  1. Why are there debates if "bits are bits"? Can you hear a difference in streaming audio software? Bits are Bits! Foobar2000 was lighter on its feet, more accurate tone/timbre, quieter, and had better timing of decays. There are a delicacy and precision about its sound. JRiver had a “fatter” sound with more bleeding edges and smeared textures. It sounded flatter (by a good margin) and more veiled in a thicker, unnatural warmth.
  2. Just wondering if anybody out there has the new JCAT Xact S1 server/streamer?? I have had one for a under 1 month and it is quite impressive IMHO. It combines all the knowledge marcin_jps has learned in the decades of time he has spent working in the digital playback field. JCAT components help optimize DIY or custom servers all over the world now. This is a new place or category in digital playback field. This component is as important as the MOST expensive DACs out there. I am just a client and have no other affiliation to JCAT or Marcin. I am giving my opinion because I feel the Xact S1 is an exceptional game changing product. I would like to hear about others who have or are about to have the JCAT Xact S1 in their system. Thanks for reading. Celebrat
  3. I posted orginally in music storage. This is the proper category. Just wondering if anybody out there has the new JCAT Xact S1 server/streamer?? 4. Hello everybody, in the last few days I have installed on a separate partition of my (single) PC a dedicated configuration of audio playback only. Now I have a "General Purpose" partition, where I have Windows 10 Pro, Fidelizer Pro, JPLAYStreamer via minimserver, and an "Audiophile" partition with Windows Server 2016 GUI, Audiophile Optimizer, Fidelizer Pro, Process Lasso, JPLAYStreamer / minimserver, a few more tweaks derived from the CAD optimization scripts for bringing the number of processes at a reasonably low level (around 28, with network services active). Also, Audio configuration runs with shell replacement to Fidelizer Pro, again aiming to resemble a core installation. The downstream components are an Audio GD NOS11 V2 DAC/Amp (connected through USB, with an iFi iPurifier 2) and a Sennheiser HD 800S headphone, via balanced cable. When comparing the General Purpose set-up sound and the Audiophile set-up sound, the Audio set up is clearly an overall winner. I am not sure how to split the improvement because I installed W2016, AO and PL (i.e. what makes most of difference between the two setups) in a single shot. Where the Audiophile set-up easily wins is with resolution, transparency, soundstage layering and focus. Also, a general sense of less noise / more air around the instruments provide the feeling that the sound is coming out of nowhere, as opposed to the slightly veiled feeling I get from the General Purpose set-up. So overall I am satisfied, ... but ... Where I still think there are margins of improvement is at both ends of the frequency spectrum. The high frequency with the Audiophile configuration can be ear-piercing, while maintaining a very fine grain, while the bottom and feels much more satisfying, significantly fuller and more extended with the General Purpose setup. So far I have tried various settings of Audiophile Optimizer sound signature and digital filtering, ending up with the 4-D combination which to my ears is the smoothest one (but yet not smooth enough to my taste, especially for long listening sessions). Anybody else had a similar experience after upgrading their system? What have you tried / would you try to further improve? Thank you, Simone
  5. Hi everyone, I am a newbie in CA. I am using HQPlayer playing music via JPLAY driver. I would like to ask if it is possible for JPLAY to play DSD file feeding non-DSD DAC.
  6. Hi, I am looking into setting up dual pc playback and ability to play spotify is important for me also. Is there a way to setup e.g. Fidelity with Jplay? In my case Fidelity keeps crashing when trying playback over Jplay. Anybody able to setup anything similar? Thanks, Peter
  7. I've been streaming audio for about four years now. Until recently I was using a variation on a C.A.S.H. server running Windows 7 and various versions of JRiver. That computer died and was replaced with an Intel NUC i3. running Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit. I'm looking for advice on using the various OS modifying software. What works best? In the two computer mode do both computers have to be dedicated to the audio system or can the control computer be any other machine on the network? Does OA improve the sound even after JPLAY is installed? Are there other software packages to consider. Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Beowulf
  8. I don't know how to set it. Could anyone know how to set it? Thanks
  9. A plea to the community: Would someone out there with access to some lab-grade test gear and a true reference DAC perform a legitimate head-to-head among JPlay and the other music players? I will admit that I am a JPlay believer (please don't hate). And I am bothered that there seems to be no measurable proof of its effectiveness. (And please spare me the speech about how something does not need to be measurable to be significant.) I have read some very thoughtful and clever experiments posted online that ultimately cannot demonstrate a measurable difference between, for instance, JPlay and JRiver. But I am left unconvinced because the test gear itself always seems inadequate. The last one I read was a very well-designed experiment with a write up from a guy who was obviously very smart, but the measurements were captured using a PC sound card with a specified -89dB noise floor on its ADC. Don't get me wrong, I realize this is a pretty tall order. Assuming a difference does actually exist, I would expect capturing that difference would require a system with incredible resolution and repeatability. But I have read online reviews from individual contributors that featured extremely expensive gear from Audio Precision, Rohde & Schwarz... my assumption is they had access to these assets at work (which is awesome). So, would someone with one of these $100k analyzers sitting around the office sneak a reference DAC into their lab and perform a rigorous after-hours experiment just to satisfy the curiosity of the audio community? If your boss catches you, you are welcome to throw "a2x024" under the bus...
  10. Since my old Rega CD Player died, I decided to switch off CD rom and move to software. I did this step in the past for the video\movies, now it is time for the music. I listen almost to classic music and expecially chamber music. I tried several solutions and still not found the best one, for example: - Windows desktop + JRiver - Windows touch + JRiver - Windows + Foobar - JPlay in different environment - Linux + MPD - etc.... Every solution tried anyway is based on a NAS storing music files and a USB DAC. I must admit that I wish "something" that does not force me to use kayboard and mouse to listen to music. I must admit that Jriver running on a Windows tiouchscreen tablet in theatre view is LOVELY. Ubuntu Linux + MPD is a good idea, but is not so flexible like JRiver and so on... Both MPD and JRiver, correctly configured and tuned, are very nice but... from your experience, are there real advanteges running Ubuntu+MPD over Win+Jriver and\or Foobar , from a sound quality point of view ? Regards.
  11. In this thread I describe “VerseTransoprt”, a Windows 8.1based DIY Music Server. This is a personal computer that is specifically built to be a music server that can co-exist on the equipment rack in the listening room. It aims to become a reference quality music server for playback of high-resolution and redbook digital music files based on the following requirements: 1. Silent, low heat, no vibrarion 2. Capable of “audiophile” sound 3. Easy to operate remotely (power on/off, music selection, music playback-next / previous / pause / resume / stop) 4. Easy to assemble and install 5. Size and look compatible to the rest hi-fi components on the rack 6. Capable to install a PCIe “audiophile’ class USB card for linking with the DAC 7. Motherboard, CPU, and SATA disks powered by an external linear power supply 8. Play 16, 24 bit /44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192 kHz bitperfect 9. Capable to tweak BIOS and OS for optimal music playback In the attached PDF document I provide extensive information regarding the s/w installation and all the relevant Windows 8.1 tweaks. After applying all the custom tweaks and the relevant JPLAY audio process priority, CPU affinity and hibernation, the music server is almost exclusively dedicated to music playback, esuring minimum latency and jitter. VerseTransport - Computer Based Music Transport - SW Installation Guide.pdf The aim is that the music server not only allows everyone to explore her/his music collection in new ways, bit it also has the potential of delivering better sound than the sound available from CDs i.e. music read from the hard-disk drive potentially sounds better than when read from an optical disc. 12. Hi all, I've recently acquired a very nice vinyl setup and haven't been using my digital gear at all. I'm downsizing to a Hifi-Berry and am selling all my current digital gear. To start with, I am ONLY offering the AudioPC and HDPlex unit as a package deal (but very fairly priced, IMO). See below for specifics. Pic of each component in my room: HDPlex LPSU + HDPlex PC PSU + AudioPC price = $650 plus shipping. US customers only at this point please. Audio PC Specs CPU: Ivy i5 3570K Mainboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 RAM: 16 Gb DDR3 System SSD: 128G Music SSD: Samsung EVO 850 500Gb Sound card: Pink Faun RJ45 I2S (optional) Case: Silverstone GD09B PSU: HDPlex 250W DC-DC ATX Installed software: Server 2012R2, fully activated (will provide license key to buyer) Audiophile Optimizer JPlay JRiver MC20 RoonServer (will need to provide new account info) REW I do not intend to format the system drive. I will tape down the HSF (stock intel unit, it's quiet) and remove the HDPlex PSU for shipping, to be shipped in a separate box. The Pink Faun card is extra, and is really only useful for someone with an Aqua DAC. It could be re-pinned by Jord at PF to another maker’s i2S input though, for a reduced cost vs buying a whole new card. This is a $150 addition to the price of the PC + HDPlex combo ($500 retail) Administrator password changed to “administrator” No other accounts are active on the machine. HDPlex main unit is the 300W LPSU unit driving the 12V side of the PF card and the 19V input of the ATX 250W DC-DC supply in the PC. This setup is dead quiet, electrically and sonically and produces a very open, airy, and neutral sound. It pairs incredibly well with the DAC I'm selling (I would consider a combo deal for all of it to the same buyer). Aqua La Voce S2 DAC with factory XLR upgrade - $2150 shipped to anyone in the lower 48. International shipping available on this, but I will need to get a quote and work with the buyer on fair pricing. This is also listed on Audiogon under my handle "toddrhodes" if you'd like more detail on it. This is a lesser-known DAC but is absolutely worth consideration if you have the budget for it. It's sound is best characterized as "pure." It is faithful to the recording, it is an R2R/Ladder DAC, non-upsampling. It features 4 digital inputs: Galvanically isolated USB 3.0, AES/EBU, SPDIF via 75 ohm BNC and the proprietary Aqua I2S input (to match the sound card I have in my Audio PC). This is a very good digital frontend, make no mistake. My selling is merely a matter of having a current preference for vinyl and all that it entails. Personally, vinyl is a different sound which I prefer, but I would never call it "better" as that is different for all of us. Feel free to PM with any questions. Not taking offers at this point, I feel my prices are extremely fair given the condition and performance of these components. Thank you. Todd
