  1. I see a number of high-end gadgets and cables that promise improved SQ, lower jitter, lower noise, etc., by injecting external 5v power into the cable, replacing the dirty and noisy 5v supplied by the PC. Seemed to me that this should be an easy DYI project, so I went ahead and spliced an off-the-shelf USB cable, severed the 5v power lines coming from the PC and connected an external jack that now accepts an external power supply. This enabled two experiments. I could now try a better regulated 5v power, including an LPS, or, I could try to see if my digital devices don't need power altogether by not plugging in external power. The cable works, as I have some USB gadgets that run on the USB-provided 5v that work correctly, and some data-only gadgets that also work, even without the 5v. Except for one device. Has anyone else tried such a project, and what did you find? Any suggestions or recommendations on what to do or not to do? When the cable (and the device) work, the sound is improved. But, I have one device that refuses to recognize the cable, with external power or without it. As long as I have all four wires and the shield connected all the way through, this device works. But, with my modded cable, the PC never recognizes the device. Any ideas why?
  2. hi may i ask your favorite cable to connect your dac to your amply? let's avoid the copper 99.9% cable just because they are so exansive i have tried ugreen and urgen ,haven't found any differences i found this link cable review they put amazon cable the best may i know you feebacks? thanks
  3. I would like to upgrade the (detachable) cable on my AKG K7XXs with something shorter than the standard 10 foot cable that came with them. I probably only need 4 to 6 feet. It has the AKG three pin connector. I looked online and their a quite a few available on Amazon, etc. Anything in particular I should consider for these particular headphones? (62 ohms) Any suggestions based on experience to help me narrow down the choices. I don't think I want to spend more than about $75 (it looks like there are quite a few well below that - but again, looking for something tried and true). Your input would be most appreciated. Thanks!
  4. First let me apologize for my previous post with spacing errors. It was modified when when I pasted it from my clipboard. I have asked the administrator to remove it. This review is for the TotalDac D1 cable/filter. TotalDac is a French company that specializes in digital to analog converters. Their products have been reviewed by Audiostream and other main stream sites. I stumbled upon the D1 while purchasing a Chord EX. The sales representative told me about the D1 and highly recommended it, even though he did not carry the line. I was a bit shocked that he made a recommendation outside of his product line. It appears that there are still people out there that value the audiophile experience over the almighty buck. Let me preface by saying that I was in high end audio and video sales for 6 or 7 years while working through college and have had the lucky experience of playing with some really nice equipment in the stores and customer homes. I am new to the computer scene. Over the past 6 months I have been shocked by the quality and convenience afforded by the computer as a source. I have had three DACs in my system inthe past 6 months. I have used three USB cables including the D1. My comparison cable is an Audioquest Carbon. There is a substantial difference in price between the two cables but this is what I have onhand for comparison. The carbon is .75m and the D1 is three meters. The three meter length allows easy access to my laptop whilelistening. Vincent from Totaldac assured me the length was fine asthe filter portion is placed near the end of the cable. I assume that the filter technology plays a large part in the performance of the cable. I have had the D1 in my system for almost a week, running a signal 24 hours a day. I could hear a substantial difference between the AQ and the D1 right out of the box. I do not have my audiophile dictionary or thesaurus handy so please take my descriptions with a grain of salt. The performance of this cable is startling. Please keep in mind this is coming from a guy that bought into the simple 1s and 0s idea of a USB cable. The purchase was a hard pill to swallow as the cable sells for 330 to 390 euros depending on length. I only paid 800 dollars for my DAC so this was a leap of faith based on other reviews and advice as mentioned above. I am going to list the main improvements I hear with the D1, in order of my perceived significance: detail at all levels including instrument texture coherence three dimensional presentation liquid and smooth delivery enveloping sound in all planes huge bass scale and control When listening I find I am literally “sucked” into the music. Clearly this is based on the quality of the recording and sound engineering. This cable will expose all aspects of the recording. Performers occupy distinct areas in the stage and the presentation is LARGE. Ambiance and air is amazing. I attribute this to the ability of the cable to pass along the detail of the recording. The music extends in front of, outside of, over and well beyond the plane of my speakers. As I mentioned I feel like I am enveloped by the sound vs a flatter presentation. I am not a big fan of forward presentations. Even though the presentation is somewhat forward it is well balanced by a deep rear soundstage. In summary, even though the cable is expensive the increase in performance is on par with a component upgrade. I can truly say I have seen improvement in all areas withthe D1. The cable may improve over the next week but I am happy where I am, listening right now. I have a loaner scheduled from the Cable Co. for the Lightspeed. We will see if audiophile nervosa takes hold. 5. This review is for the TotalDac D1cable/filter. TotalDac is a French company that specializes indigital to analog converters. Their products have been reviewed byAudiostream and other main stream sites. I stumbled upon the D1while purchasing a Chord EX. The sales representative told me aboutthe D1 and highly recommended it, even though he did not carry theline. I was a bit shocked that he made a recommendation outside ofhis product line. It appears that there are still people out therethat value the audiophile experience over the almighty buck. Let me preface by saying that I was inhigh end audio and video sales for 6 or 7 years while working throughcollege and have had the lucky experience of playing with some reallynice equipment in the stores and customer homes. I am new to thecomputer scene. Over the past 6 months I have been shocked by thequality and convenience afforded by the computer as a source. I have had three DACs in my system inthe past 6 months. I have used three USB cables including the D1. Mycomparison cable is an Audioquest Carbon. There is a substantialdifference in price between the two cables but this is what I have onhand for comparison. The carbon is .75m and the D1 is three meters. The three meter length allows easy access to my laptop whilelistening. Vincent from Totaldac assured me the length was fine asthe filter portion is placed near the end of the cable. I assume thatthe filter technology plays a large part in the performance of thecable. I have had the D1 in my system foralmost a week, running a signal 24 hours a day. I could hear asubstantial difference between the AQ and the D1 right out of thebox. I do not have my audiophile dictionary or thesaurus handy soplease take my descriptions with a grain of salt. The performance of this cable isstartling. Please keep in mind this is coming from a guy that boughtinto the simple 1s and 0s idea of a USB cable. The purchase was ahard pill to swallow as the cable sells for 330 to 390 eurosdepending on length. I only paid 800 dollars for my DAC so this was aleap of faith based on other reviews and advice as mentioned above. Iam going to list the main improvements I hear with the D1, in orderof my perceived significance: detail at all levels including instrument texture coherence three dimensional presentation liquid and smooth delivery enveloping sound in all planes huge bass scale and control When listening I find I am literally“sucked” into the music. Clearly this is based on the quality ofrecording and sound engineering. This cable will expose all aspectsof the recording. Performers occupy distinct areas in the stage andthe presentation is LARGE. Ambiance and air is amazing. I attributethis to the ability of the cable to pass along the detail of therecording. The music extends in front of, outside of, over and wellbeyond the plane of my speakers. As I mentioned I feel like I amenveloped by the sound vs a flatter presentation. I am not a big fanof forward presentations. Even though the presentation is somewhatforward it is well balanced by a deep rear soundstage. 6. Hi, Short Question: Is there any guidelines/ideas on how to split the money spent in components to get maximum audio quality on a system at a given price. My own system example: 10 % Desktop PC 03 % PCI to USB CARD 01 % USB Cable 33 % DAC (Stereo) 03 % XLR Cables 50 % Active Monitors (Stereo) $5K-$30K Price Range I did a few searches on the topic and came empty handed, but please post a link if any or your toughts/example. Long Explanation: The idea is to have a guideline in to how much to spend in a Component versus an other in a given system. There will be too many variable behind those %, probably hundreds of disccusions about components etc. Please, I'm trying to stay away from particular discussions, brands and models, I know it's hard :-) I assume that everyone will pick their favourite component brand influenced by they priority's e.g. Connectivity, Design, Power etc. Don't quote me on the %, I'm guessing base on my limited experience/reading (I suppose most will do the same) (the leading 0 on the % number is just to keep the alignment) It will change with the whole system price, so price range should be a factor. But may be wider than $5K-$20K. Also avancement on technology of a component will tend to reduce it's % vs the rest. This should be the case of DAC vs Speaker If you change the system design itself just list the components as a chain, e.g. Active Monitor may change for Amplifier>Cables>Speakers How I think to use the guideline: For example I'm upgrading all cables. Currently my DAC is the best component, which is likely stay in the system longer. So I would take the value of the DAC $6500 and apply the % in reverse to get the whole system value Target System ($) = Component ($) / Component (%) $6500 / 33% = $19,696 33% will be 0.33 in this case or 100 / 33 That is not my current system value, but the one I would build if I keep the DAC in place and upgrade all the other components. Now, How much should I spend on my next XLR Cables to match the DAC value? Component ($) = Target System ($) x Component (%) XLR Cables $ = $19,696 x 3% XLR Cables $ = $590 Remember it's just a guideline, to somehow "relate" our audiophile daydreaming with the pocket :-) Regards, Yogui. Chris, If the site have some kind of user form everyone could place their current system components, that may also be an indication and work as a reference with profiles etc. head-fi does it and I found it usefull.
  7. First off, Hi, been enjoying reading these forums for a while now as a guest, but now I need some advice I'm looking for a laptop as my music server that will connect to my DAC. I've been considering a HP 255 G3 Laptop - Laptops at Ebuyer and a Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 - USB sound card - Creative Labs (UK) and was wondering if you guys had any better suggestions (I can't go Mac as I just can't afford one). Also, for my radio listening I was advised that I couldnt use a 3.5mm mini TOS to TOS (Optical Digital Audio Cable) to connect my phone to the DAC and to just use a Premium Grade Black Thin 3.5mm Mini Jack to Mini Jack Audio Cable connected to my amp's front panel. I now have the tablet and would a toslink cable work now or not? I really want to utalize my DAC more as I generally listen to the radio during the day and the poor thing isnt getting much use. Velve
  8. Hi guys, I currently own a very cheap, thin black 3.5mm to phono cable, which is running between my amp and my Macbook Pro. I think it's probably time to upgrade as there is no reason I should have such a cheap cable in my chain. I'm ideally still looking for a value cable, just one that isn't £1; the max i'd be able to spend is between £15 and £20 but ideal would be £10. Would I notice any discernible difference with a new cable at this price? Also my setup is: Macbook Pro > Audirvana Plus > Fiio E10K > Pioneer A-676 (Old) > Monitor Audio BR2's > BK XXLS400 As you can see it's a fairly basic system. The Fiio is being delivered as I type this and I just didn't want a cable to be holding the whole thing back. Any advice would be welcomed, thanks .
  9. Hello , i'm Alex from France ( I don't know if there is an introduction post so please excuse me if i'm being rude ) I've got a tubemagic d1 plus for a week , using it on a macbook pro (snow leopard) with audirvana plus. It can handle 24/96 on USB and 24/192 on optical (I'm using a wireworld mini toslink to toslink) Being a newby, i've got a few questions 1) is it normal that, : - the sound is greatly better using USB vs optical (wireworld mini toslink to toslink cable) - audirvana can't enable integer mode with optical whereas USB can 2) when I got into Mac os x "Audio and midi set up" , I can see the mavaudio tubemagic tab and property (2 in and 2 out) but when I set (for in or out) the audio settings to 96khz and 2ca 24bit system's not Working. Indeed it's only working when one sets mav audio settings to 2ca 16bit. the question is : does it mean i'm listenning at 16bit ? what can I do to make it better ? Thanks a lot Alex

The length of these cables is 0.8m. Bought this pair of cables directly from Townshend Audio in UK. PayPal invoice upon request. Buying a new pair will set you back at least £600.00. Well run in. Review here says it all: Woohoo! When the music poured through these British cables, I blurted an involuntary hoot of approval. The Townshend Isolda cables have much of the midrange openness, clarity and easy flow of the Skywire 1400s but with the addition of greater treble sparkle and deep, take-no-prisoners bass. The lowest plucked acoustic bass notes in "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers" on Brian Bromberg's virtuosic Wood [A440 Records/ART7009] became more articulate, with clearer pitch definition and harmonic overtones than I had previously heard. I was also surprised by the Isoldas' seemingly higher efficiency. http://sixmoons.com/audioreviews/5cables/1.html Price: 280.00 Euro includes free registered shipping within EU Accepting PayPal or TransferWise.
