Popular Post sphinxsix
IMO the most promising female vocal jazz debut album of 2017. Very nicely recorded too (24-96). Check this out, guys. BacHolz, jiminlogansquare and Musicophile 1 2 Link to comment

sphinxsix
High octane, energetic, inventive jazz. Definitely worth checking out. 24-96 http://vijay-iyer.com/albums/far-from-over/ Booster MPS 1 Link to comment

sphinxsix
There would be much less great piano music without humming pianists. However it's interesting that players of other instruments don't hum that often. Have you guys heard a humming vibraphonist or a guitar player.? One thing is certain - one humming instrumentalist in a band rules out other potential hummers in the same band.. Imagine a whole humming orchestra or a big band.. Link to comment
Popular Post sphinxsix
24--96 'Cirklar' has reached 29th position on the German pop(!) charts. I recall seeing online the latest Tomasz Stanko listed on the 2nd or 3rd position on the Polish Media Markt sales charts (I believe right next to Metallica album). Such things can't happen everywhere in the world.. @Musicophile I think this was you who asked on your blog if their music was jazz and your answer was something like 'I don't really care'. Me either. The improvisational margin in TT music is definitely quite narrow (it's mostly prearranged) but the music is composed, arranged and played with lots of skill, inteligence and I'd use the word 'classical' elegance. A very nice album. Musicophile and BacHolz 2 Link to comment

Probably Urbaniak's solo on Miles Davis 'Don't Lose Your Mind' from 'Tutu' is for me one of the most memorable violin moments in jazz. Musicophile 1 Link to comment

And in his own projects too. Probably one of my favorite violin playing in jazz(?). 5 hours ago, AnotherSpin said: Of course, Ponty has a quite freaky history with Frank Zappa before he joined Mahavishnu I recall from his autobiography that the only complaint Zappa had about Ponty was the fact that he always ended his solos in the same 'spectacular' way to cause an even bigger audience applause (BTW quite similiar to the way Urbaniak finished his solo on 'Tutu'). 5 hours ago, AnotherSpin said: Mark Feldman, he played on several albums of late John Abercrombie, and also with Paul Bley, Joy Lovano and others. And on countless Tzadik label albums eg Bar Kokhba. You've actually reminded me that I like quite many violinists. But it's usually not straight ahead jazz. Link to comment
sphinxsix
Youtube streaming. My favorite format Quite nice music though - I didn't expect so light touch from Dutch Baroque music. Don't know any of the composers. Link to comment
Popular Post sphinxsix
Far from standard trio. The level of communication between the musicians is almost telepathic. Beautiful, intimate album. BacHolz and Charente 1 1 Link to comment

Popular Post sphinxsix
Once again. CD rip. I like it so much I actually haven't listened to their 'Near Gale' album just to leave it 'for later' and still have some unknown A.Trio recordings Elegant, beautiful compositions and fine three musicians (Paliaga being a really good, sensitive pianist) interplay. Are we living in the golden age...? Musicophile, Melvin, Guidof and 1 other 1 3 Link to comment

His live bootleg (I think) recordings are very good too. Not ECM SQ standards though obviously. An interesting album from pre Stanko cooperation times by Simple Acoustic Trio (not ECM SQ either) which later became Marcin Wasilewski Trio. I don't think it's been issued outside Poland. CD rip. If someone's ready to spend £38 or more (I bought it much cheaper long ago) on the CD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0006NLIZC/ref=tmm_acd_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=&sr= mozes 1 Link to comment

sphinxsix
The Japanese version of the CD (that I personally prefer) is substantially different from the European/American one. Brian Bromberg demoes some basses playing to his own cover of "Voodoo Child" (no guitars, BB plays all the basses). BacHolz 1 Link to comment
sphinxsix
Remember listening to this album (cassette) for the first time in my car on my way to the Netherlands years ago. I laughed out loud so much while driving and listening to it that I'm pretty sure this wasn't the safest drive in my life. Ended well anyway. BTW IMO this drawing is quite cool. Link to comment
