Well, I went with this this evening - started with #1 and expected to move on and "browse" but it became the music of the evening. Tidal says released in 1997 but they recorded in the 80's right? Recording seems a little bright...

I had to dig out my boxed set to look at the notes. Yes, recorded from 1983 to 1989. Since I got the set out, figured I might as well listen to No. 3 haha! It's hard to say if it's that the recording itself is overly bright or if it's simply because timbres of these period instruments make it seem that way by comparison to a larger, modern instrument orchestra. Perhaps a bit of both. Okay, after a bit more listening, the recorded sound could be better haha!

I think the BIS set with Vänskä is far superior sonically, but I prefer Hogwood and company's interpretations, and the sonics of this set don't detract much from my enjoyment.
