Afterdark Master Clock for Uptone EtherRegen

Recommended Posts

Do others that have ordered their Afterdark 75ohm squarewave clock plan to use the stock BNC cable?  Does anyone know any details about the stock cable?  Does anyone have any experiences to share regarding the stock cable vs aftermarket cables?  If I decide to order an aftermarket 75 ohm cable, does anyone know if cable length matters?  I've been into digital separates (transports and DACs) for almost 30 years and I recall that a cable length of 1.2-1.5m was best to reduce internal reflections.   Would that still be the case in connecting my ER to the OCXO clock?  I'm newbie in regards to use of external clocks so I'm sorry if I'm asking questions that have been answered many times over.

Most of us use 30 cm

There is more information in the EtherRegen clock tread.

I expect the cable supplied with AfterDark clock will serve you well enough. You may ask him for a shorter length than the standard 1 meter that’s ships with that specific offer.

I noticed that even several of you here at AS has bought a AfterDark clock, no one has yet posted in the tread listening impressions

Not even @ambre

This is quite unusual I would say. At least compared to how we’re used to people posting about every new John S product released the last 4 years.
As well as the cheap AliExpress clock.

I don't understand your connection: "to plug use etherregen backwards"? what does that mean?
For my part, I will connect my Clock and my ER on my JS2 both in 12 Volts.
Is there another recommendation?

Yes so they say this will be a problem and trust me I am no expert at all and I might even be wrong.

That said when you use the JS-2 to power both eR and the Clock or a server that feeds into the eR they say the JS-2 for its 2 power rails only has one ground. It shares this ground and this will have a negative effect on eR's moat protection. They say if you turn it around a/b to b/a it helps with that.

What does this mean and why? Not sure.

I get the 2 rails and the one ground and the eR shunts junk to the ground and the ground and leakage and all that good stuff is important. Hopefully someone way smarter than me with regards to this subject jumps in and gives us both a clearer description but think you need to look into this a bit further so you get best SQ you can.

So I was not using the JS-2 on my eR because I was already using one rail on my sonicTransporter I5 and I was happy with the SQ and just using the oem supply until finally last night my Wyred 4 Sound PS-1 with 4 power rails came in via FedEx.

I was psyched and when I plugged that in to power my eRegen I got a very nice jump up in SQ.

I am psyched at how much better it is. Honestly, guys I have not heard anyone speak about the W4S PS-1 LPS. It is brilliant. I like it better than the JS-2 for what its worth. Folks should try it. So nice to have 4 LPS under one roof also and it is no small box either. It is heave and very well built unit that sound great. Very happy with this buy.

Hope this helps a little until someone else can add better info. This is all kind of new to me but I am happy with how my rig is coming along.

Thanks

Due to my needing to hide mine away out of sight I need to use a longer cable than is ideal so I've a 1.5m copy Nordost Odin 2 75ohm BNC cable coming.  I don't much care for the branding though user reviews indicate they're something special and I like the build. Each wire being individually shielded is something appeals to me and should make a difference.

I'll be hiding mine behind my second power amp as it will be out of sight from my wife and it cannot be knocked or bumped in that location.

If I can get away with a shorter cable I will.

That's great. But just FYI, as with the UpTone JS-2, the Wyrd4Sound power supply has common -VE/0-volt "grounds" between all of it output rails.  One transformer secondary, one set of diodes for the whole supply--so shared "ground."

Not a big deal, just keep it in mind when using such supplies to power devices that are on opposite sides of an isolator (such as EtherREGEN A>B moat, or ISO REGEN).

Cheers,

Hi Alex ,

synthesis :

powering an EtherREGEN and an B side device ( clock for exemple ou streamer ) from the same JS-2 is not good ?

powering an EtherREGEN and an A side device from the same JS2 is fine ?

merci

I actually switched them around and tried powering the eR with the JS-2. I had not tried that yet as I was powering the eR with oem supply and was using JS-2 for sonicTransporter and sure enough I like the JS-2 even better then the PS-1.

I am surprised how much of an improvement I’m getting from using excellent LPS with eR. I could not tell any difference between the two LPS with powering the sonicTransporter but definitely with eR. So right now I’m only using one rail from JS-2 and one from PS-1.

Can I used other rails for other things as long as those things are not plugged into eR? I don’t want to lose the great sound I have but that’s 4 rails of excellent clean power I would like to use for other stuff too if I can without messing up the grounds? Thanks

@Superdad Out of curiosity, if I were to use a JS2 to power my Mytek Brooklyn DAC+, would it be bad to use the other rail to power either a LPS-2 that powers my ISORegen?
How about the other rail to power an EtherRegen?
I have actually been planning on getting a JS2 for my Mytek and I was thinking I could make use of the other rail for one of these purposes?
I don’t yet have an EtherRegen, but was thinking of maybe getting one at same time as the JS2.
Seems like an additional LPS-2 would be better for the EtherRegen than using a second rail of a JS2 based upon your statement?

I received my Afterdark Clock yesterday for France.
Neat and fast packaging. Thank you Adrien.

So I have the Queen - Square Wave version in 75 Ohm. The supplied cable is not red but black on the photo on the site. I do not know if it is the same quality of cable as that in 50 ohm.

The Clock has been burning since last night. It turned all night and all day

It's all new to me in my quest for a better experience.
Music seems less "metallic" or "tiring"

There is a sheet stuck under the clock, I don't know what it's for. Maybe for interference.

So I switched to the ER in external Clock mode.
I don't technically know how it works. The afterDark resynchronizes the internal clock of the ER? or it purely replaces the origin?
I have not had the experience of switching to external Clock mode without putting the BNC cable. Does a sound come out? :)
What is disturbing is that there is no indicator light.

No indicator light is not good.... Not 100% certain but I believe the external clock bypasses the internal eR crystek clock.

Hi! MasterWarzombie,

Thanks for your feedback. We are quite confident the Giesemann Clock will improve your EtherREGEN day by day. The Giesemann Clock will open up with huge soundstage and music will be much smoother after 7days. The external clock will bypass the internal clock on the EtherREGEN, so it makes a differences.

For use Giesemann Clock in EtherREGEN, unplug all the power on Giesemann and EtherREGEN.

  1. Switch EtherREGEN from INT to EXT position
  2. Plug in the BNC cable from Giesemann Clock cable to EtherREGEN
  3. Power on the Giesemann Clock first.
  4. Then, EtherREGEN will boot to EXT firmware and use the external clock as reference from Giesemann 10M Master clock signal
  5. The EtherREGEN will work plug and play

For the unplug of BNC Cable from Giesemann clock, we suggested to turn off the Giesemann and EtherREGEN first, it is for safety reason.

The audiophilestyle.com group buy will come with 1 meters of BNC clock cables:  1) For 75ohm version will be in Black Belden  2) For 50ohm will issue with Red HUBER.

Please let the Giesemann Clock burn in and power non-stop. The improvement is rewarding. We would be really appreciated if you could share some of the impression later on.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Adrian

I have two final questions.

1- The process of Burning the clock only involves keeping the clock on and the etherregen on or it involves "running the music"

2 - What happens if we cut off the power supply, the clock burn is "canceled" and this long process must be repeated?

I have the possibility of having these two BNC cables for tweak:

https://www.nordost.com/leif/blue-heaven/blue-heaven-digital-interconnect.php

or

are these good choices?

Hi! MasterWarzombie,

Thanks for your questions.

1 - The process of "Giesemann Burn-In" is to keep the Giesemann Clock turn on all the time, 1day -> 7days -> 15days -> 35days to reach optimal status. So, we suggest the Giesemann Clock is turn on all time.

2 - Once the power is off, the Giesemann clock will be initialised, so the burn in will start over again.

We have excellent BNC 75ohm Clock cable which is recommended and have good feedback from customer who have Giesemann Clock.

AfterDark. Project ClayX Black River Clock Cable is very transparent, full body with details. We can guarantee this is one of the best 75ohm cable BNC Clock cable which can refine all the signals from Giesemann Clock.

Whenever I burn in a component, I run a signal through it (not just powered on).  You can do this by just having your streaming device play music on repeat 24/7.  You don't need to have your amp on while you're burning the clock in.  I'll be doing this exact process when I receive my AfterDark clock.  At the same time that I'm burning in the clock, I'll also be burning in a new Paul Hynes SR4T LPS, a new mains power cord, a new DC power cable (Ghent Gotham), and the 75ohm BNC cable.

Thanks for your sharing. May I know if the Giesemann Clock is connected to SoTM switch? How does the sound change when compared? We are quite confident, the improvement after burn-in will be huge.

No

it is connected to my etherregen. In the photo, it is right next to my Sotm switch.
we see the "YELLOW" optical cable on the etherregen.
