Over the recent years, I am listening more often to WTC on historic instruments, such as the beautiful versions from Suzuki, Leonhardt, Gilbert, or Beausejour.

 

Of course, there are excellent recordings of WTС on modern piano, such as those from E.Fischer, Gould, Schiff, Hewitt, Tureck, Gulda, Koroliov, etc. At the same time, there are some performances which totally missing the point, such as egomaniacal exercises of S.Richter, who plays mostly himself, but not Bach.

This is probably my favorite of WTC. I prefer the piano. I think this was recorded by Ms. Hewitt before her piano got crashed?

In my top 3 as well. Both of her WTC recordings were made before her F278 Fazioli (the only 4 pedals one in the world) got destroyed. Paolo Fazioli sayid he would never fit four pedals ever again to it this model because 'it was such a pain in the arse'.. She's using 3 pedals Fazioli now.

Count me a fan now, too. Thanks for the recommendation. I would not have imagined this canonical keyboard piece working so well (or even at all) for strings.

Hadn't listened to this in a long time. Great music, great performance, good recording. I saw this band play this music live in a club before AP passed. Live Jazz at it's best.

The Qobuz stream sounds absolutely glorious! (in fact I don't know if it's the remastered version, the album art looks like the original Philips recording)
