When I know the owner of the label, the engineer who records for the label, the person who sends content to Apple for the label, yes.

The Computer Audiophile reacted to GoldenOne in Denafrips DACs might not actually be NOS?
So I put the denafrips IR through the APx555 today to look into things a bit further and found a couple interesting tidbits.

When putting an impulse response through it, viewed with a 2.496mhz sample rate, we see this:
These 'steps' appear to be 32x the input 44.1khz sample rate.

The second interesting thing is that the impulse response derived from the transfer function looks like a normal sinc impulse response. Whereas deriving the IR on either the holo may or the ADI-2 with the 'NOS' filter there, shows something very close to the true IR.

So there is definitely some seemingly adaptive DSP or something at work here.

I tried a few tracks using Apple TV 4K (the old one). I can configure the Music app to lossless and with Atmos enabled (auto mode). The Apple TV connects to Yamaha RXA-3080 via HDMI.

First up with lossless tracks - they were listed as lossless in the Music app but then when I checked the input sampling rate the Yamaha is displaying 48 kHz. I only tried a couple tracks but all are 48 kHz, even though those albums are 44.1khz in Qobuz for example.

This can only mean two things. Either Apple somehow has a lossless version of the source in 48 kHz or the Apple TV is resampling it to 48 kHz. I incline to believe it is the latter as it makes no sense to keep both 44.1 and 48 versions of the same source.

So how about the sound? Not very inspiring tbh. The Apple TV can sound good when the source is good, even some youtube videos can sound decent. In comparison, the few 48 kHz lossless tracks I tested is simply not up to par. The sound is a bit hazy, lacking focus and separation. I won't be surprised that's due to the 48 kHz resampling. Perhaps I can try some native 48 kHz later to see if that makes any difference.

Next is Atmos. It works but the Atmos catalog is really tiny. Moreover, most of them are in fact Atmo-sified version of existing recordings. While the Atmos version generally offer a more enveloping sound in my 6.2.4 setup, I don't find it add too much to the enjoyment of the music. The sound quality is also so so, far from those Atmos tracks in UHD discs.

I hope that if Apple really cares about quality - the very reason for lossless to begin with, they should do it right or it just ends up giving a bad name for "lossless" streaming.

    My two cents.

    Ah thanks for the info!

Apple design has really gone to the “click around and find out” method.

If I understand this correctly, you have to play the music, then click on the info button to get the sample rate, then change audio midi, then close & reopen Apple Music.

    So convenient :~)

If this really happened, the HDCD indicator would be always off (which is different from the test results that found it occasionally turned on in the article).

So I'm going to have an APx555 here for a couple weeks (not mine, not keeping it, just here temporarily). This likely won't be long enough to do some of the more in-depth stuff but I'm going to measure anything I can get my hands on just cause why not, but also will probably do a brief video explaining a little about why the APx555 is different to just using a good ADC etc.

If anyone has anything specific that they think I should do whilst it's here lmk!

only found out now about Alex passing away. really sorry to hear that. met him in several chats here. haven't been too much on CA (aka AS), but this brought up some nice memories.

it's interesting how these things do matter. how audio brings people together and how this somehow actually is a true community, despite the mostly virtual nature of it.

honestly hope you guys have been doing well, enjoying good music with a great system and healthy relationships.

Hi Guys, many of you know him as @sandyk and have had spirited conversations with him over the years here and on other forums. I just received the sad news that he has passed away. Here's what I received.

"I'm sorry to say that Grandpa passed away at 8:27pm tonight at Wyong hospital. He went into the hospital in an ambulance very early morning around 1:30am after vomiting. Doctors found Bowel obstruction. Colon. Rectal cancer. They operated Rubbish ended up in his lungs. He couldn't breath by himself. Was put on a ventilator. Drugs keepin him alive for blood pressure and heart etc. Body in too much in shock. Blood test later in the evening showing negative results. The doctor's decided to let him passed and take his tubes out as he will not recover. He passed away peacefully I'm so sorry to tell this. Please passed this on if you can."

No worries from anyone (I'm guessing) if you think it sounds good(?).

People like what they like. Live and let listen. However, when it impedes on other's enjoyment of our wonderful hobby then there can be issues. MQA could be the trojan horse that many people spotted miles away. We just don't know.
