Introducing SMQA (SoX resampling for Tidal HiFi/Master)

We have a lot of customers that use Tidal via the MPD/DLNA output protocol on Sonic Orbiter OS running on a Rendu. Some are using the mConnect mobile app to stream their local content and some are streaming from Tidal directly. As you know...Tidal now has selectable quality modes named "HiFi" and "Master" with HiFi being 16bit 44.1kHz and Master being a mix of 24bit 44.1kHz and 24bit 48kHz. In order to giver our customers better experience with the Tidal "HiFi" and "Master" content we have implemented a proprietary protocol called SMQA. WTF is SMQA...it's Sonore Master Quality Alternative. SMQA is an alternative way to play the Tidal "HiFi" and "Master" content without MQA decoding. The SMQA protocol uses SoX (the Swiss Army knife of sound processing programs) to up-sample and apply very high quality filters to the Tidal "HiFi" and "Master" content in real time during streaming. 

 

Why are we doing this? Because we think you will like the sound much better.

Notes: 

1. This project is Beta and may not be officially added to Sonic Orbiter OS.   

2. Sonore is not associated with MQA Ltd and MQA is copyright, owned, and licensed by MQA Ltd.

3. A Rendu running SO v2.8 will be required for beta testing.

4. Adding this feature for beta testing will not harm your Rendu and it is completely reversible on the fly.

Any chance of enabling SoX upsampling for all DLNA inputs (JRiver)? Including SoX sample rates (input and target, maybe in a table format like JRiver), and SoX parameters (phase response, pass band %, stop band % and attenuation)?

 

For example: foobar2000 has a free DSP called Resamper-V with a GUI to visualize those settings. If not the graphs, at least enable the user to tweak the parameters.

 

PS: if I were you I would avoid MQA controversy and just call is "SoX upsampling".

This SoX digital signal processing will work with any DLNA/UPnP playback on the Rendu. However, this is more a fun project than a serious attempt to add DSP to Sonic Orbiter OS. Remember the Rendu series is based on a low power CPU and it may not be able to do all that you want. Anyway, this DSP configuration is specifically setup for the 16bit 44.1kHz, 24bit 44.1kHz, and 24bit 48kHz content.

The following outputs are available / user selectable:

 

1. No DSP or bit perfect playback. Default recommended for bit perfect playback of any bitrate / sample rate.

2. SoX DSP filter= Very high quality, steep, 32 bit floating point precision, minimum phase response, resampled content to 88.2kHz. Recommended for 16bit 44.1kHz content (Redbook CD / Tidal "HiFi") or 24bit 44.1kHz content (Tidal "Master").

3. SoX DSP filter = Very high quality, steep, 32 bit floating point precision, minimum phase response, resampled content to 96kHz. Recommended for 24bit 48kHz content (Tidal "Master").
