  1. Has anyone found / proved that we can use a USB flash drive or SD card for the cache and imports? I don't see the need to use my SSD, and would like the max allowable 100GB cache space. Since speed and reliability are not important for cache and importing, does it work to use cheap external storage? (I don't want to check it out myself 'cos I will lose my current cache and I guess I will need to attach a fixed drive letter to a USB drive.)

  3. Thanks for that suggestion. How ridiculous that one would need to "remember this one" when wanting to listen to some music. Qobuz (and Tidal) are really fantastic, but there is a severe cost. Every time I settle down to listen to some music, I half-expect to have to spend some of my time in IT fault-finding. Windows quirks, or sound settings quirks, or flaky applications, or internet issues (which in turns breaks down to ISP, copper line provider, router, wifi, and now DNS provider!). The last time this happened, it took me 15 minutes to identify that I just needed to turn my DAC off and on again, a "fix" which has never ever happened before on that one component in the long, convoluted and flaky chain. Not surprising that normal people prefer to listen "on Alexa".
  4. I am still having some distractions following the new release(s) last week - I hear occasional short, not-loud clicks on some tracks. Perhaps 20 or 30 per track. Worse on hi-res tracks. Never happened before (this new release) in one year with Qobuz on 3 PCs and two DACs. Any ideas please? Windows 10 application, WASAPI Exclusive Mode, 70Mbps broadband, recent good-quality i5-8xxxU laptop, SSD, Pro-Ject S2 Digital DAC via USB. (I also experienced some of the other problems reported here - freezing, "not responding" - but those have since evaporated.)

There is a more general usability disappointment in the Windows application, in that it is always (usually?) the case that if you navigate away from a page to investigate something, when you return your context/place is lost. For example, when scrolling through a long playlist, the same happens as reported by Mr. Polyglot above with searching - if you check out an entry in your playlist, and then return, you are returned to the top of the playlist listing, and have to navigate back down again to where you started.
  7. I enjoyed listening to MQA from Tidal without difficulty for months - until I switched to Qobuz. I didn't switch to Qobuz because of bugs affecting MQA playback, but because I became jaded with trying to penetrate the obfuscation surrounding MQA. MQA for me is an extra level of complexity in an already-complex process of reproducing digitally-streamed music well. And MQA the organisation are too duplicitous in their explanations of what's going on. They have made an abstruse technology even more awkward to embrace. So, whilst my comment doesn't assist Jumpwire's with his MQA hassle, I am answering his original question "Is no one using MQA decoding with this DAC?".

The fully-charged voltage is 5.45V, and falls immediately to 5.3V when connected (and under load), which I believe is only slightly above USB voltage specs. Anyway, the S2D doesn't complain or get warm at 5.3V. The box supplies power for about 2 hours using 2900mAh NiMH cells. The S2D misbehaves when the voltage falls to about 4.5V This is such a cheap solution that I have two. When one runs out, I plug in the other and recharge. Simple, if inconvenient. No switching. No regulators. No mains noise. No common-mode noise.
  9. I have seen the same problem with the same Pro-Ject S2D DAC. I've seen this with perhaps 4 or 5 albums.
  10. I did send a thorough report directly to Qobuz support, over a week ago. Other than a computer-generated receipt I received no reply, or thanks, or acknowledgement. (I am finding Qobuz support even worse than Tidal in terms of not reading problem reports carefully, and then replying with not-relevant responses.)
  11. Some here have complained of the Qobuz Windows application being slow and resource-hungry. It may help you simply to minimise the Qobuz window... I noticed the Windows application behaving strangely in that it was consuming a lot of GPU resource - over 50%. This was causing my PC to run hot and for the fan to run loudly. The GPU resource (plus considerable CPU resource as well) is consumed even when the screen is static - no movement on screen at all. It happens whether I am listening to hi-res or not. It even happens if Qobuz is a background window, with a foreground window over the top of Qobuz Player. BUT it does NOT happen if the Qobuz window is minimised. And CPU resource is also reduced if the window is minimised. So, a temporary workaround for others may be to minimise the application's window, rather than leaving it hidden, but not minimised, behind other windows. My Intel NUC uses a recent and fast laptop processor - i7-6770HQ @ 2.6GHz, and the GPU is integrated Iris Pro Graphics 580. (According to Windows's "Task Manager" the GPU resource is "3D".) Can anyone suggest what might cause this unexpected behaviour?
  12. I have used my S2D exclusively to stream Tidal & Qobuz so far. Streaming hi-res and MQA all work fine. But today I tried playing some hi-res files through Foobar. But S2D's display shows 44.1kHz. Foobar shows the files correctly as 96kHz or 192kHz as appropriate. I have selected the S2D in Foobar's "output" tab in "Preferences". There don't seem to be any effects selected. The equaliser is not enabled. Windows 10 with the Windows App version of Foobar2000. Why on earth would such a simple task not work?
  13. Thanks for the links Rica. That's a smart web site that iFi have nowadays. I am afraid I have not experimented with any devices like those. Partly because I trust John Westlake to have done an optimal job for the money, and partly because of my inadequate ears - I cannot hear any difference between: power over the signal USB power from the supplied wall wart power from a linear battery supply (NiMH) when using LCD3 headphones. I reckon that in the last few days we've been discussing three very distinct possible improvements to the S2D: Noise injected via the power USB Noise injected via the signal USB Jitter in the (USB) signal I believe that the S2D handles (2) and (3) particularly well, and it may be difficult to achieve improvements here. A large number of enthusiasts made £50 contributions to John Westlake to develop new techniques for controlling jitter, and John has proudly announced that many of the developments were incorporated into the S2D. From comments John has made over the years, I believe that his only concern with switching power supplies is not noise generated by the switching process, but common mode noise loops arising from the RFI suppression capacitors which are fitted to switching PSUs to control their EMI tendencies. Linear supplies do not need these capacitors. I have always suspected (no evidence) that this is why the manual confusingly talks about not using the supplied wall-wart when connected via (signal) USB - because if the S2D is connected to its PC/phone/streamer via USB, then there is more opportunity for common mode noise loops though the capacitors in the wall-wart, than there would be using optical or co-ax.

I recall someone saying that this annoyance is caused by Pro-Ject's driver for the IR HID stuff, that is, for Pro-Ject's W10 driver which handles the S2D receiving IR commands from its remote control and then sending those commands to the PC over USB. This person claimed that by disabling the driver (listed as "HID") in W10's device manager, that the annoyance is solved. (Although, of course, the remote control will then cease controlling the PC.)
  16. I have just spent 50 minutes IMing with Chromecast support. What a strange character these mega corporates have. If they were individuals, we would definitely describe them as mentally insane. As expected, no progress at all. Except to point out that the current CCA software has been upgrade since the support thread you posted above Axell. (Is now 1.36) So could be a new or different or re-emergent bug. (I am intrigued that it only started for me last week.)
  17. I am having to pick tracks which are not hi-res! - my Chromecast Audio has begun experiencing dropouts on 96k. Not 16/44, and not 24/44. It has been working fine for weeks, but has been doing this for about 5 days now. Anyone else getting this with CCA? My internet is fine (70Mbps), the CCA is connected over ethernet, and I have tried two different DACs. Also tried casting both from Windows10 and from Android. UK account, not beta. Works fine with DAC fed by Windows PC and DAC fed by Android. I assume that Qobuz is feeding a different stream / from different IP address to a CCA than it would to a PC (don't really know why I should assume this) and I suspect that this could be what is wrong.
  18. I have given up with the complexities and ambiguities of MQA and Tidal Masters, and have moved to Qobuz. Thanks to left channel for the gentle persuasion. But I am surprised to see such a baffling set of "audio output" options, and can find no explanation or FAQ answer. My selected output "Pro-Ject Box ASIO Driver" does not appear anywhere in Windows 10, specifically nowhere in the Windows 10 Sound Settings. Is it the case that Qobuz is bypassing Windows's sound stuff straight to the Pro-Ject driver somehow, in a way which Tidal does not? Can anyone enlighten me please? Left channel?

  20. I'm afraid this is a day too late - as I said in my post above "I selected 'update driver' and pointed device manager to search my hard drive and it found a driver & installed it. Now working." But I need to add a section about software versions to the summary document. I think there's 3 bits of software we use? (a) firmware (b) driver and (c) the "Pro-Ject Audio Control Panel" which I've never understood. Is the XMOS software in the driver? Or is the XMOS software the driver? And who is Thesycon? Did Thesycon write the driver for XMOS? Hmm.
  21. My PC updated to Windows 1809 today and my S2D stopped working. It was a head-scratching waste of half an hour to get it going again. When I first plugged in the S2D (into USB) Windows reported it was "setting up a new device" and that "is now working". But S2D did not appear in the sound options. The only place it appeared was in the settings page for Devices, where I was informed "driver not found". No plugging/unplugging and restarting would fix. In device manager, I selected "update driver" and pointed device manager to search my hard drive and it found a driver & installed it. Now working. I would be interested if anyone could tell me what's going on, why the 1809 upgrade would cause this one device's driver to go missing, even though Windows "set stuff up" when I first plugged the S2D in. (I hate Microsoft.) Thanks.
  22. Do apps' "cast" menu options work as well to Raspberry Pi as they do to CCA? Or is there typically some other mechanism required to "play" an app on RPi instead of CCA?
