Roon - Security update information for Windows 7 / 8 users

Security update The security technologies on which the internet depends are always evolving. One of the most important and widely used of these technologies is called Transport Layer Security (TLS), and it’s responsible for keeping communication between web browsers and servers (among many other applications) secure. TLS 1.0 was introduced in 1999 and the current version (TLS 1.3) was released in 2018. Microsoft has announced that support has ended for Windows 7 and will end soon for Windows 8. This is standard industry practice, but it can have consequences for users of those operating systems. Significantly, TLS support will no longer be updated, creating potential security vulnerabilities that could impact end users and content publishers alike.   On the 31st of May, we will be performing a security update to ensure that Roon continues to run smoothly and securely; this update will prevent operating systems limited to TLS 1.0 or 1.1 from accessing Roon’s cloud services. If you are using devices running Windows 7 or Windows 8 as part of your Roon system, you will need to take action.   What should you do? To continue using Roon from May 31, your operating systems must support TLS 1.2 at a minimum. It may be possible to update TLS under Windows 7 and 8 following the instructions in articles like this one. Alternatively, you could upgrade your operating system to Windows 10 to remain secure, or migrate to a new Roon Core device with these instructions: Roon Core Migration.   We are contacting Roon subscribers we believe will be affected by this update.   If you have any questions, please get in touch.
