I have the über Bifrost and now see one can send it to Schiit for the Multibit upgrade. Has anyone done this and, if so, what are your impressions?

I am really looking forward to taking delivery of a Schiit Bifrost Multibit in the next couple of weeks (as soon as the next batch is scheduled to go out). I use Audirvana to play everything (including my iTunes library). For 176.4kHz and 192kHz input sample rates, the Bifrost runs in non-oversampling (NOS) mode. What does this mean for input sample rates that are less than 176.4Hz? Most of my music files are 24/96 or 24/192, but I also have ripped all of my CDs in 16/44 lossless. I know this is probably a personal preference, but for those of you with this DAC, do you do any upsampling in Audirvana for any of your music files? If so, what settings? My apologies in advance if this is a stupid question with an obvious answer. I am still very much a newby. Thanks!

Hi all! New to the site and happy to make my first post. From reading I get bits and pieces, but want to ask for advice directly. I'm looking for a new source to feed > Odyssey Candela Pre > Odyssey Mono Extremes > Martin Logan Ascent i's. Previously I was using Logitech Touch > Cambridge Audio DACMagic. However I sold my front end. I would really like to use a Tablet so I can surf, play games, load with magazines an take on business trips. If budget allows I'd like a Surface Pro 2 with JRMC > Schiit Bifrost. I think I could simply connect the Surface to a USB HUB which would be connected to an external HD and the DAC. Will this work? Is the Surface the best bet, because the ASUS T100 a lot cheaper. And is the Bifrost still viewed well? Because I keep hearing good things about the ifi products. Please advise. Thanks, Bob

I get confused more than I like to admit and with that I mix and match details. So my questions: - using iTunes AirPlay connected to an airport express and a Schiit Bifrost via a toslink cable, are my 24/96 HD lossless-converted files playing as 24/96? I know I can't play 24/96 directed from the computer to a dac but are the files being sent to the express bit perfect?

hello everybody - first post! my little stereo employs an apple airport express as source and I am contemplating the addition of a dac. the airport express offers optical spdif-output and currently I am looking at the shiit bifrost. I like the small form factor and also that the base version comes in spdif only. I don't need usb and thus why paying for it I know many people like the bifrost but still would like to hear opinions. especially if it will make a noticeable difference on an airport express. I also would be grateful to be pointed to alternatives and hear about experiences dac'ing airport expresses. as for context: chain is airport express -> adam sub8 highpass -> crimson cs620c -> mission 760se. cables are all dnm solid-core. music is a nutritious mix of chamber-music, death-metal and free-jazz with an occasional serving of zesty electronica. thx! -- mcgillroy

So today I decided to put the Marantz NA6005 through the ringer and see how it actually performs up against a great affordable DAC, the fully loaded Schiit Bifrost. The Bifrost has the upgraded USB board as well as the upgraded "Uber" analog output board. The Bifrost has many thousands of hours on it. It's been powered up ever since the first day I bought it over 2 years ago. The NA6005 has been up and running non-stop for the past two and a half weeks, so roughly 400 hours on it. The Schiit is being fed via a Wireworld Ultraviolet 2 meter USB cable with JRiver off of a stripped down Compaq laptop, then out through Wireworld Oasis 7 1 meter interconnects to the preamp. The Marantz is being fed via a Belkin CAT5 2 meter cable, through an old Netgear 10/100/1000 switch, streaming directly from the NAS and another Belkin CAT5 cable, then out through an old pair of Cardas Crosslink interconnects to the preamp. Both units getting fed quality 24/96 FLAC files straight from the NAS. Now comes the fun part, the comparison... The tests were done with the same tracks playing, with the Marantz playing roughly one second ahead of the other, so when switching back and forth I could hear and remember exactly how one sounded with not only instruments, but also by word of the songs. I also tried running the Toslink out of the Marantz into the Bifrost, then switching back and forth that way, which ultimately ended in the same exact results as mentioned below. Both the Schiit Bifrost DAC and the Marantz NA6005 sound almost identical. Same amount of bass and attack, same silky smooth top end, same dynamics, same inner detail, same sound stage width and depth. The ONLY difference between the two is that the Bifrost has just a touch more fullness and warmth in the midrange, especially with vocals. This gives vocals just a bit more heft and scale, which is a good thing. I then wondered if that touch of extra fullness and warmth in the midrange was due to the different interconnects being used on both units, so I swapped them. The Wireworld cables now on the Marantz, the Cardas cables on the Schiit. Sure enough, that fullness and warmth left the Bifrost and went to the NA6005! Also, with said cable swap, the bass on the Marantz seems to be a little more detailed and tighter as well as the sound stage depth being just a little deeper with the Wireworld cables. Everything else seems to have remained the same. This is also a pleasant finding. So all in all, both the Schiit DAC and the DAC in the Marantz sound virtually identical, with the Marantz getting the slight edge in a bit more bass detail and stage depth. That says quite a bit about the NA6005's capabilities considering for all practical purposes it just beat the fully upgraded and praised Schiit Bifrost, which is an extremely good DAC as well. I guess this means I can free up some $$$ by selling off the Bifrost and USB cable.
