Richter was my first love, Hewitt (as usual with Bach) has done two great recordings, and Schiff‘s earlier recording is also worth checking out.

BIS's original standalone release (single disc, before being included as part of that excellent boxed set pictured in WAM's post) of the Sibelius violin concerto played by Kavakos includes the original version of the concerto as well as the familiar revised one, which made it much more interesting for me.

 

In the revised version, competition is rather stiff, since the field is led by what I consider Jascha Heifetz's finest recording, in excellent dynamic sound on the Living Stereo Hybrid SACD release.  Other great interpretations include Christian Ferras on CD with Karajan, and on video with a young Zubin Mehta (I have the DVD), Gil Shaham, and I also like Viktoria Mullova's recording.  It was her first CD, coupled with the Tchaikovsky violin concerto.  A fitting first recording, as she had won both the International Tchaikovsky Competition (violin category, obviously lol) and the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition!  She defected from the Soviet Union shortly after--I still remember how exciting the news was at the time!  I guess defections are mostly forgotten now.

 

I was fortunate to listen to Kavakos play the Sibelius VC live.

This was my test album, to see how good a restoration I could get to digitally.  Haven't quite got it exactly where I want it, but that is probably because I stop working and start listening to it. It still sounds better on the turntable than digital, but I think the album just needs a better cleaning than I can give it. Maybe with a pressure washer. (grin - just kidding!) 

 

Can't find a version of this online to compare with, but it is a lot of fun if you can find it.
