rando
Dug a little deeper in the archives this evening for some excitement. Link to comment
rando
A Japanese sourced 'tester' album of possibly the oldest percussion instrument. One of the few instruments overall that can still be hand built from natural materials grown and subsequently constructed by yourself with no loss of SQ. Link to comment
rando
It's getting to be the season you can't go anywhere without people singing. Ringing bells even more so. This one came as a bit of a surprise and I'm not sure I'd ever listened to it before. To say Mr. McFerrin's stint with the SPCO was under attended would be stating a fact. I could suppose it was parts aversion to rock operas and jazz suites. For all I know any number of the internationally known cadre in the immediate area could have fostered his posting over a politically popular rival. The conductor on my second album choice for instance. Back to the work itself, he conducts and performs. Performs with his voice in place of a number of instruments. The liner notes hint this was a personal work aimed at children of all ages. Refreshing and deeper musical interpretation than it would appear. Maestro Skrowaczewski (93) suffered a stroke last Sunday evening and was forced to remove himself from the podium at four concerts with the Dallas Symphony this weekend. Link to comment
rando
On the off chance my 16th of December grows crowded I'm celebrating 101 years of Георгий Свиридов (Georgy Sviridov) this afternoon. To recover from what felt like 101 hours of eating. Link to comment
rando
I am a self confessed fan of the lute and yes, the sound was marvelous and nothing like what can be captured in a YouTube video. I am fond of the harpsichord but rarely can I listen at length without fatigue. It can't just be the limited tonality of the harpsichord as I can listen tp lute music for hours. Something to due with the "brightness" and the sharp attack and decay qualities of the instrument. I had basically the same reaction until listening to any of the Caro Mitis "Harpsichord Gems" series. As much as I have reservations about the auto-tune level of misinformation portrayed in modern remasters and recordings. It does reward the listener occasionally. For the price of admission you can get the best seats not just a good seat. On that note... Link to comment
rando
Wow, I don't care how deep into the 90's that album cover was conceived. I'm sure the musical side is just fine but highlighter green and orange with mint? This struck a very good middleground this evening. Celebratory without being overtly disruptive to relaxing. rando
My listening has been a little Shostakovich rich lately. Going to try Jud's Elgar recommendation this evening. Link to comment
rando
DG isn't always synonymous with SQ or spelling of this level. I was fairly well blown away on first listen. Link to comment
rando
Finally found some time to watch the Elbphilharmonie opening gala concert last night. Maybe it was the late hour but I was having a hard time sitting through at least one of the works with full orchestra. Atonal or polyrhythmic works don't always hit that spot for me, but the first disc off this set proved quite enjoyable this evening. Link to comment
rando
That explains a lot. I'm very glad no DG engineer was able to multimike these great recordings to death. I noted a lack of this and humorously the Pollini 75 album typo. After reading the new comments today I tracked down this behind the scenes story about the BSO recording process. Link to comment
rando
Much jiggery pokery and digital addery. Much more than mixing three live performance together on that modern BSO recording. Maybe Tupac lended some new backing vocals in there somewhere as an Easter egg. Link to comment
rando
Got a wild hair to go hunt through the stacks at thrift shops for some discs further off the beaten path than I normally venture. A fair number of these budget discs are new recordings providing an escape from the labels relisting of old materials refreshed yet again under a different guise. Some even capturing decent SQ and performance. This was time enjoyably spent discovering a new conductor and underemployed players. Which is the real draw in this category. rando
Thinking I got off light after bringing up thrift store finds. In rebuttal to the one person who didn't let me off easy, tested my ability to hold onto dinner after another whiff of the unwashed bear. Albeit one gently lazing in a field of flowers within earshot of gently lapping waves. Link to comment
rando
I gave these Dawn Upshaw discs another spin this evening. Excepting the last one which came from my second attempt at digging through a thrift shop and will probably never get spun by me again. Link to comment
rando
Continuing my, oh there's a fancy word in vogue for this, upcycled(?) works rescued from certain destruction. These two were by far the best finds. Sinfonias Espanolas - Concerto Koln Minnesota Orchestra Showcase - Eiji Oue Link to comment
Popular Post rando
Intermittently been chasing down an interest in Polish piano music the last half year. Discovering Chopin's "Polish Songs" being among the high points. I accidentally came across this album on ebay searching for bike parts, a Shimano Dura-Ace cassette. Popular Post rando
By some stroke of luck I ended up finding Naive's new home at Believe appears to be a fruitful one. For one they have, primarily through Amazon, collected the larger part of "The Vivaldi Edition" into very charitably priced box sets (6 discs for $25! on the low end, 30 discs of opera closer to $240.) Secondly they are back to releasing new discs and very charitably offer a full live performance of Rinaldo Alessandrini leading the Concerto Italiano in their new Monterverdi recording at the Caserta palace, "Night. Stories Of Lovers And Warriors" Well worth clicking through to arte.tv for the hour long performance in my opinion. christopher3393 and accwai 2 Link to comment
rando
It isn't too far fetched a) the project will continue now, b) all of the Vivaldi Edition discs will be released in box sets. My hope is along with staging the operas Believe will embrace audiophile quality downloads Of 24 total views on Allesandrini's youtube page for this album I probably accounted for 21. Even before the bankruptcy this was a small batch OOP disk going for high prices if you could find it. I'm still shocked they put it in a box set. Of everything I've listened to in the last few days this one sticks with me as the most enjoyable. The Tchaikovsky on Eloquence upstream is very much of the same category of music that rarely lands in my playlists. Spring weather really has been that nice recently. Musicophile 1 Link to comment
rando
Two recently acquired Telarc discs. Turina/Debussy had been on my list for awhile and didn't disappoint. Link to comment
rando
More classic Telarc. This might be the end of my CD collecting as putting on the Moser/Hrůša "Dvořák & Lalo Cello Concertos" in high res directly following produced a staggering increase in SQ. Link to comment
