a hard time navigating it all to find the answer I'm looking for. I recently purchased some M-Audio BX8 Studio Monitors and along with it a Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface, which hooks up to the monitors and converts my digital music to analog (right?) I play all of my music from my laptop but that requires a usb connection from my audio interface to my computer. My question is: is it possible to buy some sort of wireless device to plug into my audio interface so that I can stream lossless music wirelessly from my computer to the device through my audio interface to my speakers? For example, I've been Googling and stumbled onto these: Aperion Audio's Wireless, Lossless Music System - "HAL" One, for these I would need a female usb connector to connect it to my audio interface, which it apparently doesn't have and two, it seems excessive to have something plugged into your computer AND audio interface to stream lossless music. Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it! Andres
  14. Hi, I have some questions. I apologize if this has already been addressed and also I'm sorry for all of the info but I want to be thorough. Objective: Rip CD collection in highest quality possible to lossless format (as yet undefined). Factors: ~ I'm on a Mac and from what I've read XLD is the best option for accurate rips. ~ I want to be able to tag my files with Artist, Track name, etc. and want compatibility with iTunes without plugins or workarounds, so FLAC is not an option for me. ~ My music is mostly electronic and hip hop (not sure if this makes a difference when choosing the lossless format or conversion settings). ~ Larger file size is not a concern for me. Quality is. HD space is cheap. ~ Many of my CDs are mixed, i.e. gapless. Purpose: ~ To have the highest quality digital backup possible. Many of my CDs are rare or irreplaceable promos. A few are also older and have begun to degrade. I want to convert everything now in the best quality I can so that I can save my music indefinitely. ~ After the CDs degrade more I need another source as close as possible to the original. Therefore I want to have lossless files that I can listen to or use whenever I need to create a lossy (MP3) version for my iPhone. Questions: ~ When trying to convert some CDs in iTunes, some tracks were not converted at all because the CDs were degraded (no scratches, just old). I am hoping XLD can use error correction to "fix" these issues. Does XLD do this kind of correction? ~ I have heard ALAC may not be a good choice because of a theoretical "jitter" issue which compromises quality. Is this true? ~ Assuming AIFF is the best choice based on the factors above, what would be the best settings? I see a lot of tutorials for FLAC conversion but not for AIFF. When I checked the Wiki page comparing lossless formats I also did not see any AIFF reference there. ~ XLD has an option that says somethign about C2 error pointers (if your dirve supports this). How do I know if my drive supports this? ~ If you rip a gapless CD to multiple lossless tracks and then later convert those lossless files to mp3, can you join the tracks as one file when converting to mp3 so that you can remove the gaps? I've had problems playing gapless albums as multiple tracks in mp3 format on my iphone. Thanks!
  15. I am looking to use higher quality ripped format rather than standard MP3 or WMA and would appreciate help on the following questions: 1. Does Apple have a lossless music file solution? 2. Does Apple have audiophile-oriented products to manage or play lossless music files? 3. How does Apple compare to other lossless compressions like WMA or FLAC? 4. Does anyone else have a lossless music file solution? 5. Does anyone else have audiophile-oriented products to manage or play lossless music files? 6. Ballpark, how much larger than our MP3 files would a lossless music file be? 7. Would it be easy to down-convert from a lossless file format to MP3 for lower quality use on iPods? Thanks for the help.
  16. Hello, I'm looking for an internal PC drive in order to rip Music lossless files from CD's. Objective is to rip AIFF or WAV files with the highest possible quality, I'm using Dbpoweramp software. I remember times ago Pioneer & Plextor were the best drives but might not be the case today ? Thank you for your feedback Rgds
  17. Hello! This is my first post on an audiophile site, so please bear with me if I've posted this in the wrong place or some other mistake. I use my phone for listening to music, since it's the most convenient solution. As revealed in the thread title, it's a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. ( yes, my phone is old ) I have recently purchased two albums in Apple's lossless format on iTunes, which is the .m4a extension. The problem is that my phone refuses to read the metadata from the files. In iTunes, I can view the artist, genre, album cover, etc., but when I port the songs over to my phone, it shows that there's no data in the songs, and all of them are made by "Unknown" in the album "Unknown", with some beautiful eighth note cover art. The files play perfectly and losslessly (not a word), but I can't look up any of my songs by anything other than the title. And sure, I can convert them all to mp3 to get the metadata that I want, but... lossless to mp3. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Plus, the album art from the original gets painfully compressed into a disgusting, pixelated mess. I know that I could just download a third-party app to play the m4a's with no problem, but for convenience, I'd like to be able to play the songs natively with all of the artist, album, whatever data is in the song, completely intact. Please Samsung, I just want to listen to my Reol songs in peace why can't you just give me this I paid $20 for these songs argh ugh asdfghjkl; Anyway, I'm sure that, after my disorganized rant, you all have more than enough details to try and help me out. Also, sorry if this was posted a bit late at night. I'm a bit of a night owl :^)
  18. I've just discovered that CD Baby has made all their downloadable albums available in lossless (44.1/16 flac). This is really great news for me. They have an extensive catalog containing lots of the obscure stuff I like. I'm sure I'll be dropping lots of money there. I purchases 3 albums yesterday, only to find the flac downloads were not immediately available. It seems they must rip the CDs as they became requested. They worked this morning. A little bit of a let down, but cool nonetheless. I hope this becomes less of a problem as more cds get transcoded.
  19. I am currently listening to music at home using this set-up: My iTunes library ( Win 7 64bit ) of 758 CDs converted to Apple Lossless music files is in my home office, and it is routed/connected to an Apple TV 3 in the living room through an Ethernet cable. The Apple TV 3 is connected to a DAC Moon 100D through an optical cable The DAC is connected to an integrated amplifier Cambridge Audio Azur 815A which outputs the analogical sound to the speakers. I want to have best possible sound quality, but as far as I understand I have some limitations on this set-up: 1) Apple TV outputs everything at 16 bit/48 kHz (not bit perfect and not 'CD quality' 16 bit/ 44.1 kHz). So, even if I have higher quality music files being served from iTunes, it will be down sampled to 16 bit/48 kHz. 2) ITunes does NOT support 24bit recording and all Apple Lossless music files are automatically converted back to 16-Bit by iTunes So here are my questions: Can I play 24bit music files using iTunes directly from the PC to the DAC ( NOT using Apple TV) ? If yes, which formats? Any suggestions to improve my set-up output quality? Thanks in advance.
