JoeWhip
Thanks Chris. Yes, we are back to golfing, with social distancing of course. I only ride in a cart with my wife. Otherwise, I walk. Link to comment

shp
@JoeWhip Spectral has fascinated me for 30 years. I'm curious what you think of the preamp and whether you're ever tempted to switch to one of their amplifiers, especially since the company recommends the pairing so strongly. Thanks Link to comment
Popular Post JoeWhip
This is still a wonderful preamp even though it is so old. I bought it used in the early 90’s from a Spectral dealer. He tried to sell me the latest Spectral at the time so we hooked them up to the Spectral amp If the day and into Vandersteen speakers, as I recall, the big old Model 4. Listened to CD and tape through the line stage and neither of us could tell the difference between the two. The new pre amp had an obviously better phono stage but that wasn’t worth the extra $6,000.00 to me so I grabbed the used pre amp. I have had it cleaned and tweaked by a very competent friend who has worked on Spectral stuff and it sounds as good as when I got it, all these years later. Even the guys at Spectral loved this pre amp and they still have all the parts necessary to service it last time I called a couple of years ago. As for the amps, Spectral makes the best sounding amps I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. A good friend has the latest stereo amp and it is phenomenal. However, at $20,000, that is too rich for my blood. Even with the kids grown and no debt. For a fraction of that, I just had my McCormack DNA 1 rebuilt by Steve McCormack including his new gravity base system. I am working on an article on that experience and to say I have been thrilled with it for an understatement. My pre amp is a perfect match for the new DNA 1 so there is no issue there. Would the latest Spectral amp sound better? Probably. But $20,000 better, not likely. So, that money is being invested in other things. I am a huge proponent of Spectral gear, but I am damn happy where I am now without the Spectral amp. Hope that answers your inquiry. shp, Nikhil and The Computer Audiophile 3 Link to comment
