Best front end application for a Mac 10.4 OS?

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

Which application (s) do you Macintosh users like to use for your front end on your Macs? The criteria that is most important is fidelity? Are there other programs besides Itunes that a friend of mine can use on his laptop since he is an audiophile?

Next question is about apple lossless vs Flac. Can he use M4a with a bitrate of 1,411 Kbps that will be the same as Flac?

Within Itunes, how can he rip Cds to M4A with a bitrate of 1,411 Kbps?

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Liz

Hi Liz - On OS X there really isn't much competition. iTunes is bit perfect out of the box. I've used Songbird but haven't been able to get it to output a bit perfect stream yet. I think Songbird has the greatest potential, but it is far from prime time readiness.

Apple Lossless is where it's at for compression on the Mac. FLAC support just isn't there in iTunes.

I'm with Chris. Lossless is lossless ad iTunes is good software designed to work seamlessly with Core Audio in OSX. There's really no reason to look elsewhere unless you dislike the iTunes interface. And then there may be a price to pay in quality and integration.

I confess. I\'m an audiophool.

Thanks Chris. My bussy wil luse WAV as he does not like Apple lossless. he deleted a lopt of music that was M4a with a lower bitrate than 1,411 kbps.

I am suggesting to him to use Flac which is not supported in Itunes. I know VLC for the Mac supports flac and something called MacFlac.

I feel since he is a dedicated audiophile, he needs to use a program better suited for him. I use J river media center and that is awesome.

Thanks Chris. I like to listen to music not just HR discs. The music i like is on Read Book CDs, SACDs, XRCds, etc. I find J river to be awesome . What are you using, Monkey Media?

Hi Chris,

I belive you like using MediaMonkey to play higher resolution files? I have SoftSpace Evening Shadows disc which is 24 bit 44.1 khz smaple rate and the bitrate is 2116 6kbps. My AV unit can decode higher bit and it works for these files.

My Dac when i get it wil ahve an 18 bit Analog Devices 1865N Dac chip. I have already inquire if the manufacturer can retrofit a board whith a higher bit Dac in the future and i belibe they wil be able to. Most people i know like yo use 16 bit dacs with no oversampling..

You shoudl hear the Output tubes i wil use once teh Dac goes in. A Quad set of lightly uses Genelex 1969 Gold Monarch , brown plate Kt88 tubes.

Hi starcat - Play certainly is a simple application with an easy interface, but in a way it is similar to using CDs. I don't like to browse for a new song manually. I'd rather use a program like iTunes to see the complete library with cover art etc... Just my opinion. If you and other people prefer Play that's totally cool with me :-)
