Thanks @duxservit, Roch Try some of Bobby Hutcherson's albums with Harold Land, like "San Francisco", for a real treat. His passing, a year ago, was a true loss to jazz. elcorso 1 Link to comment

Thanks for posting this. It's been a long time since I've played it. I've obviously been wasting my time. Link to comment
ronfint
I've seen several posts about Tsuyoshi Yamamoto albums. My favorite, by far, is 'Blues for Tee'. 89reksal 1 Link to comment
ronfint
One of my favorites -- Tchangodei, Mal Waldron, and Archie Shepp: Three for Freedom. This was my introduction to Tchangodei. The first cut is a gorgeous version of Mal Waldron's 'The Seagulls of Kristiansund' (for some reason called 'Seagulls of Kristian' on this album). biosailor 1 Link to comment

ronfint
I usually don't think of Barney Wilen as "funky", but wow. Just listen to the first track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZBfWMgVa3w Link to comment

It is other things, including, obviously, a performance and also a social statement in it's superior implementations, but not music. JC I saw Robert Glasper last week at the North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam, by the way). His playing was wonderful and in direct contradiction to your statement. In one of his appearances he performed with Yasiin Bey. Link to comment

He has been nominated for 7 Grammy Awards" He clearly does not appear to be associated in any way with rap. JC Take a look at Black Radio and Black Radio 2, for example. As I said, he performed in Rotterdam with Yasiin Bey (Mos Def). Much of what Glasper plays is the reworking of rap songs — like the version of “I’m Dying of Thirst” that I posted. Link to comment

Popular Post ronfint
It's morning, not evening where I live, but I'm celebrating the fact that Tidal has just added two true classics. The first is the obscure, but absolutely great Topology / Makoto Terashita and Harold Land This has just been reissued by BBE Music. I found it on Bandcamp, and I'll be buying it later today. Up to now the only way to hear it was from posted vinyl rips. By the way, the LP sells for a small fortune. The first track, “Dragon Dance” is fabulous. The other album is Rhythm of Life / James Mason This is a soul jazz classic. It's been reissued before (I think my cd is from 2000). Both these albums are worth at least a listen if you’re a jazz fan. AudioDoctor, WAM and elcorso 1 2 Link to comment
ronfint
Here is another new release which I think is worth listening to. Don't Buy Ivory Anymore! The Music of Henri Texier / Palm Unit The bass line put down on this album is really great. It can be found on Bandcamp, Tidal, and Qobuz. Link to comment

Here's another from the series that I like Le Temps Fou - The Music of Marion Brown / Jonathan Jurion Also, I'm looking forward to the release in two weeks of Timbuktu - The Music of Randy Weston / Cheick Tidiane Seck It promises to be my favorite yet. ronfint
A Randy Weston afternoon. I was fortunate to see him perform at the Detroit Jazz Fest in 2016 (at age 90 !). He unfortunately passed away two years later. And a great tribute album by Cheick Tidiane Seck: ‘Timbuktu — The Music of Randy Weston’. Link to comment

ronfint
How to categorize this music? It's a mixture of afro-beat and progressive jazz, but the recipe surely goes much deeper. I wish that they were still playing together. Link to comment

ronfint
Keith Jarrett / Back Hand (1974) OK, of course Keith Jarrett is one of the great jazz pianists of all time, but I find a lot of his albums soporific. (I know, my taste is lacking.) For example, within five minutes of dropping the needle (figuratively) on ‘Koln Concert’, I find myself reading op eds in the NY Times or Wash Post. But this album is something very different — it’s exciting. I came upon it while browsing ‘Jazz Beat’ in the Steve Hoffman forums. Along with Jarrett are Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Guilherme Franco (percussion). This is music worth listening to. Guidof 1 Link to comment
