Symphonies 1 & 2 are fully in the tuneful Romantic symphony tradition. It's with No. 3 that he becomes more enigmatic, though I'd never say outwardly cerebral. I'd skip to 5 and 6 and then come back to 4, 7 and 3. Wow - my path would be totally different! I found 1 and 7 took me the longest to fall in love with. I think my order was 2, 5, 3, 6, 4. Go figure. My Audio Setup Link to comment
Popular Post austinpop
I love Haydn’s Late symphonies, say 88 onwards. I admit I haven’t explored much below that. My absolute favorite work by Haydn is Die Schöpfung (The Creation). Any nonsense about boring and inept are swept away by the grandeur and beauty of this piece. Of the several recordings I own, this is my all time favorite: AnotherSpin and Guidof 2 My Audio Setup Link to comment

I was just going to post that the Boston Baroque on Linn is my favorite high-resolution recording! Stellar SQ, and the singing is lovely too, if not quite up to the level of the Gardiner. austinpop
Yesterday I was listening to a version of Mahler 4th I hadn't listened to in a long while: At the end of the last movement, Sehr Behaglich, after I reconstituted myself from the puddle Kiri Te Kanawa had melted me into, I felt compelled to listen to the same movement from all the other versions I own, including one I've bookmarked on Tidal. These were: (this one onTidal). I still find the SFS/MTT the best recording and SQ, but from a singing perspective on Sehr Behaglich, I was won over by Genia Kühmeier on the Gergiev/Munich. rando 1 My Audio Setup Link to comment
Popular Post austinpop
Per @Jud's recommendation, enjoying this in DSD. Jud, as you mentioned on another thread, the later concertos seem to be particularly inspired. I agree with you there. In fact, for concertos 1-3, I think this one is still my favorite: graham and Jud 2 My Audio Setup Link to comment

If anyone else looks, it's only available in Redbook and mp3. Chandos was the cheapest I saw it. Thanks for anticipating the question! I found it on Tidal, so will listen there initially before deciding to buy. My Audio Setup Link to comment
Popular Post austinpop
The next in Dausgaard's Brahms cycle. I'm a huge fan. This recording of the 3rd is as satisfying as the 1st and 2nd that he's already released. A no-brainer at eClassical's intro price. Plus it's available at the native recording sample rate: 24/96. Move over Kleiber, Karajan, and the old guard! Dausgaard and Andris Nelson's Brahms cycles are fresh exciting readings, with the benefit of outstanding sound quality. graham and Musicophile 2 My Audio Setup Link to comment

Popular Post austinpop
https://open.qobuz.com/album/0747313238026 This may well be my new favorite Creation! Incredible recording quality, and a performance to match. Of the three soloists, Sunhae Im (soprano) may be the weakest link, but even so, this is an outstanding performance. Background: I just got access to Qobuz, and I've been like a kid in a candy store ever since. I've been focussing on high-resolution content, and this one came up in one of my searches. Qobuz has it at 24/44.1, although I gather it was also released as an SACD, so may be available as DSD too. rando, Jud and AnotherSpin 2 1 My Audio Setup Link to comment
