  1. [EDIT: The original first post of this long thread had outdated information and so is deleted.] Development of EtherREGEN is complete. The web page for it is up (UpTone Audio EtherREGEN), and a new thread for the launch has been started. Please see:
  2. 3. I've been powering my micro Rendu for the past year off the adjustable 9V tap (set to 7.5V) on an HDPlex LPS power supply. I see in window shopping that Sonore recommends 7V for both micro and ultra Rendu so I'm feeling pretty good about buying a better (quieter?) power supply that I can use for now with the micro and later make the upgrade to the ultra Rendu. Has anyone compared the different flavors of power supply, if so for under $1K what are your thoughts, advice? Looking for comparisons please, not owner loyalty statements.
  4. Like many others, my network has grown up over time. Starting with Dial-up on to DSL modems hooked to a single computer or a small wired network and many different networking methods that sort of worked. Today my network is on Comcast cable using my modem with three Netgear Orbi devices on wired backhaul. There is a 24 Port TP link switch in the basement network shelf and an eight-Port switch in the family room for all the TV gear, and a temporary eight-port switch in the office. There is a point-to-point wireless network link to my in-law's house to provide them with internet access. On an average day, there are 55 devices on my network. The wired part of the network is solid with no issues, well none that I usually see. The Orbi gear works great, and now that their wired backhaul is in place I have the same WiFi configuration between the two houses. All is well until tomorrow. If the nice FedEx folks do not freeze my TLS audio switch will arrive. I do not think my network is ready for it. I do not know where I will place it. Near the Server? Near the "best" endpoint? Time will tell if my ears can hear the difference. But; Wait! There is more. As soon as I can get my hands on the UpTone Audio EtherRegen, I will want to test that. I now have a dilemma. It is time to "tear down that wall" and redesign the network systems. I have evolving ideas in my head. Design #1 Tear it all down and build up with Ubiquiti UniFi. Design #2 Keep the core Netgear Orbi Mesh system and leverage that. Design #3 Isolate the audio system network and leave the rest alone. I always like to start a project like this with some requirements. These are pretty high level to allow the most flexibility. Provide Internet Access for two related families. Implement seamless WiFi so that devices can roam between the two homes. Ensure that multiple concurrent audio and video streaming services work well. Provide for "isolation" for the Audiophile network. The network is flat between the two homes. Should we change that somehow? VLAN? Should we eliminate the wireless backhaul between houses and replace it with fiber? (less than 100ft run) Support PC gaming on one computer Decide about VLAN support and isolation of some devices for security. (IOT, Amazon Echo, others) Develop a support document so others can manage the network. (Unifi would help this a lot) Add optical networking for in the design now or for future planning Audio Subsystem The audio system that I want to isolate consists of three or four sub-systems as follows. 1. LR sit down music system: NUC/AL to YGGY/AYRE 2. Office desk system: UltraRendu to LYR3 Multibit 3. Server backend: Roon on a Sonic Transporter (10TB internal storage) 4. Possible need for NAS on this nework depending upon the server. NOTE: The iPad, etc. controlling Roon will not be isolated. I will want to stream to other devices on network outside of the isolated group. I will be tinkering over the next little bit. 1. TLS Switch configurations 2. Wireless on the NUC/AL 3. Fiber to the NUC/AL ( will need an FMC) The next phase may involve the following a. EtherRegen b. OpticalRendu The network re-design may be next. The server portion of the audio system comes after that. I am very open to other thoughts on my intentions! Bob
  5. WHAT IS THE TRUE EXPERIMENTAL TWEAK THREAD ALL ABOUT? I have always wanted a thread where any subject is possible. No experiment is too crazy to add here. No idea is too bold to reveal. Take it away! Enlight your thoughts and share your ideas how to improve SQ and how not to. Anyone can encurage and educate you but no one should let you down, deminage you or simply move you to another thread. Everyone is welcome as long as they accepts a different way of thinking! TOPIC DIGEST With a little help of @austinpop I have realised that this thread is all over the place. Even if this is one of the fundamental ideas behind this thread, it could be a good idea to sum-up the things that have proven to be beneficial to SQ in this thread. I will keep it plain & simple. Remember that these are essentially my own findings in my own setup with Tidal FLAC and Tidal MQA as source. As always YMMV! LAN 1. Cat 6a U/UTP 500Mhz ethernet cables sounds better than Cat5, Cat5E, Cat6 & Cat7+ in my setup. Ghent Audio Cat 6a ET02 with JSSG shielding and Metz plugs rules them all. 2. Network switch improve SQ with input on port 1 and output on the last port. Possible explanation is QoS and also that the ports are in different magnetic boxes inside the switch. 3. Using a AQVOX switch with better clock improves SQ compared to a D-Link DSG-105 network switch. 4. A wireless adapter/wireless bridge/router in client mode into a network switch sounds better than battery powered FMCs and hardwired LAN. 5. Router vastly improves SQ with a floating LPS and even more if the floating PSU is connected to a DC blocker trap filter. IME a router upgrade could be beneficial to SQ. 6. Galvanic isolation/DC blocker in the signal path pre the router improves SQ. 7. Wireless adapter vastly improves connected to a floating IT. 8. RJ45 socket enhancers seems to be more efficient on port 4 & 5. Don't ask me why! GND 1. Grounding a metal chassi network switch to a tourmaline grounding box greatly improves SQ. 2. Different tourmaline grounding boxes improves the sound signature in different ways. 3. Grounding the DC negative terminal of the floating SMPS works great. In my setup it sounds best connected to a grounding box instead of to the power strip safety ground receptacle. Just be aware of possible leakage loops between various network devices. A big thanks @JohnSwenson for this tip. USB 1. Covering the outer USB barrels with electrical tape improves SQ slightly with unshielded USB cables. Capasitive coupling between metal barrel and pins? 2. Uptone Audio´s USPCB improves SQ. 3. ATL Hi-Fi´s 8 conductor USB cable with dual unconnected shields (5v+GND & Data- & Data+) with JSSG loop improved SQ compared to other longer (<50cm) USB cables that I´ve tried. DC 1. Network switch sounds best with dual floating PSUs or battery power (but very important to disconnect the battery charger while listening to music). Dual floating PSU is slightly better than battery power, but battery power is slightly better than single floating PSU. 2. Powering several devices with a single floating SMPS sounds better than powering the very same devices with several battery supplies. Also, powering several devices with a single battery supply sounds better than using multiple identical battery supplies. Self-inflicted noise? 3. Canare 4S6 starquad does improve SQ where ever applied. Canare 4S6 with JSSG seems to be even more effective. Thanks to@JohnSwenson! 4. Grounding the DC negative output of a floating SMPS improves SQ. Grounding the chassi/case decrease SQ. Be aware of shared ground paths since this could potensially decrease SQ. 5. Dual LT3045 ultra-low noise voltage regulators in series with 1v drop-down close to the powered device improves SQ quite dramaticly. 6. Kemet aluminium Polymer caps A750 series (25v 560uF) vastly improves LT3045 when added at the DC output. On single LT3045 the Kemet improves on both in- and output. 7. Panasonic FC series type A aluminium electrolytic caps improves on the PSU output terminals. AC 1. A DC blocker trap filter pre a safety isolation transformer improves SQ even though it is dead silent (no hum). DC blockers trap filter pre a floating PSU into a router vastly improves SQ. DC stress reliever? 2. SQ improves when battery chargers is connected to a separate powerstrip connected directly to the AC wall outlet, bypassing the isolation transformer completely. 3. A safety isolation transformer with floating secondary improves SQ more than a Ultra Isolation transformer. A balanced isolation transformer with floating center-tap rules them all! 4. Daisy chained floating grounds (dual floating grounds) sounds better than a single floating ground. In my setup floating SMPS's improve SQ connected to a floating IT, even surpassing battery supplies. Thanks for the suggestion @lmitche! 5. AC mains starquad power cables greatly improves SQ. 6. AC mains voltage regulators improves SQ on the signal chain. Even cheaper versions are effective. Not as effective on high power devices such as active speakers and amp due to a still unknown reason.
  6. It took me months to discover the cause of network instability which was making my AVR unusable. Members of this group tried to help, and those of another forum too. Finally, Marantz told me to move my router away from my TV box, even though it was the AVR which appeared to have the problem. With several metres between the router and both the TV box and the AVR, all was sweetness and light. From a network which fell over every day and took the AVR's network settings down with it to a perfectly behaved system. I'm sharing this because I haven't seen anything written on this, so if you're having a stability problem, here's a possible cause. Louise
  7. I'm in the process of building a new server and I would like to have it galvanically isolated from the router (although the ethernet specification implies non-galvanic coupling, the "gremlins" I've experienced with this kind of connection seem to show that some noise is making its way into the PC). I had in mind something like: ethernet cable >> rj45 to SFP converter >> sfp cable >> sfp pcie net card Do you have suggestions regarding both the fore mentioned chain configuration and/or recommentations regarding the components/cabling I should use? would the startech card be ok? Regarding the SFP, is there any vantage regarding the SC? Thanks!
  8. Although I study widely, my living in New Zealand, ironically, isolates what Hi-Fi products I can buy from local dealers. And from studying Marantz, I'm reminded today (while referring to the video below in trying to answer another Thread) of their Mr « Quality Control » Ryuichi Sawada recommending anti-vibration WellFloat : :[video=youtube;C9st-sqxgz4] And I find that 6moons has « syndicated Polish article » of C.E.C. ASB3545WF rebadge : Thus, in Singapore for example, I see Musiclink AV is selling original G-Clef...Well, search for yourself if you're interested
  9. View Classified FOR SALE: HDPLEX 500W ATX Linear Power Supply w/ SR Orange Fuze + Isoacoustics Giai III Upgrades FOR SALE: HDPlex 500w ATX Linear Power Supply. https://hdplex.com/hdplex-fanless-500w-atx-linear-power-supply-with-modular-atx-output.html . These are very hard to find and have been sold out for months. I originally purchased this unit in March 2021 (arrived in late April) to power a music server build, but due to supply chain issues I haven’t been able to put everything together. As a result it is in completely unused mint condition. It has been sitting in the box nearly the entire time. Besides the power supply, I’ve upgraded the fuse to Synergistic Research Orange, and added isolation with Isoacoustics Gaia III feet (which required thread adapters which I ordered separately). All factory parts and cables are also included, as well as the ATX bridge modular input board. If you’d like, I can also include an adapter cable which will allow the pcie from the psu to power the secondary 4 or 8-pin CPU EPS on the motherboard. I’ve decided to go in another direction for a server and will not be needing the psu anymore. I was excited to use it, especially with the upgrades, so it’s a bit disappointing to see it go. Hopefully I can pass it along to someone who’s been looking for one of these, as again, they’re very hard to find. I’d like to sell everything as a package, but will consider leaving out the Gaia feet and lowering the price. But, in my opinion, linear power supplies definitely benefit from isolation, and these are some of the best on the market. I’m an avid reader of this forum but don’t tend to post, so you can also check out this ad on US Audio Mart where I have an established record and 100% positive feedback. My username is Jazzebration. 10. Topaz 5kVA line noise ultra-isolation transformer model 91005-31. The ultimate isolation transformer. Far superior to any power conditioner or 'audiophile' isolation transformers like Equi=Tech or Torus Power. 146dB line common mode noise suppression (for reference, Torus Power has only only 80dB CMNR). Is about as good as power being regenerated for pure clean AC power. Also will reduce a 6000 volt AC line spike to 6 milli-volts! A great protection, if you have had lightning strike problems in your area. A forum discussion on the Topaz transformers: Lightly used, in excellent working condition. This is the largest transformer Topaz makes for single phase operation, with plenty of current to power large high end amplifiers, or high power equipment. The primary and secondary are wound completely separate windings from each other, spaced apart, and individually shielded, so there's no noise coupling between the primary and secondary. The primary to secondary capacitance is only 0.005 Pico-farads !! No standard isolation transformer has this good of noise isolation, such as the Topaz transformers. The primary and secondary windings are dual 120 volts, so they can be wired for either 120v or 240 volts (input and output). This type of high power transformer should have the electrical work performed by an experienced electrician! Do keep in mind, that this transformer has large iron, and large transformers do have a little hum, when they are on, so placement outside your living/listening environment would be recommended. Normally, the transformer would be located near your electrical panel, and the power output from the transformer wired to the location of your equipment, or audio amplifiers. The transformer itself weighs 50kg, plus the weight of the shipping pallet = 70kg. This large 5000VA Topaz transformer does not come up for sale often, and is far superior to any hi-end line conditioner, because of the completely separated primary and secondary windings. This transformer is used, removed from a working environment, in perfect working condition. If shipping is required, it will be placed on a pallet and shipped via insured freight for safe arrival. All enquires welcome and will be answered in full. Palletized shipping within the EU ~ 100 EUR by DB Schenker with full insurance. No VAT or duties for EU countries. 800 EUR + shipping (I have paid $499 for the transformer, over $400 for shipping to the EU and close to $200 in import taxes, so over $1100 / 900 EUR in total; selling only 'cos I just bought the 7.5kVA model).
