Brian H
Has anyone else bought these? One is a Best of TBM Gold Disc from The Golden String Audiophile Society (In Japan?) I slid the OBI strip over so you can see the cover. The other is a Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio recorded direct to DSD and mixed in multi-channel. No one in my circle of collectors knows of the Best of TBM disc. Nikhil 1 Link to comment

Brian H
Let me know if you find one exceptional. Always looking for recommendations. I've been listening to the TBM 65 - Shoji Yokuouchi Blonde On The Rocks. I went ahead and ordered this book today: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/955214?sf=three+blind+mice&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&kwfilter=three+blind+mice&sort_order=artist Didn't realize I can translate Japanese with my phone. I'm sure I will start obsessing over these too just like my Blue Notes. soares 1 Link to comment

Brian H
That will keep you busy this weekend. Please let me know about that George Otsuka Physical Structure album. I really like the Go On and Page 2 (non-TBM) albums. I'm hoping that they will continue the series. The TBM book has color pictures of all the albums and there are some that look great based on the album covers. Link to comment

Although not strictly one or the other.. "Go On" is more straight ahead like a 60's Blue Note release. This one is more atmospheric like an ECM release. Also has more avantgarde moments like later period Coltrane... it includes "Naimi" from Giant Steps which is a Coltrane tune that they take up a notch. I'll stop short of "fantastic!" but I really like it, and goes without saying, great recording see my system at Audiogon https://systems.audiogon.com/systems/768 Link to comment

Brian H
Thanks for the recommendations to both of you. Good as bought. Dusty Groove has it on vinyl but is out of stock on cd. Not sure about the, "it includes "Naimi" from Giant Steps which is a Coltrane tune that they take up a notch" remark. Can that be done? Them's fighting words for a Coltrane fan like me, haha. Just kidding. Tall praise especially if you note the band around him. Link to comment

Can that be done? it depends on how you define "take it up a notch." On Giant Steps Coltrane plays it oh so slowly... much slower and he would have to stop. It is also melodic .. you can hum along if you can hum that slowly. Otsuka's version "takes it up" in the sense that it has some driving percussion behind it. The tempo of the melody isn't that much faster but they cram a whole lot more notes into the same space which gives it the sense that it is much faster. They take more liberties with the melody, more like Coltrane would take later on Live at the Village Vanguard Again On the Giant Steps version you can pick it up pretty much anywhere along the line and after a few notes you would know it was "Naimi". On the Otsuka version they wander away from the melody at some points so it is unrecognizable. On the Village Vanguard version there are long stretches where Coltrane completely abandons the melody and goes into Sun Ship territory. so I chose "take it up a notch" .. not better... different see my system at Audiogon https://systems.audiogon.com/systems/768 Link to comment
Brian H
I can't wait to hear it. Sounds like you know your Coltrane too. Naimi btw was his first wife's name. I would joke that the original version is romantic then later versions progress more and more off the rails (like my first wife) but that may not be pc. :-) Don't want to project that onto other people. I like the earlier stuff best but I can dig the later stuff. I started out collecting Blue Note 4000's, then 1500's, etc. Bought Midnight Sugar about 20 years ago and now I am on the TBM train. Haven't heard a bad one yet. Link to comment
Brian H
I also want to thank everyone who's into this label. For many years I felt like I was alone on an island buying these albums. Not even the record store owners around here (Dallas) seemed to know what I was talking about. The Computer Audiophile 1 Link to comment
firedog
Okay, request from someone who's intrigued but surely isn't going to buy a collection of 150 discs. Could a few of your post the 5-10 titles that would be your "must haves" from these? I can see myself trying to obtain 5-10 of them. Thanks. Popular Post Brian H
Here's my take: Midnight Sugar - more like drinking bourbon at 2am. Moon Ray - solid group work Coco's Blues - great jazz guitar Mari Nakamoto III - female vocal jazz. Georgia On My Mind with the slight Japanese accent is great. Kazumi Watanabe's guitar on I Only Have Eyes For You is insanely good. Summertime (or any other Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio album) - They are all great. Pick your favorite song title. Star Dust is my least favorite because I think the strings sweeten it too much The Computer Audiophile and bbosler 2 Link to comment
