MetalNuts
I have the Polarity album for sometime and I have not noticed previously that my ladder DAC showed in the display that it is 23 bits 352Khz instead of 24 bits. I have also the Mephisto album ripped from my CD and it showed on my DAC that it is 17/44. I am wondering where goes the missing bit or where comes the additional bit or my DAC is malfunctioning. AudioDoctor
I have no clue on the 24/352 album, but could the 17th bit on the Mephisto album be the HDCD encoded bit? Just to be clear, I am completely guessing here. No electron left behind. Link to comment
MetalNuts
Searched on internet, it seems that HDCD if properly ripped will show 17 bits or more. I usually turn off the display of my DAC, so I may not have noticed it before and other HDCD may be the same. Still does not understand why the DXD Polarity album is 23 bits. Will see my other DXD or 2L albums tonight if they have the same problem. AudioDoctor 1 MetalNuts Link to comment
danadam
Maybe the DAC is analyzing which bits change between subsequent samples and maybe in that particular recording one bit (most likely the least significant one) always stays the same. Check what this shows: 20bit.flac Link to comment
danadam
Actually, the "Innocence" track from "Polarity" album is available on http://www.2l.no/hires/ and indeed sox shows that the least significant bit is not used: ]$ sox 2L-45_stereo_01_FLAC_352k_24b.flac -n stats Overall Left Right DC offset -0.000001 -0.000001 -0.000001 Min level -0.549987 -0.549987 -0.516935 Max level 0.627561 0.627561 0.520845 Pk lev dB -4.05 -4.05 -5.67 RMS lev dB -25.79 -25.60 -26.00 RMS Pk dB -13.77 -13.77 -15.68 RMS Tr dB -78.15 -78.15 -77.11 Crest factor - 11.96 10.39 Flat factor 0.00 0.00 0.00 Pk count 2 2 2 Bit-depth 23/23 23/23 23/23 <--- HERE Num samples 108M Length s 307.293 Scale max 1.000000 Window s 0.050 You should ask for 1/24 refund 😉 MetalNuts 1 Link to comment

I was not worrying of the use of less one bit but the hidden use of the one bit. MetalNuts Link to comment
MetalNuts
This one also has only 23 bits but claimed to be a 24 bits DXD MetalNuts Link to comment
