Right, it is way better (IMO, DSD is a superior format to any kind of PCM, generally, it is worth it (again IMO) for example to convert all data rates to DSD via HQPlayer before conversion)... Point being is that the Bricasti M21 and M3 DACs use a discrete, single bit, converter for DSD with no DSP of any kind applied to the incoming data stream. Hence it is NOS for DSD input. For example, if one just inputs a DSD recording at any rate from DSD 64 to DSD 256, then it is NOS, the recording is converted at its native data rate with no manipulation. It is a separate concern from the DAC if one chooses to apply oversampling in software. Of course that is not the same as PCM, and I never suggested that. The Bricasti M21 has a couple of R2R chips for PCM conversion, but they do use the proprietary oversampling running in the SHARC DSP of the DAC, and there is no way to run this R2R DAC as NOS, as there is no bypass of the OSF available. semente and luisma 1 1 SO/ROON/HQPe: DSD 512-Sonore opticalModuleDeluxe-Signature Rendu optical with Well Tempered Clock--DIY DSC-2 DAC with SC Pure Clock--DIY Purifi Amplifier-Focus Audio FS888 speakers-JL E 112 sub-Nordost Tyr USB, DIY EventHorizon AC cables, Iconoclast XLR & speaker cables, Synergistic Purple Fuses, Spacetime system clarifiers. idiot_savant
This is interesting - do they adjust the analogue filter for the various DSD rates? your friendly neighbourhood idiot Link to comment

Usually more than PCM DACs do. Since typical DSD conversion section is clock rate dependent analog filter. Whereas PCM conversion section doesn't include filtering. Then typically in either case, following the conversion section is normal analog low-pass filter. Signalyst - Developer of HQPlayer Pulse & Fidelity - Software Defined Amplifiers Link to comment
mevdinc
Sorry if someone's else already shared this. Michaele Lavorgna (Twittering Machines) in his PONTUS II review refers @GoldenOne 's review of ARES II and Denafris DACs not being non-oversampling. Apparently, the response of Denafrips (through their distributor) was; “…the NOS is indeed non-oversampling. But non-oversampling doesn’t mean the digital signals are not processed.” mevdinc.com (My autobiography) Recently sold my ATC EL 150 Actives! Link to comment

Kind of like asking if coffee with sugar already added is coffee…it’s not pure NOS because of the aggressive linear interpolation. Popular Post numlog
linear interpolation is OS, it more like the packet saying coffee but there is tea inside. it can be seen in the high sample rate capture of the NOS mode output here: each 'step' in the waveform is a sample, 31 new ones for each original 44.1kHz sample i.e OS GoldenOne and Exocer 1 1 Link to comment
