Album of the Evening

[Musicophile]

Vol. 26 of the cantata pilgrimage (one week to late, these cantatas were written for Whitmonday). A bit of Bach after a long day of work, with a nice VSOP.

Easy to enjoy contemporary classical for a smallish orchestra. SQ is solid, plenty of detail and hides nothing, which I think sounds appropriate for the arrangements and ensemble.

 

I have no idea how the cover art relates to the music within!

A very worthy Mahler 7th. I’ll definitely be buying it as soon as It hits eClassical and has the new release discount.
 

Impressions purely on first listen...

 

It does manifest what I like to think of as Vänskä’s Nordic reserve, so it doesn’t have the passion of more ardent Mahlerian conductors. Some may actually find that refreshing. 
 

Recording quality is up to BIS high standards. FYI - @bissie

I wish I was able to appreciate Mahler... There are some beautiful, moving bits but I am unable to listen from end to end.

I think I can understand that. IMO there are some movements in his symphonies which seem to ask to skip them from time to time. OTOH the good stuff is often just fantastic!

It seems that the attitude towards Mahler was sharply divided not only among the listeners, but also among the performers. Some of the most famous conductors either never performed Mahler 7th, or have not left recordings that still available: Furtwängler, Karajan, Wand, Klemperer, Muti, Ormandy, Beecham, Giulini, Böhm, Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Reiner, Jochum, Toscanini, etc.

I like all of Mahler's Symphonies except No. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand".

 

Today for me is a festival of Bartok, I'm playing the Bartok New Series on Hungaroton with the Zoltán Kocsis conducting the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.

I rarely listen to the Mahler's 8th either, almost never. My favorite are Nos. 4, 7, 6, 5, 2.
