franepici
Hi All, I may be too basic here, but what's exactly a music server? I mean, what's for example the difference between my laptop with external HD for music storage, USB DAC connected to amplifier, and a "music server"? Is a music server a pc dedicated only to music and nothing else? I read for the first time about music servers on this forum and would kindly like to know more. Thank you very much, Francesco Roselli Link to comment

The Computer Audiophile
In the simplest form a music server is any device that "serves" music and this music is commonly thought to not be a physical disc. Think of an iPod as a small music server. Preferably a music server only plays music, but more often than not the device can surf the internet and check email etc...
