Following the simple instructions in the text and through the links I included doesn't require too much knowledge or spirit of adventure. And if you do them all, you end up with a $100 renderer / player with SQ and functionality that rivals a lot of equipment costing 15+ times as much. SBC audio is a godsend for audiophiles on a budget. It's also important to note that unless you overheat it (which is almost always from big time overclocking or otherwise overtaxing an uncooled board), the worst you can do is corrupt what's on the SD card and have to burn a fresh one and start over. So this is a great educational exercise for a novice who wants to learn about computer based audio and end up with a system he or she can enjoy. And it's a great way for an experienced audiophile to build a pretty fine second or third system for peanuts and tailor it to his or her exact wants and needs. Wait 'til the next pieces for some great projects, including a nice little multichannel playback system for about $500, a digital audio workstation you can use for live recording or ripping your CDs and vinyl, an active crossover, a free-standing Wifi hotspot, and a surprisingly fine NAS. And Chris's new CAPS project has inspired me to design a similar system with top tier hardware around a single board or other tiny heart. It's as easy as Pi! I look forward to your future projects. As for me, I break out in a cold sweat if I turn off a service in Windows. bluesman and The Computer Audiophile 1 1 Link to comment
