Yeah, I have that Dvorak, too. I've seen him play all three of those major orchestral pieces in concert. It's one thing to listen to him, but it's another to watch him do it!

A fortunate fellow, I love guitar recitals. In my search to learn more of this artist, I saw him perform on YouTube. Of course not to compare the two but I have found that YouTube, so often mindlessly inane, can be a helpful resource in discovering new music.

YouTube, the friend of the shut-in in the digital age. jk...

Thanks for his, I've enjoyed their earlier work. This seems to be an early and somewhat limited release here at this time. I love the cover art.

If that doesn't stretch your sense of what a guitarist should attempt, there is the Dvorâk Symphony No. 9, Op.95 "From the New World".

An exciting new discovery:

I'd been wavering on this one - thanks for the push, there's my Sunday morning listening sorted ;)

Have you had a listen to this?

I know there a lot of Mozart Horn Concerto recordings out there ;) but something quite nice about this one. Doesn't displace my all-time favorite (Barry Tuckwell's 1972 release with Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields), but a very nice modern alternative, very well recorded and very well played.

I started with No.3 on this new release. Predictably, she's volatile and dramatic, but also plays some ravishing pianissimos. The outer movements are a bit faster than I'm used to, but they work for me. Good sound; however, the tympani and bass drum are a bit feeble.

I see that posting the text after the image works better!

Listening to both concertos now. Quite enjoyable actually. Maybe not a new reference but certainly not boring.

Speaking of ravishing pianissimo, check out the Mazurka in A minor, Op. 17/4 at the end. Wow... Got ticket to see her this coming December. Looking forward to that.

I have an autographed copy after seeing her live two years ago! She's very exciting, but she can get messy in the heat of the moment. Still, she's quite an artist, so enjoy!

@sedest:I have the original cd's covers are different. Are these the same with a bunch of 'one hit wonders' like 'dirty water' by the standels and 'i had too much to dream last night' and bunch of other pyschodelia?

Expanded Rhino editions (1998 & 2001). Lots of psychedelic goodies, 227 tracks in total.

Both his compositions and improvisations develop so naturally, effortlessly..

I love the way this thread leads me to new music and helps me rediscover music in my collection that has slipped off the radar.

Agreed - quite dynamic, but also lovely. One of the best I've heard.

Another in the series with Niklas Eklund. I believe this is the last of five and I'll collect them all in time. As was noted earlier in the thread, the musicianship and sound quality are excellent at a very fair price.

"Art of the Baroque Trumpet, Vol. 5: An Italian Concert"

From Wikipedia...

"In 1996, Eklund won first prize at the first Altenburg International Baroque Trumpet competition, held in Bad Säckingen, Germany. As a specialist on the notoriously difficult baroque trumpet, he demonstrates exceptional interpretive skill coupled with a high degree of control and precision.

Christopher Martin, Principal Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, says: 'Niklas Eklund's Art of the Baroque Trumpet series [on Naxos], is the most lyrically gorgeous trumpet playing you'll ever hear.'"
