Realism vs Accuracy For Audiophiles | Part 1: Soundstage
bluesman posted an article in Bits and Bytes
... and there’s clearly no unanimity of thought about them. A site search of AS for the key word “soundstage” brought 200 pages of 25 hits each, for a total of about 5000 posts in hundreds of threads – so the topic is clearly of interest to audiophiles. Let’s explore it a bit. Here’s an interesting definition (from Rtings.com) that distinguishes between sound stage and imaging: “Sound stage determines the spac... -
Here is a test track which will play clip of male and female voice recorded at various position. I use this track to setup my system so that the system could reproduce the exact position during the playback. I will mark the chart and compare with the original position. It is also a good way to demo your system's accuracy by asking visitors to mark the chart. For an example, say, one excerpt of the sound was 15 degrees to the right and hopefully the listener's would mark an "11" around there on the chart. The chart The interesting part of the recording is that you l

...There is definitely merit to spdif investigations. I did a further test this morning and the soundstage is better constructed using spdif, with a noticeable increase in soundstage height compared to USB (and my USB set up is pretty darn good). This is through speakers of course. I will also try spdif with the warm filter as well, as it might keep the soundstage and bring the signature closer to USB compared to the neutral filter. ...

...ual instruments separately (in space and often time), have vocalists in booths, etc., then create a soundstage (artificial) in the digital audio workstation. Re. prioritizing soundstage v other qualities in our systems, I think both, but the first priority for me is accuracy to tonal qualities (i.e. if I could only have one). Even before stygian bass- "you have to get the midrange right." As I think about it, I would rather listen i... -

...usic, thank you for this very detailed review. Can you help me understand what you mean by a curved soundstage? Also what do you mean when SLP and SRP are shifted further left and right in the soundstage? Do you mean that the L and R images appear to be coming right from the speakers themselves or from outside the speakers towards the side walls?...

...Meaning, that there was a stronger sense of a soundstage with the vinyl? The rest of your post implies that; and adds the proviso that it's probably "LP distortion" - anyway, if so, then rest easy, grasshopper 😜 ... the soundstage is what's on the recording - it's up to the particular digital chain to lift its game, to match that of the vinyl ... 😉....

...Going back to Greene's apparent lacuna on 'soundstage' for a moment. After stating his straw man he says this : Since no one has any idea of what kind of soundstage ought to arise from most recordings, soundstage is not really a sensible criterion for evaluation of anything. Hmm, dismissive over-much? In the course of my DAC development in the past week or so I've uncovered (in the limited context of multibit DAC design) s...

...menon. It is an interplay from the speakers, room, and ears. It is how our brain then discerns that soundstage. It may be we are so used to hearing music live, that we naturally and automatically assign soundstage to the music. I mean from a studio, how can one actually have a soundstage when, in these times, people record alone and then compile those recordings?...

... all of them). I think from my own experience and reading that of others who have heard or owned SR soundstage enhancers that the word "holographic" used above is a good description of the house sound SR wants to create. I have an SR orange fuse that was installed by the manufacturer in the Sonore power supply for my opticalRendu, so I can't truly evaluate its impact (because I can't remove/replace/compare to another fuse for that dev... -

...I20HE and the PS Audio PWT (both I2S). The DI20HE sounds better imho than the USB direct input, the soundstage of the DI is slightly deeper in comparison. I also prefer the coffee USB against solid silver (i.e. Nimak black). PLL is always on, soundstage width and depths is more neat. The burn in process should not be underrated in my opinion and logging with the DI takes a few seconds when sample format is changed, the direct USB input is way fas...
