Hello,

I've recently stopped at this one masterpiece: Ivan Fischer, Budapest Festival Orchestra - Mahler Symphony no. 4 - Channel Classics Records. To me it is very accessible as for Mahler, yet very good sonically. What do you think?

Generally, the interpretation is really nice, and with the obvious brilliant Channel Classics sound. The only weak point to me is the soprano, Miah Persson, in the last movement.

Mahler 4, together with 1, are the most accessible Mahler symphonies in my opinion.

In case of Mahler 1, what do you recommend? I like the sound of Channel Classics, much better than LSO Live for instance.

Some other Mahler 4 you might look at the old George Szell version on Sony/Columbia or the Haitink on Phillips. I don't know if either of these is available as a download though and would be rebook quality. Still the SQ on both is more that adequate and they are my two favorite performances. Not to take anything away from the Channel Classic though.

Not sure which LSO Mahler 1 your referred to. If it is Gergiev I would agree. There are so many out there I would have a problem recommending one. I have 10 versions of it now. The Channel Classic is quite good, but there are some others I like better such as the Eschenbach version from HDTT which is my current favorite.

Yes, it's Giergiev 4th. Don't like it, MUCH better is the one from BFO conducted by Ivan Fisher. Sonically as well.

Two beautiful romantic string concerts today, that are excellent both sonically and for the interpretation:

Dvorak: Cello concertos - Steven Isserlis

Both highly recommended.

Listened a little over the Qobuz and I am really enjoying it - they have it in high resolution format as well. Seems to be another wallet opening again ;-)

You can also get it at Hyperion directly. Not a huge price difference between GBP 12 and EUR15, but you can buy pieces of the album, e.g. only the main oeuvre op. 104 for GBP 7.50. I'm not saying the rest of the album is not interesting, but most of the times I'll be listening to that part only. The second concerto is a piece from Dvoraks youth that he didnt' even orchestrate himself. I find it more of academic interest, although it has some beautiful melodies.

Dvorák: Cello Concertos - CDA67917 - Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

Thanks for the suggestion Musicophile. Anything outstanding from Hyperion you may recommend as well?

Sorry to everybody else for the OT:

Guidof posted this recently, with Isserlis again and it is on my to buy list:

Beethoven: Cello Sonatas - CDA67981/2 - Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

There's a free download track that sounds really good.

Isserlis another time with Bach: one of my favorite versions of the Cello Suites:

Bach: Cello Suites - CDA67541/2 - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

Very funky format with 20 bit, I have redbook only.

Another pretty safe bet on Hyperion is Angela Hewitt. She's well known for her Bach, but I can also recommend some others:

http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDA67306&vw=dc

Bach: The Well-tempered Clavier - CDA67741/4 - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

Fauré: Piano Music - CDA67875 - Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

Handel & Haydn: Angela Hewitt plays Handel & Haydn - CDA67736 - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

Finally, the Takazs Quartet has done some amazing stuff, e.g.

Schubert: String Quintet & String Quartet D956 & 703 - CDA67864 - Franz Schubert (1797-1828) - Hyperion Records - MP3 and Lossless downloads

There's much more. Hyperion is really a label that cares about music. Furthermore, their recordings usually sound really nice.

Back to topic:

On this, let me take a coffee break from work and listen to this, again from Hyperion:

Brahms: Complete Piano Trios - Trio Wanderer

Oh man!!! Thank you so much, and I think this will be kind of guide for any future Hyperion recordings buyers! Thanks a lot for your time again.

In memoriam Claudio Abbado: his recording of Berg and Beethoven's violin concertos with Isabelle Faust and Orchestra Mozart, downloaded in excellent high-res sound from Qobuz.
