Question on album artwork when converting files from ALAC to AIFF

I am in the process of converting my files from Apple Lossless to AIFF. I have manually embedded all artwork with these files. My question is do the artwork files remain embedded with the converted AIFF files or do I have to manually re-embed them? How would I check that to verify?

What I am finding is in the conversion when using iTunes for the conversion process some errors seem to occur leaving 'black boxes' or 'squiggly lined color boxes' in place of artwork on some songs. Changing to MAX for the conversion eliminated this anomaly.
