FreeDB / CDDB shutdown, alternatives, setting up your own mirror?

Recommended Posts

A couple of days ago, Freedb shut down:

Furthermore, the musicbrainz gateway using the CDDB protocol, has also shut down:

Ripping software using the CDDB protocol, no longer has any public internet services to retrieve the metadata from:

Probably there are still some working (private?) cddb URL's out these, do you know of any?

On some forum, I saw
freedb.dbpoweramp.com but that one is also no longer working, or maybe only with the user agent from dbpoweramp.

In the end I would just setup my own mirror, but the files to do so, are also gone:

The first link leads back to the company which aquired Freedb and shut it down on the 13th of June.

Does anyone know any still working CDDB mirrors?

Where do I find
the database file freedb-complete-20200601.tar.bz2 ?

The server side software can still be found:

https://osdn.net/projects/sfnet_freedb/downloads/cddbd_src/1.5.2/cddbd-1.5.2.tar.gz/

but it's probably very old and insecure.

Another solution is to switch to a ripper which uses the more modern MusicBrainz API.

We found a bug in a library after doing some packet traces and comparing the network traffic between foobar's freedb implementation and what an open source library was doing. It made a serious violation of current web standards.

Coming from a network engineering background, we fixed the library quickly and we will contact upstream channels to give the fix back to the open source community. It is already working in our lab.
