Physical Structure is fantastic!

very different than "Go On" though. Although not strictly one or the other.. "Go On" is more straight ahead like a 60's Blue Note release. This one is more atmospheric like an ECM release. Also has more avantgarde moments like later period Coltrane... it includes  "Naimi" from Giant Steps which is a Coltrane tune that they take up a notch.

I'll stop short of "fantastic!" but I really like it, and goes without saying, great recording

"it includes  "Naimi" from Giant Steps which is a Coltrane tune that they take up a notch" remark.

Can that be done?

it depends on how you define "take it up a notch."

On Giant Steps Coltrane plays it oh so slowly... much slower and he would have to stop. It is also melodic .. you can hum along if you can hum that slowly.

Otsuka's version "takes it up" in the sense that it has some driving percussion behind it. The tempo of the melody isn't that much faster but they cram a whole lot more notes into the same space which gives it the sense that it is much faster. They take more liberties with the melody, more like Coltrane would take later on  Live at the Village Vanguard Again

On the Giant Steps version you can pick it up pretty much anywhere along the line and after a few notes you would know it was "Naimi". On the  Otsuka version they wander away from  the melody at some points so it is unrecognizable. On the Village Vanguard version there are long stretches where Coltrane completely abandons the melody and  goes into  Sun Ship territory.

so I chose "take it up a notch" .. not better... different

GOOD NEWS 😀

BAD NEWS ☹️

First, the good news....  the November titles that I ordered in September have shipped via DHL and will be here next week

The bad news...... I ordered the same November titles in October  that I forgot I ordered in September and they will also be here next week

If Chris will allow this post, I am asking if anybody wants to buy the extra set. I paid $90 with shipping so if I can get anywhere close I will be thrilled.

EDIT: SOLD - CC

Also available on vinyl

actually, that 3 disc set from Exclusive disc has been backordered for a long time.

I just saw and ordered the individual 45 rpm 2 disc sets that are now available again at Acoustic Sounds

Damn, this is getting expensive !!😮

in the same vein.. if unfamiliar check out Charles Lloyd, his 80th birthday concert is excellent.. if you like the Japanese stuff you will like this,,, try "Requiem" for a taste.. I bought the deluxe box set with 3 LPs that I'm listening to now.. eager to watch the DVD

I wonder if it is because they don't really understand what they are singing so the phrasing is odd to a native English speaker? That is a guess, they may all be fluent English speakers. I know it isn't unusual to hear a song you know well sung by somebody you haven't heard before and find it is a bit disconcerting. You get used to the way Ella did it and everybody else sounds wrong.

This was a surprise. I received this today. I don't think it was a TBM release but the "Second" album is one. Double 45 rpm vinyl or cd or download.

The vinyl is $40 which is actually a pretty good price for a double 45rpm release, too bad shipping is another $30.

here's a link to a sample, may have to go for it

but think about it a few times before you follow the link... they have other releases for sale

November releases are here. That gets me to right around 100 TBM releases if I count the LPs I have. Might be enough ?

naw, only a few more to go !!!

if you are keeping score at home here's what we have so far. In column B I  don't have those in yellow or green. I have those with CD or in blue. After TBM-78 it gets a little crazy with too many releases and re-releases for me to bother to keep up with. My notes such as LP only are based on a search but not an exhaustive search.

Ready to name your favorites yet?

They range from pop to fusion to bebop to avantgarde and everything in between so hard to pick favorites. Maybe a bit embarrassing but I would have trouble identifying most by listening as at one point they were coming in faster than I could get to them, and I have them all on a playlist on shuffle so don't always know what I'm listening to , but a few to recommend

  • George Otsuka "Go On" and "Physical Structure"
  • Sunao Wada "Coco's Blues"
  • Kosuke Mine "Mine"

discussed previously, but haven't warmed up to most of the vocal tracks.
