I posed this question to a salesperson at an Apple Store and to a salesperson at an independent Apple dealer. Neither had any idea what I was talking about. So, I thought I would check with the real experts. I just bought my first Mac, a Mini. I have had an iPhone and an iPad for a while so I sort of understand the Apple operating system. My goal, based on what I have read here as possible, is to run my Mini "headless", that is without a monitor, keyboard or mouse, for running Spotify, Roon, JRiver, maybe even iTunes. I want to do all of the controlling on my iPad but have the Mini do the work of processing the stream and sending it to the analog components. I understand that I need to have the usual keyboard and mouse available for system maintenance, etc. The Mac Mini will plug into my Marantz AV8801 via HDMI. D/A will occur on the AV8801. So, on my Mini, under System, there is a place with a bunch of options, called Sharing. Looking at the options, it seems I am in the right place to configure my system. But being very new to Macs, I don't really understand all of the options. May I ask the help of the Mac computer audiophiles that frequent this forum? Thanks in advance. Tim

Hello, I'm in the process of optimising my MacMini to serve as my sole audio source to the rest of my system. I've been reading here two contradictory approaches: 1. Run as few apps as possible. If possible only your player (A+ in my case). Everything interferes with the SQ. vs 2. Use something like Splashtop to control the MacMini remotely and get rid of display, mouse and keyboard. Since Splashtop (or whatever) has to transfer everything happening in the MacMini screen to the remote client, I'd say it must do quite a lot of screen scrapping, even when you're not interacting with it. Has anyone found that a headless MacMini (running the inevitable screen scrapping server) sounds worse than a MacMini with display and bluetooth mouse and keyboard? Cheers, Nuno

Hello, I just ordered a Mac Mini (a refurbished new one) which I am going to use as a 'Headless' Mac Mini.My plan is to use it exclusively for music and store my music collection on an external Firewire drive. So my setup will be: FireWire Hard Drive (store the music) -> MacMini -> Audirvana + -> USB to Musical Fidelity V-LINK 192 -> Coaxial Cable to PS Audio Digital Link III -> Analog Out to my Onkyo Receiver Any last minute tips from this most excellent forum group? My main concerns at this point are: 1) Getting my iTunes library from my MacBook Pro to the External Firewire Drive. I want to make sure I keep all the iTunes information (Play Count, Ratings, Playlists, etc.). Do I need any special software or is it as simply as copying and pasting to the hard drive? Does that degrade the music in any way? 2) Looking for advice on the type of external Firewire drive to get. I selected Firewire since my music will be sent to my bridge/DAC with a UBS connection and my understanding is it's beneficial to use different ports in this setup. Any other advice, tips, etc. for running the Headless Mac Mini would be so very appreciated. Thanks!

Hello - I am likely going to buy the new Mac Mini (assuming they're announcing it next week) and use it as my music server. It would be connected to my PS Audio Digital Link III DAC (either through USB or Digital out...whichever turns out to be better). I see that some folks here have a similar setup but they also use a separate hard drive which (presumably) stores all the music files. I was wondering why having a separate hard drive in this setup was beneficial? Let's assume the Mac Mini will be used strictly as a music server...no web, movies, etc. Is it strictly capacity (hard drive) related? I think the current Mac Mini's top out at either 500 or 750 GB. Or ar there other reasons? I'd rather not drop another 100-200 on a separate hard drive if I can avoid it. Just curious as to the rationale. I currently have all my music on my MacBook Pro, but it's a pain using a wired connection to my DAC and would like a device that stores my music without a long wire as I surf the web. Feel free to drop random suggestions on my setup as well Thanks!!
