audiophile65
Just wanting to ask how big (in MegaBytes) certain lengths of DSD files are (just a ballpark figure is fine): 40 min. DSD64 (2.8 MHz) 60 min. DSD64 (2.8 MHz) 75 min. DSD64 (2.8 MHz) 40 min. DSD128 (5.6 MHz) 60 min. DSD128 (5.6 MHz) 75 min. DSD128 (5.6 MHz) Thanks! Link to comment
ted_b
75 minutes long, though, so not sure what you are asking. DSD files are generally track-based and, as an example, the stereo ones from the Stones Beggars Banquet SACD (10 songs) are only 1.6GB, yet Mari Kodamas pure DSD-recorded Beethoven Piano Sonatas (16 and 18), a beautiful recording, are 2.7GB ( yet only 9 tracks). The multichannel versions are even larger. What is your intent? If you are hoping to start a DSD collection go get yourself about 4TB or more to be safe. My NAS is 12TB (but some used for redundancy). Not sure where you'd find a source or need for DSD128, but assume twice as large. "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. Espress0
"DSD records a 1-bit data stream at 2.88 MHz. This amounts to roughly 22 MB of disk space per minute" That's a quote from the sonic studio DSD.1 manual, and references 64fs. So around 44 MB per minute for 128fs. Link to comment
Brand B
Did you account for the factor of 2 for stereo? Seems like it should be double that: 2,800,000*60*2/8 = 42,000,000 Link to comment
Ghasley
Ok, here are my file sizes of Miles Davis Kind of Blue. Since everyone on the planet owns this recording, it should be easy to compare. These sizes are for the 5 original tracks and does NOT include the alternate take of Flamenco Sketches, which was included on my redbook cd version. Redbook File Size 300 MB Apple lossless Kind of Blue recorded from vinyl at 5.6 mhz DSD, then stripped to the below sample rates. 16/44 - 486 MB 24/96 - 1588 MB 24/192 - 3176 MB 2.8 DSD - 1946 MB 5.6 DSD - 3892 MB Hope this helps. Miska
For stereo DSD generates 2*44100*64/8 = 705600 bytes per second 705600*60/1048576 = 40.375 megabytes (MiB) per minute 705600*60*60/1048576/1024 = 2.3657 gigabytes (GiB) per hour ...and naturally double the figures for DSD128... Teresa
DST is the losslessly compressed variant of DSD used on SACDs. It would have about the same bit rate savings as FLAC and Apple Lossless. I have dementia. I save all my posts in a text file I call Forums. I do a search in that file to find out what I said or did in the past. I still love music. Teresa Link to comment
ted_b
is unreadable by any player I'm aware of. But it is certainly an archiving method, cuz of the space savings. Mr Wicked's ripper allows raw DST extraction. "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T.
