Iving
Shouldn't have got to p.3 of such a Thread as this without featuring Dave Hum RIP of The Huckleberries. This is my favourite studio track (Speed The Plough/Mason's Apron from 'Jigweed', 1998). If the Thread continues there'll be plenty more showcasing Dave Hum. I first saw The Huckleberries in the street in Bath. Stopped to watch as long as I could. Here's Dave Hum/Huckleberries entertaining a happy young crowd in Oxford, 2008: Some nasty people try to stifle street music in the UK. My friend Jonny Walker RIP founded Keep Streets Live to counter that sort of thing. Here he is supported by notables inc. Billy Bragg and Bill Bailey: christopher3393 1 Link to comment

Popular Post christopher3393
From Orange County California, high school classmates, The Chantays, "Pipeline", 1962, their first recording and only hit. It was inspire by a surfing movie showing scenes of the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii: More wholesome than Wonder Bread, the boys were the only "rock and roll band" ever to appear on the Lawrence Welk show 😜 Welk like the song so much that he recorded it with his orchestra, converting it instantly to elevator music: Over a dozen covers were recorded in "63, often by aspiring surf rock bands, and often with little or no audible inspiration. The Ventures cover might be an exception: Additional noteworthy covers (out of well over 100) Takeshi Terauchi & His Blue Jeans - "Pipeline", 1964: "Pipeline" - Flash Cadillac and The Continental Kids, 1972 "Pipeline" - Johnny Thunders, 1978 Johnny Thunder's Live version: The BEST Southern California surf punks: "Pipeline" - Agent Orange, 1981 "Pipeline" - The Raymen, 1986 (German rockabilly band, particularly percussive version) "Pipeline" · Anthrax, '89 (gives it a speed metal feel) "Pipeline" · Pat Metheny, 2011 Pipeline · Bill Frisell, 2014 Bill Frisell, live version: "Pipeline" · Nokie Edwards and The Light Crust Doughboys, 2020 Confused and Iving 2 Link to comment

Agree not many worthy covers - I like Johnny Thunders' Live version and there's something about Pat Metheny's acoustic rendition. Quite like Nokie too! Link to comment

I'm keen to see any "Lonesome Boatman" as per OP! Here's the same Dropkick Murphys track I *can* see in UK. imo "The Lonesome Boatman" of its intrinsic nature is nothing if not plaintive. The best renditions I have heard are solo whistle. Then it evokes extreme feeling and longing. This Dropkick is one hell of an attack on it! Dropkick about the right word I'd say [Rugby Union refers.] christopher3393 1 Link to comment
Iving
America - The Nice Live on TV's "How It is" 1968 imo All the best pop music: 1. Sits in the vinyl window mid-50s (Rockabilly explosion) to 1980-ish (ended with Punk); 2. Curious peaks at 1968 and 1973 - so many examples. christopher3393 1 Link to comment
