Popular Post rando
Minnesota Orchestra at One Hundred: A Collection of Recordings and Broadcasts, is a self released box set that features performances by every music director/conductor but the very first. That places the recorded material back as far as 1924. All material on the first six discs, of twelve, was remastered by Seth B. Winner. At least for me this was more exciting than the much easier route comprised entirely of Dorati etc. Tonight I will be digging into Disc 1 containing the very earliest selections conducted by Henri Verbrugghen and Eugene Ormandy. Also managed to collect the subsequently released book "Minnesota Orchestra at One Hundred: A Collection of Essays and Images" to peruse while listening. Front cover in person is a stunning scan of original orchestra in their first hall seated before a large forest painting. Photos are hard to come by so I'm adding a video for those unaware of Mr. Winner's long career at the MET and on other delicate reconstructions. christopher3393 and semente 1 1 Link to comment

Emma started lessons at age four... In August 2009, Emma was invited to participate in the Gabala International Piano Festival in Azerbaijan. At six years of age, Emma was youngest pianist invited to play in this festival. Emma did very well at the festival and was one of two participants in the festival invited to play at Steinway Hall in New York City. Emma released her first self produced CD, Emma: Age 6," in 2009. To relieve you of wondering why I chose to post this and where the young woman is today. Not how voluminous her discography is today. At 16 she is spending her Summer as a soloist in concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra. Having just recently ingested the history of this musical institution, quite heavy on children's concerts and musicians in the schools, I can only be glad of her having an escape into this body of adults well versed at nurturing young musical minds minutes from home. rando
Two things stood out to me about this album. The (normal sized front of case) booklet was among the nicest full color, good paper stock, I've encountered. Secondly, how intuitively these works had been composed to speak to a Midwest audience. As a hint, if you do not know them already, please check the Artur Schnabl versions on pristineclassical.com His playing is highly regarded, together with the astonishing "Pristine" mastering of these 80 year old recordings. The Live feeling and the realism are second to none. https://www.pristineclassical.com/products/pakm046 https://www.pristineclassical.com/products/pakm041 These are my absolute favorites. Schnabel is fantastic, but I still have problems with the SQ in spite of the remaster. Check out my blog at musicophilesblog.com - From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Link to comment

I purchase my music from the iTunes store and I do not hear Yusef Lateef in the band. I searched YouTube for Poinciana from this concert, iTunes notes that he is featured in this song. No signs of him in the video. And the album cover picture looks like he was added in. Great album non the less. Link to comment

Lateef would have been in his early 90s(!) when this was recorded (he died a year later at 93). The blurb at HD Tracks (below) answered the question for me. Looks like he joined the band for the final song (Poinciana). I'm looking forward to giving this a listen once Tidal gets it. Quote Olympia, Paris, June 27, 2012. In this mythical concert hall, the Ahmad Jamal quartet played in telepathic mode to reinvent the Blue Moon repertoire. Then, before giving the audience a transformed rendering of Poinciana, a hit from the Chess era, the pianist brought on stage Yusef Lateef who played with him in the glory days of the Atlantic label. The pioneering world fusion wind player then conjured up some magical moments and took us on one of those mystical journeys to which he has the key. This recording offers the entire historic concert, illuminated by these two jazz greats inspired by groove and the spirit of the sacred. Recorded June 27, 2012 at L'Olympia in Paris, France. Did you really listen to the "Pristine" masterings? In my opinion they are spectacular! Maybe they are not that clean as "new" good recordings, but Schnabels piano is captured, I would say, almost perfect. rando 1 Link to comment

Popular Post Musicophile
In the meantime, listening to one of my latest purchases today from Qobuz as part of their Summer Sale, I got the 24/192 remaster of this classic for €6.99 (including the Sublime discount). Not too bad. I mean, this is still DG 1968 sound, clearly not their best time, but the remaster helps making this fantastic recording even more enjoyable. sphinxsix, Guidof and rando 3 Check out my blog at musicophilesblog.com - From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Link to comment
