  1. Allo Digione What is it? It is a transport for RaspberryPi 3 with Coax/BNC out. If your dac supports this input, read on. There are two flavours: One is a PI-hat https://allo.com/sparky/digione.html Another one a complete streamer/player assembled: https://allo.com/sparky/digione-player.html Darko's review: http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/2017/08/allos-digione-pulls-five-star-sound-quality-from-the-raspberry-pi/ Volumio's recent review: https://volumio.org/allo-digione-player-probably-best-volumio-based-spdif-transport/ Personal take: My dac happen to have galvanically isolated usb, so it sounds heavenly as it is. But sometimes RaspberryPi has been a bottleneck as these usb buffer overran/underran clipping noises leaking into the chain. I decided to try a DIGIONE, to see if it would illuminate this problem. Yes, RPI's usb was the culprit. After installing the DIGIONE on my RPI and selecting I2S Digione in Volumio config, my system sounds as good as before, without the usb induced artifacts.
  2. Just saw that Allo has released a Signature Digione version that is supposed to allow powering RPI and DIgione board separately, provide better clocks, etc. Having both DIgione and USBridge, I found comparing the two that the Digione is very promising, a digital artifact free, easy to live with product but its lack of resolving power for low level signals made it inferior to a fully tweaked USBridge set up. Would love to hear feedback from anyone who does take the plunge to buy the Digione Signature on how much or little it improves over the original DIgione with good power supply. https://www.allo.com/sparky/digione-signature-player.html
  3. I have the Cambridge Audio DAC Magic+ Am currently running it off USB A-B cable of a decent quality, directly to the DAC in async 24bit/192KHz mode from my Mac (wich is equipped with SSD and enough RAM so jitter should not be too bad). I really really like the DM+, but sometimes it's a little too bright and wish it had more of the warmth I was used to when I replaced my Arcam rDAC with it (I needed the headphone out in the DM+). I have a VDH DigiCoupler 75Ohm COAX digital cable laying around and wondering if I should buy the newly released HiFace2 from M2Tech to bridge from USB to coax and then from coax to DAC. Anyone here have anything to say about that combination, what should I expect and does it actually make any difference?
  4. Hello. I am confused about what is the best means (sound quality wise) of moving digital music files to a DAC. I read all about USB DACs using asynchronous connections so that the DAC takes over clock duties from the Pc (is that something to do with jitter?), how the various types of connections can be limited in the music file's maximum bit depth and sampling frequency etc etc. How does ethernet fare up sound quality wise? I assume it is unlimited when it comes to the music file's bit depth and sampling frequency, but what about jitter, clock ownership? Please, can someone out there tell me what the best connection is, technically? I am assuming that the best connection technically will also be the best connection for outright sound quality?? Many thanks.
  5. Hey everyone, my built in DAC on my excellent Stello AI 500 only does 24/192 with the coax input. So since the Stello U3 USB to Coax converter is well reviewed and the same manufacture I figured I'd pick one of these up to see if it made a difference to me. I need a very short USB maybe a foot if that, to run to the Stello U3 from my IMAC. Then a longer digital coax cable, 12 feet or so to make it to my DAC. I have about 200 bucks to spend on cables, just looking for something quality. Used or new. Thanks for the input! Currently I am running a medical grade glass toslink cable out from my Imac, using Jriver Mac as my player. I like this set just wanting to experiment with a different configuration for my 24/192 files.
  6. Let's suppose I have a recently purchased DAC with a lot of different choices for the digital interfaces. Is there one that is (likely to be) much better than the others? Or is there one that is (likely to be) worse? I am asking in terms of theoretically the best/worst and also in terms of typical implementations (say with a $5k price cap). I hear a lot about noise, ground loops, jitter, etc. but it isn't clear to me if there are clear differences across brands in these effects or in SQ overall. Choices include: USB WiFi (I use Apple AirPlay from iTunes currently) Toslink Ethernet (I have CAT 6 cable runs) HDMI Thunderbolt Coax I will leave out bluetooth....
